What do you class as an ideal inside temperature?

After the hideous price of heating oil we’ve completely cut down on the use of the heating.

I’m quite a cold person and am used to having it really warm so have lost all perception of reality!

What temperature do you class as comfortable in a room? At what point would you consider putting the heating on?

Currently sat in the 19 degrees living room and I’m cold!

19.5 and off altogether at night

Concestor · 10/03/2022 17:16

21c in the day, it goes off at bedtime so no idea what the temperature is overnight. I hate being cold. I avoid visiting some friends because their houses are so cold it's uncomfortable.

Ecosralayce · 10/03/2022 17:17

I am a cold person! Used to have it at 21 during evening/day if in and off overnight. Have now reduced it to 18, will probably need to reduce further tbh. Im sat here in many layers, under a blanket really cold!!

Enough4me · 10/03/2022 17:18

Off at night 16-19 in day.

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 10/03/2022 17:18

19 night and day heating set to come on it it drops below

nannybeach · 10/03/2022 17:25

How can you have a central heating system without a thermostat? 18c in the day here,I put it off an hour before bed,if its still on then. Had years of menopause hot flushes, then got out onto hypertension meds which cause hot flushes,so 15 at night,I'll be out of the duvet. Before I met my second DH, I had the window open at night

LaurieFairyCake · 10/03/2022 17:26

I don't have a thermostat - it's either on or off. (The thermostat broke)

I have a separate thermometer that tells me how warm it is inside

nannybeach · 10/03/2022 17:28

Went to a friend the other day,her heating on 23.5,she's got some fancy pants digital thing, huge numbers. South facing room sun blasting in,she's wearing a t shirt,I'm wearing a fairly light jumper, thought I would pass out.

northbacchus · 10/03/2022 18:50

16-17, I find other people's houses unbearably hot! I'm happy to shove a dressing gown over clothes or an extra thick jumper if I'm sitting around.

TracyMosby · 10/03/2022 18:52

In my classroom, below 17 is far too cold. 17 is comfortable minimum. Hit 21 and the students are hot and falling asleep.

Troublesometooth · 10/03/2022 19:00

I’ve never used heating overnight, I didn’t realise anyone did!

Ours is always set to come on around 5:30am to warm through before we get up. Then it’s usually on until 10pm when we go to bed. But will be clicking itself on and off during that time because of the thermostat.

I’ve now changed it to be on 6-7am and 3:30-4:30 and that’s all. I’ve bought a room thermometer and will keep an eye on the room temperatures. If it drops below 17 I will put the heating on again for a bit.

We do it mainly for the dogs, they sleep better with it on. And we like to be warm too.

BestZebbie · 10/03/2022 19:08

If I’m sitting still in a room for a long period I dress warmly (often with a blanket too) but want my immediate vicinity to be heated up about 23C. I’d achieve that with a fan heater right next to me that I turn on and off throughout the day rather than trying to heat the whole house to 23 though.

shinynewapple22 · 10/03/2022 19:23

Around 19 in the day time, 20 when sitting in front of the TV in the evening. I never heat the house at night - may have done for a few very cold nights when DS was a baby but other than that I cannot sleep in a warm room .

Smokeahontas · 10/03/2022 20:12

16 for 30 mins in the morning, 19 for two hours in the evening. Thermostat is set to 13 for the other 22.5 hours of the day. I WFH - thick socks, fleecy hoodie & hot water bottles during the day.

Could probably cut the morning out completely & most likely will when prices go up.

Smokeahontas · 10/03/2022 20:12

21.5 hours of the day, rather!

HeadacheGrey · 10/03/2022 20:31

15 during the day and off at night. I can’t stand being too hot.

catfunk · 10/03/2022 20:36

Around 19 during the day if at home, 21 for an hour before bed then off overnight 10-6. I plug in a little oil radiator in the bedroom if it's freezing overnight rather than heat a whole empty house

Between 18-20, higher if it is a damp day.

I sit down mainly during the day so get cold quite fast and don’t like wrapping up in lots of layers, that’s uncomfortable for me.

But we have the thermostat controlled so it shuts down when the room temperature has reached 20 degrees and goes out at 9pm and it goes back on at 5am unless the temperature goes below 10 degrees.

I've never done it intentionally, I hate heat at the best of times, but there was some sort of issue with the timer that meant it came on around 3-4am over winter for a while.

It was amazing how I didn't wake up in pain (psoriatic arthritis) and could move almost freely just by it being kept to 16.5 overnight.

LynetteScavo · 10/03/2022 21:54

20'C

If it's 18'C and I'm watching TV I'll grab a blanket.

Our heating kicks in if it drops below 18'C.

We lived with no central heating for 2 years (and I grew up with no heating upstairs) so I know I can survive with less heating. I really don't like chilblains though.

Leftleg · 10/03/2022 22:00

Probably about 21, but I've turned it down to 19 and just sit with a blanket/hoodie on.

Butteredtoast55 · 10/03/2022 22:02

20 is plenty for me. 19 can feel a bit cool if I'm sitting still but when I'm busy in the daytime I'm happy with that. It goes off at night.
We have recently had separately controlled valves on all the radiators so just heat the rooms we need when we need them. It's really cutting our bills.

CatherinedeBourgh · 10/03/2022 22:04

18 degrees in living areas, 15 in bedrooms. Bedrooms are fine up to 12-13 degrees, less gets cold imo. Anything over 16 I get sweaty at night.
