I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

@Soubriquet

Another thing about the moose….it’s main predator is the orca
@Soubriquet - Mind. Blown.

@SleepingStandingUp, I struggle to believe some of the repeat entries on these threads, too, to be honest.

I mean, some of the fruits/nuts stuff is fair enough, or the relative sizes of countries usually distorted by conventional globes, or misheard lyrics, but I don't get that some significant percentage of adults thought the Channel Tunnel was like a sort-of aquarium tunnel where you could wave at fish from the train? Or who confuse capers with a type of fish, which just seems odd?

A lot of people will remember the 1988 Lockerbie crash of the Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, via London and via New York City.

If you look up Lockerbie you might be surprised where the route Heathrow to New York goes. I knew people at the time who were sure the flight would go via Devon/Cornwall to get there.

It's interesting, at least find it so, to look at the sites like flight tracker and see how the transatlantic route changes with the weather, sometimes they fly much further North than others.

That Edinburgh is farther west than Bristol.

No it isn't.....

That the Radio 4 programme "Crossing Continents" really isn't "Cross incontinents". Cos the latter is all I hear!

Ruinedwalks · 14/03/2022 10:13

Mumfova - your map isn’t at the right angle though. The U.K. is tilted compared to that

Mumdiva99 · 14/03/2022 10:13
That you should break up an OXO cube still in the foil (doesn't work with the bustard chicken ones for me though)

www.smoothradio.com/news/quirky/how-to-unwrap-oxo-cubes-hack/
And that if you open an oxo cube without doing this.....it's not actually a square shape but an X. (Never knew because I always crumble in the packet).

dottydodah · 14/03/2022 10:15

Until recently always thought that Capers were small fish! Apparently not .Small berries of a bush grown in the med. Must be confusing them with Anchovies !

ResurrectionInfinity · 14/03/2022 10:16

@Mumdiva99

See Edinburgh and Bristol
You need a map with longitude lines.
JudgeJ · 14/03/2022 10:17

@Mumdiva99

See Edinburgh and Bristol
That's because we tend to look at the UK map as you have it, (I always thought it looked like a bus driver!) However it should tilt left, the M62 for instance runs more ENE than E, and Edinburgh is definitely West of Bristol
Mumdiva99 · 14/03/2022 10:18

Well blow me down. I bow to your knowledge.
FantasticFebruary · 14/03/2022 10:19

@Justanotherobserver

If you get up close to a bumblebee and point at it, it will point back.
really??

Certainly get plenty here in the summer to give that a go!!

BoredZelda · 14/03/2022 10:20

Squint - meaning askew, not straight, crooked, (eg, that picture is squint) is a Scottish word.

And before the pile on of English people who have used/heard it etc, this is 100% true, look it up.

ResurrectionInfinity · 14/03/2022 10:21

Also there is a repeated theme of one piggy getting a treat and the next one going without. That is Going to market versus staying at home. Having roast beef versus not having roast beef.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/03/2022 10:23

@Soubriquet

Another thing about the moose….it’s main predator is the orca
Eh?
Soubriquet · 14/03/2022 10:24

Moose will dive down in the water to reach rich green grass.

Orcas will be in the water waiting for a chance to have a nice moose meal

TatianaBis · 14/03/2022 10:36

That Stoke on Trent is roughly in a line from London - Birmingham - Manchester, I could have sworn it was east of Nottingham. In fact there's nothing east of Nottingham but Lincolnshire and the sea.

SexiestDogWalker · 14/03/2022 10:48

If you heat up soup in the microwaveable pot you bought it in, the one that literally says to loosely replace the lid and microwave for three minutes, sometimes that plastic will become so pliable that if you go to grab it from the plate rather that removing it balanced on the plate, it will squish inwards like it's made of plasticine, sending chicken and vegetable fucking LAVA down your hand and putting you in hospital with 2C burns.

Also related, when someone goes to shake your hand and you reflexively oblige even though you've got dressings for burns on your hand, the handshake will whisk the skin off your hand like it was from a well cooked roast chicken.

CremeEggThief · 14/03/2022 10:51

Wow about the orca and the moose! That's amazing!Shock

I'm wincing in sympathy with you! Ouch - I hope your hand has healed ok now?

Capers aren’t the “small berries” of the caper plant, they are the pickled flower buds of the plant, which is obvious is you have a look at some.

Caper berries ARE the berries of the caper plant! They are pickled, usually with their stems included. Eat them like olives, with a glass of dry sherry, or use to garnish a Negroni cocktail. 🍸 🍸 🍸

ResurrectionInfinity · 14/03/2022 10:54

And another thing:
Was our hero taken to market? Was he sent?
No. He went of his own accord.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 14/03/2022 10:57

Also related, when someone goes to shake your hand and you reflexively oblige

I learned this approximately two seconds after I'd slammed a car door on my hand. I had to go to hospital for X-rays.

I learned recently that the really hardworking woman in my office is actually twins.
