I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

I thought capers were a kind of fish too, until about 10 years ago. They're just....well, they get put with fish and they are salty like anchovies. i just didn't think it through, really. Grin

I learned yesterday that hand sanitiser is excellent for removing stains and glue from walls. It also removes the paint as well as door varnish.

Riseholme · 14/03/2022 11:05

@SpiderinaWingMirror

That the Radio 4 programme "Crossing Continents" really isn't "Cross incontinents". Cos the latter is all I hear!
Me too. Always makes me laugh.
Riseholme · 14/03/2022 11:07

I also zoned out in church once and thought the vicar said savoury tortoise.
He actually said in the words our saviour taught us.
@SleepingStandingUp, I struggle to believe some of the repeat entries on these threads, too, to be honest.

I mean, some of the fruits/nuts stuff is fair enough, or the relative sizes of countries usually distorted by conventional globes, or misheard lyrics, but I don't get that some significant percentage of adults thought the Channel Tunnel was like a sort-of aquarium tunnel where you could wave at fish from the train? Or who confuse capers with a type of fish, which just seems odd?
Capers and anchovies. Easily mixed up of you don't cook using them or eat them.

Channel tunnel, I think the idea of digging under the sea to such an extent seems ridiculous. Its a lack of thinking it through (ie the pressure on the glass) rather than people being thick and stupid as they're being on herr

bewhoyouaresaywhatyoufeel · 14/03/2022 11:11

On a theme similar , the little pigs - I was driving along the Motorway aged definitely more than 40 when I realised that the big truck full of sheep wasn't taking them from one farm to another like my mum had always told me!

Still I look and think oh really?

godmum56 · 14/03/2022 11:13

but with the channel tunnel one, there were TV articles about it being built and the huge screw thing that was drilling through the earth....or am I just old and no one else saw it on TV? As I recall they had two, one drilling from each end?
yup...and there are actually 2 tunnels, not one. www.thoughtco.com/the-channel-tunnel-1779429

My husband was astonished years ago that chips could be made at home; his mother had told her three strapping, ever-hungry boys that chips had to be made in a chip shop.

Never Have wooden worktops near sinks and water — they mark like hell and are ruined very easily

That on the weather app, where it has percentages, that’s the chance of rain and not how rainy it’s going to be (ie 100% rainy is very strong torrential rain, 10% rainy is just a bit of a drizzle).

WRONG it's the coverage in an area (usually the area highlighted on the map as they talk about it) - e.g. 40% of that area will get rain

Despite several people on this thread saying that it’s the percentage of that area that will get rain, it looks like the original poster is correct (that is the percentage chance of rain): metro.co.uk/2021/07/28/weather-what-does-the-rain-percentage-mean-on-forecasts-and-the-iphone-app-14996926/amp/
cherryonthecakes · 14/03/2022 11:25

I always found the piggy eating roast beef the most puzzling part of that rhyme. I've watched enough gangster films to know that pigs eat anything and everything but is the piggy eating roast beef the one who is being sent to market next time ?

LookItsMeAgain · 14/03/2022 11:27

@ememem84

That a dishwasher doesn’t actually fill up with water.
You really thought that with the door closed, the cavity inside (where you stack your dishes and cutlery) completely filled up with water??? Did you never wonder how the rotary arms with the little holes, where the water comes out would move through the water in the machine? I'm baffled at that. Have you never googled how does a dishwasher work or searched it on YouTube??

Capers and anchovies. Easily mixed up of you don't cook using them or eat them.

But how would you know whether you use them to cook if you haven't tasted them?

Justanotherobserver · 14/03/2022 11:31

@FantasticFebruary

Yes. You have to point within about an inch of the bumblebee and it will raise a leg to point back. I've seen them do it at each other too.

Snuggleworm · 14/03/2022 11:32

@doodlejump1980

I was 35 when I found out that capers are not tiny fish. 35.
WHAT??????I am 49 and I still think they are tiny fish. What are they?
KStockHERO · 14/03/2022 11:36

@doodlejump1980

I was 35 when I found out that capers are not tiny fish. 35.
I learnt this in my early 30s too.

But, to be honest, I don't actually believe it. I eat capers about twice a week, as part of a couple of vegan recipes. I still firmly hold that they are tiny fishies. The rest of the world has it wrong.

Ddot · 14/03/2022 11:45

I rather like the idea of the channel tunnel being like a huge sea life experience

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/03/2022 11:46

I learned recently that the really hardworking woman in my office is actually twins. Grin Grin

Another one baffled by how anybody could confuse capers with anchovies. Capers don't taste fishy, they have a pronounced vinegary taste from being pickled, and they are green! Why wouldn't you associate them with olives rather than anchovies?

AdaColeman · 14/03/2022 11:46

But why would there be fish, even tiny ones, in a vegan recipe?

PleaseBeSeated · 14/03/2022 11:47

@godmum56

I haven't just learned this but did you know that Guterman thread reels open up at one end to store needles?
Ooh just checked some of my thread! I'm not sure how it would hold needles, but looking it up you can twist out the middle bit then use it to tuck the loose end of your thread away so it doesn't unravel. That's so useful!
NotYourOscarSpeech · 14/03/2022 11:57

@TarcasticSwat @LeftieLucy Well now I feel doubly stupid Grin
