I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

@AdaColeman

But why would there be fish, even tiny ones, in a vegan recipe?
yes what on earth is that poster on about? they're round and squishy and have petals, nothing like tiny fish
NotYourOscarSpeech · 14/03/2022 12:01

Oh actually @ChessieFL and @Siepie have vindicated me!! So now I am back to only being singularly and not doubly stupid.

I did enjoy @thisplaceisweird being WRONG though, at least the others were polite about it Grin

IcakethereforeIam · 14/03/2022 12:02

I think the last job the channel tunnel borers did was to dig a grave for themselves. The machines became obsolete as soon as they'd finished and they weren't worth removing and scrapping. I think this happens in most projects where machines like this are used. It makes me sad, like Henry bricked up in a tunnel, but forever.

On a brighter note, Austrailian Mistletoe birds have evolved a special walk to wipe sticky mistletoe seeds off their bums.

godmum56 · 14/03/2022 12:05

Does everyone know that bombay duck is actually a fish?

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2022 12:06

@dementedpixie

Wooden items never fare that well in the dishwasher tbh
Yes, but they can also break from being soaked in the sink/washing up bowl, can't be left in water too long basically.
ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 14/03/2022 12:07

@Ddot

I rather like the idea of the channel tunnel being like a huge sea life experience
It can be! There's a Eurostar app where you can watch the sea/fish as you travel through it. Or at least there was in 2017/18 when I last took a Eurostar.

@AnchorWHAT

1. That split peas cooked in a pressure cooker take a lot less time than i thought to cook
 1. That overfilling a pressure cooker can cause it to malfunction
 2. That wearing split peas is not a great look
 3. That cleaning split peas off the ceiling -and every other bastard surface in a kitchen- is bloody hard work
For numbers 4 and 5 I can say with some authority the same is very likely to happen if you leave a tin of condensed milk boiling away in an uncovered saucepan. (The ceiling stains never come off, BTW)
Ruinedwalks · 14/03/2022 12:08

I also thought capers were fish. Not the actual caper, but I thought the word meant some time of anchovy thing. I don’t eat fish, so I think it was probably from Pizza Hut menus when as fish (anchovies) always appeared on the pizzas which listed capers.

Fairislefandango · 14/03/2022 12:09

But, to be honest, I don't actually believe it. I eat capers about twice a week, as part of a couple of vegan recipes. I still firmly hold that they are tiny fishies. The rest of the world has it wrong.

Confused Have you been eating them with your eyes shut? They are tiny little round balls - they look nothing like a fish whatsoever, even a tiny one!

Deadringer · 14/03/2022 12:09

@Margaretmatcher

That the main actor in mrs browns boys is a.man.

@AdaColeman

That was my point - I'm so deeply convinced they're fish that even their appearance in vegan recipes can't convince me otherwise.

Maybe fish is the wrong term. But I definitely think they're alive little sea creatures that bumble around reefs, half way between seaweed and proper fishies.

But basically fishies, not plants

Learnt only last week, that if you place your block of cheese on a plate and grate the top, you can get grated cheese with no additional human DNA. Blush

These days I always wear washing up gloves whilst grating anything. Learned that lesson the hard way.
Margaretmatcher · 14/03/2022 12:17

DEADRINGER yes honestly of course I can see it now. Yes I know I am stupidSmile

SleepingStandingUp · 14/03/2022 12:19
but with the channel tunnel one, there were TV articles about it being built and the huge screw thing that was drilling through the earth....or am I just old and no one else saw it on TV? As I recall they had two, one drilling from each end?
yup...and there are actually 2 tunnels, not one. www.thoughtco.com/the-channel-tunnel-1779429
It was built in1988. You know that for lots of people it's been there their entire lives. I was 6, didn't pay that attention.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/03/2022 12:21

Sorry, started not finished

godmum56 · 14/03/2022 12:22

@SleepingStandingUp

oh god its official I am oooooooooold.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/03/2022 12:25

I remember being angry that they were going to build a tunnel, can't remember why. My God, feel old now.

HRTQueen · 14/03/2022 12:25

Crocodiles can climb trees and fences. They have just kept this secret for years

fauna means animals Shock I thought it meant bushes and weeds

Why is the little piggy carry a little shopping basket covered with a red and white gingham tea cloth if he shopping. Could he be delivering dredging baked bread to friends ?

Things I’ve just learnt
HRTQueen · 14/03/2022 12:27

Freshly baked bread

What is wrong with my auto correct Confused

thisplaceisweird · 14/03/2022 12:30

Yes very funny - I am happy to be WRONG but I will wait until there's an article not from the sun or daily mail!

MattDillonsEyebrows · 14/03/2022 12:33

I have only just learnt that the spinny sprayers in your dishwasher come out and you should clean them.

I have been cursing my dishwashers for years, as it was rubbish and things would come out dirtier than they went in. I cleaned it with a dishwasher cleaner every month, when I topped up the salt and rinse aid but that only seemed to last a week or so, before having to rewash loads of things.

My mil told me about the sprayers. Took them out, and yep, they were gross and many of the holes were blocked. Cleaned and put back in, it's like a different dishwasher! Everything is sparkling when it comes out.

Absolute game changer!

margegunderson · 14/03/2022 12:35

@SpiderinaWingMirror

That the Radio 4 programme "Crossing Continents" really isn't "Cross incontinents". Cos the latter is all I hear!
Oh God me too. So glad I am not the only one.

I think we may be living parallel lives. I made a stove top stew yesterday and threw in a handful of split peas and I too had a split pea disaster.
LookItsMeAgain · 14/03/2022 12:38

@BiscuitLover3678

Something else I learned a few years ago is how big Africa is. It always seems smaller due to the distortions on the popular Mercator map. It’s massive.
I realise that what I type next relates to a fictional US President and a US drama series but..... You would have learned that years ago if you were a West Wing fan on Big Block of Cheese Day when CJ had to go in to a presentation from the Organisation of Cartographers for Social Equality. They wanted to get US schools to stop using the Mercator projection and start using the Peters Projection.
