What do you class as an ideal inside temperature?

After the hideous price of heating oil we’ve completely cut down on the use of the heating.

I’m quite a cold person and am used to having it really warm so have lost all perception of reality!

What temperature do you class as comfortable in a room? At what point would you consider putting the heating on?

Currently sat in the 19 degrees living room and I’m cold!

20⁰ between 6-7.30am and 5.30-9.30pm. Off at all other times during the working week. In weekends and holidays I press a boost button for an hour at 20⁰.

18-19 but not for long i cant stand it too hot. The heating is almost always off 8pm until we get up around 7.30-8am. It drops to 12/13 degrees overnight but we all sleep fine. I do take a hot water bottle to bed though

mrsfollowill · 10/03/2022 22:09

We don't have it on timer and just use the thermostat- 1st one up in the morning turns it to 19 when they get up. It goes on and off on it's own for the rest of the day - I work from home full time now but when I went to the office I switched it off 30 mins before I left. Normally gets turned off 9.30 pm and is off overnight. Would kick in overnight if it dropped to 10 degrees but that does not happen. Cannot stand heating on at night ever- I have terrible nightmares if I'm too hot at night and normally have the bedroom window open April- Oct.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 10/03/2022 22:11

16/17.... but then again I’m pretty warm blooded so anything over 21 outside is far to hot for me...

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/03/2022 22:13

19-21 during the evening when we are cold. No heating over night.if I am at home during the day I wouldn't want it to drop below 17.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/03/2022 22:13

28-30 , being cold is miserable.

Not everyone has a thermostat. Until this winter we didn’t have one and our central heating got switched on ( on a timer, one hour in the morning, one hour in the evening) in about November and off for the summer in about April. Seemed to work for our small modern mid terrace.
This winter we were talked into having a thermostat fitted when we had the boiler serviced. We have sort of settled into a similar pattern, the house warms up in the morning when the thermostat is on about 19/20 then I turn it down and house seems to stay warm at around 19/20. Probably because we are south facing with lots of glass that side of the house.
Turn it down to 15 overnight as I can’t stand heat overnight and it never clicks on so presumably our house holds heat really well.
Getting a bit warmer down south so will probably start turning it down to 17/18 over the next couple of weeks.
For those of you with similar basic controls do you actually switch your heating off for the summer or leave it switched on with a lower temp on the thermostat? Any idea which of those options is more economical? Thanks in advance

@Butteredtoast55 Please can I ask what you went for? I’m looking at Tado at the moment.

Thewindwhispers · 10/03/2022 22:34

I like 18-19 but DH prefers 20-22 🤦‍♀️

ToniLaRoni · 10/03/2022 22:59

18 in the day. 15 at night.

It's in our lounge which is the warmest room other than our kitchen.

Bedrooms are considerably cooler so sometimes we will crack it up higher before DC bedtime if their rooms are particularly cold.

springtimeishereagain · 10/03/2022 23:15

18-19

dipdye · 10/03/2022 23:17

19 degrees is perfect.

MidnightMeltdown · 10/03/2022 23:26

19 - 20

nannybeach · 11/03/2022 09:48

Knittingnanny2, turn off the central heating in the summer
Are these old systems without thermostats,or do they have one on the boiler/tank/hot water and just not a room one. On at night for the dogs! Presumably they are Chinese Crested Hairless, then, being as all my dogs, including a toy of 16 I have now,go out walking in all weathers.

Knittingnanny2 · 11/03/2022 11:34

@nannybeach thank you, will do.

FindingMeno · 11/03/2022 13:14

28-30 would trigger instant migraines for us Shock

sparklyponies · 11/03/2022 14:06

I work at home and I'm active in the mornings so 17, then sitting mid-late afternoon so 19, then 21 for the evening if we're all home and back down to 17 overnight.

Billandben444 · 11/03/2022 14:42

I'm 70 this year and feel the cold more than I used to. In an ideal world (cheap gas), it would be 20 during the day and 21 when it gets dark and cools down. It then went off mid evening as we like to sleep with window open. Nowadays though, I only put it on for an hr in the evening before we sit down (21) and the rest of the time I put a thick velour dressing gown on. Never thought my retirement would be like this.

Jonny1265 · 11/03/2022 14:47

@AlmostMaybe

I’ve never used heating overnight, I didn’t realise anyone did!

We do it mainly for the dogs, they sleep better with it on. And we like to be warm too.

Dogs can thermoregulate in very low temperatures.
LBOCS2 · 11/03/2022 14:55

17.5 - not too warm while you're moving around and fine as long as you've got a blanket if you're sat down for long periods. Our heating is completely off overnight.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 11/03/2022 17:38

I'm happiest at 20, but also on oil so currently 17 during the day, 18 in the evening and off overnight. I feel, just slightly cold, all of the time, but I'm so worried about fuel costs!

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 11/03/2022 18:00

It sort of depends for me. I’ve had it on at 18/19 when it’s been cold but now it seems fairly warm to me so I’ve not had the heating on properly for a while.

House is very well insulated so it’s been warm enough for me to just wear a t shirt today.
