I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

@LookItsMeAgain I knew that for the same reason. The West Wing is HUGE favourite of mine.

@thisplaceisweird

I did enjoy *@thisplaceisweird* being WRONG though, at least the others were polite about it grin

Yes very funny - I am happy to be WRONG but I will wait until there's an article not from the sun or daily mail!

Sorry @thisplaceisweird you are WRONG as Radio 4's excellent More or Less show did this and they spoke to a senior meteorologist about it: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b0b3fz4c (it's the first item on the show).

Spoiler: if it says e.g. 1pm 14% it means there's a 14% chance of rain in your area in the hour LEADING UP TO 1pm. Not e.g. 14% of Glasgow will get rained on. Why they do it that way round - leading up to the hour - I can't imagine as it's the opposite of instinctive to understand that IMO.

That raisins are dried grapes.
Funny that, as I love grapes but hate raisins

There are some really stupid comments here but this wins
Why is that so stupid?

@CaveMum

Re Moose:

“ An adult moose is about 7-8 feet at the shoulders. When they look upright, they could be as tall as 10 feet if you factor in the head and the horns.”

Honestly, Google pictures of them it’s insane!

I've googled...OH MY DAYS!!!
godmum56 · 14/03/2022 12:49

and apperently carried it on....but it doesn't look as though Trump did.

Yes. You have to point within about an inch of the bumblebee and it will raise a leg to point back. I've seen them do it at each other too.[/quote]
What do they think you're saying/doing to them? Are you saying something immensely rude about their mother and they're saying 'Right back at ya'? or do they think you're greeting them? or something else?

Something you've learnt today 😂😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/03/2022 12:50

I think the last job the channel tunnel borers did was to dig a grave for themselves. The machines became obsolete as soon as they'd finished and they weren't worth removing and scrapping.

I thought you meant the human workers at first - seemed a bit extreme!

Another one here who can only ever hear 'Cross Incontinents'!

A lot of people don't realise that, because of the actual tilt of Great Britain (contrary to what most maps show), Edinburgh and Cardiff are on the same line of longitude. If you asked most people which two UK capitals shared the same line, they'd assume Edinburgh and London.

Regarding the maps being centred on the country/area where they're being sold, does that mean that some small Pacific islands have mostly water on theirs, with lots of land all bunched up at the sides - or do they only go to the trouble of producing different-perspective world maps for major population centres?! I always assumed that most countries have the same map that we do in the UK, because it kind of makes sense to focus on the land/countries and not the Pacific Ocean.

Why is that so stupid?

Because some posters are so superior and smart and are using this thread to inflate that sense of self worth

@hopeful777

I worked in Portsmouth for a year and I did not know that!

These are absolute class! Really brightening up my lonely Sunday evening 😊

@hopeful777 if it makes you feel better, I was born on Portsmouth and lived near it for 18 years, including many visits and I found out about 2 years ago when watching only connect
SVRT19674 · 14/03/2022 12:54

@BigRedDuck I also wondered for years and years what a tromboleze was! It was only while listening to the song again last week on the car radio that I realised what the actual words were!!!!

Is the Met Office official enough for you?

@ifIwerenotanandroid

re: Gutermann thread. I've just taken one apart , but it can't hold needles because I used it on the machine & that's punctured the paper on both ends. How is this supposed to work?

Gutermann Sew-All 100m reel

I'd never noticed the two ends are different.

The plastic end unscrews. I use them to store discarded needles for safe disposal.
TarcasticSwat · 14/03/2022 13:03

Actually @Siepie it's a combination of both probability and area.

TarcasticSwat · 14/03/2022 13:04

@NotYourOscarSpeech we are both correct (I think)...it's a calculation based on probability and area.

Wait!!!….
There’s TWO Channel tunnels??

Oh, I thought the trains passed each other and you could wave to the other train….
Really thought that PP meant the tunnel workers dug their own graves… 😱. Til I read on and saw she meant for the machinery!! Feel sad about the machinery now…😳

RandomBasic · 14/03/2022 13:07

@MattDillonsEyebrows

I have only just learnt that the spinny sprayers in your dishwasher come out and you should clean them.

I have been cursing my dishwashers for years, as it was rubbish and things would come out dirtier than they went in. I cleaned it with a dishwasher cleaner every month, when I topped up the salt and rinse aid but that only seemed to last a week or so, before having to rewash loads of things.

My mil told me about the sprayers. Took them out, and yep, they were gross and many of the holes were blocked. Cleaned and put back in, it's like a different dishwasher! Everything is sparkling when it comes out.

Absolute game changer!

Asking for a friend, what are those? Do they have an official name so that my friend can watch a YouTube instruction video?
PineappleWilson · 14/03/2022 13:11

@Mumdiva99 the X shaped oxo cube is a relatively recent thing. They used to be cubes. It's the company's way of keeping the cost the same whilst giving you less product, like chocolate manufacturers do. 4 small chunks cut out of each one whilst retaining the general cube shape.

That's american though - the met office explained in the article higher up that they don't calculate it that way (but acknowledged that it sometimes was in the US), and the %age they give is purely the probablity of rain, not based on the %age of area covered at all.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 14/03/2022 13:12

@pawpaws2022

That even when you've been stabbing avocado stones for years, a knife will still slip, go through your hand and be stopped by a bone Also hitting the bone really bloody hurts
Have you tried this pawpaws?

@ResurrectionInfinity

I still think he was popping out for a shopping trip because his little brother went ‘Weeh! Weeh! Weeh all the way home’ They were therefore able to go out and about and come home again so nobody need worry. Smile
Clearly he was going to the market to buy the roast beef...
Alyssasbackrolls · 14/03/2022 13:20

The units on your gas meter are not the kW you are charged for on your bill. They are cubic meters or feet and you have to dick around doing sums to convert them. Note: and they end up being a MUCH MUCH bigger number. Basically that you can not just work out the increase in your gas bill by comparing old and new readings and timesing by your unit cost + standing charge like you can with the leccy.

HadEnoughOfBears · 14/03/2022 13:25

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave

Also related, when someone goes to shake your hand and you reflexively oblige

I learned this approximately two seconds after I'd slammed a car door on my hand. I had to go to hospital for X-rays.

I learned recently that the really hardworking woman in my office is actually twins.

Twins! I've giggled so much at this! And you thought she was some kind of Miss Rabbit!

@BigRedDuck

That a tromboleze is not a word, nor, a tiny trombone. And the song goes "My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs" Grin

Courtesy of the misheard lyrics thread the other day!!!!!

We only ever sing ‘tromboleze’ in this house (shout it gleefully in fact), in homage to a colleague of me and DH who genuinely thought the same as you and has never lived it down to this day 😂
