Honestly we would be better had it not been for putin (and having to pay top prices for our own oil supply is a fucking stupid thing) but putin is my main concern until winter comes and we die of cold

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 09/03/2022 13:43

And it was grey all the time, like this. The emergency vehicles went "nee naw nee naw nee naw" and you only got a chocolate bar at Xmas.

My grandparents had a purple bathroom suite and a doll toilet roll cover

GlacindaTheTroll · 09/03/2022 13:46

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 09/03/2022 13:47

@Theunamedcat Burgundy would have been my second choice until @DoingAway came up with a Purple option. 😻
I might still somewhere have a knitting or crochet pattern for that fugly doll Grin

RancidOldHag · 09/03/2022 13:48

It's going to be like the 1970s, but forever. Cold, dark, miserable, grim, crap food, power cuts and constant anxiety over The Bomb

I still get nostalgic about the smell of burning paraffin, as I did my homework by oil lamp

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 09/03/2022 13:49

The only heating you had was one of these in the lounge. No central heating in the rest of the house. An electric heater thing in the bathroom and an immersion heater to heat hot water.

You only got a bath once a week because it took two days for the immersion heater to heat enough hot water (I might be lying about that though).

There was no double glazing either 🥶🥶🥶

I feel like I'm witnessing a new age. At the beginiing of 2018 I was happily married coming up to 20th wedding anniversary and living in the house of my dreams in a beautiful national park and felt I'd really made it with lovely friends, a great job and a great life.
Roll on 2022 and my husband suddenly freaked out and left, I lost my home, lost my job, my friends died one by one, stroke, cancer, accidents, one of my cats died, I got two more jobs that i was sacked from because I had a serious mental health problem similar to schizophrenia which i wasn't aware I had then that was diagnosed, I had to move 300 miles cross country to start a new job (now on proper medication), then covid struck, 2 more friends died, my remaining cat died, and now world war bloody three.
I'm sitting here in March 2022 thinking what the actual fuck just happened?

I remember.

It's why we're so weak these days. We've been spoilt rotten with all that heating everywhere and hot water.

DGRossetti · 09/03/2022 13:56

Precession of the equinoxes.

DM (and so me) used to watch "Aquarius" in the 1970s ..

Clarabe1 · 09/03/2022 13:56

My nana had a sunset orange bathroom suite and a doll cover on the loo roll. She said it was a ‘treat’ to spend a penny in there. Yes - grim times indeed.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 09/03/2022 13:57

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation Now that thing should come with a warning! Don't forget - we didn't have duvets either...just itchy blankets and a candlewick bedspread Grin until the introduction of the "Continental Quilt"

Amazing freedoms as a child. Fewer cars; more dogs running loose; burning hot summers, cold snowy winters; seasonal food, mostly grown in UK/Europe, homemade - crinkle cut chips and the lethal chip pan; power cuts, candles; hand me down clothes, knowing how to sew/repair them; pockey money that bought a comic and handful of penny chews; friends, playing out, riding bikes, being out of sight; three day weeks, brown outs, and the Nuclear Clock.

Bellalastrasse · 09/03/2022 13:59

That’s a hell of a lot @Shehasadiamondinthesky

How are you now?

Overthebow · 09/03/2022 13:59

@HairyToity

Today, I turned my heating off (except for 1.5 hours in the morning), and I thought - is this a new way of life. Minimal heating from now on.... Is a 110 mile round journey to enjoy a day on the beach, ever going to happen again. Will we use less fossil fuels and gas out of necessity. Are we all going to be much poorer from now on.
Definitely dramatic. I’ve always turned my heating off during the day, unless it’s really freezing outside. I’m already planning trips to the beach and other long car journeys so yes they’re still happening and will continue to happen!
EmmaH2022 · 09/03/2022 14:01

Shehasadiamondinthesky those sorts of things are indeed the real dividing lines in our lives. I'm sorry you have been through all this. Flowers

Same enquiry because that is an astonishing series of events to have befallen you in that timescale, Shehasadiamondinthesky Flowers

Hi Yes I'm ok now if a bit shellshocked. My mental health is fine on the appropriate medication, I've got a great new job I love and my son and I bought a house together with DiL bigger than the last house and I live in a lovely rural area and we survived covid but it was a bit touch and go for a time. Thanks for asking xx
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 09/03/2022 14:02

Didn't Corona used to be pop not a pandemic?

@RancidOldHag we had a paraffin lamp in the outside loo to stop it freezing in winter. It wasn't a particularly pleasurable experience...

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 09/03/2022 14:05

BBC did a few tv series of "Back in time for..." which might be interesting for those that don't remember pre-decimal coins, chopper bikes or ladybirds.

RealBecca · 09/03/2022 14:05

No. People will carry on doing what they've always done.

There have been problems for every generation.

Internet just hyped anxiety, 30 years ago people would get a small line in the papers about climate and a spread on the current affairs (Ukraine/Russia) d people would have chatted about it with friends and colleagues and that would have been it.

Now you open your phone and theres news in your face...social media posts about it, fundraisers being shared by everyone you've ever met. It all feels more intense. If it was just in the papers people wouldn't give any of it as much thought.

Plus if you're worried about big issues then you subscribe to updates from those social media voices or your phone algorithm shows more.

I was about to say that at least he will be warm in that poncho Grin, then I spotted the carpet in that lovely avocado bathroom Shock. I'd forgotten about carpet in bathrooms.
SamphiretheStickerist · 09/03/2022 14:06

Yes. And Pepsi used to be lipsmacking, thirst quenching, ace tasting, motivating, good buzzing, cool talking, high walking, fast living, ever giving, cool fizzing...Pepsi!

Yup!!

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_(soft_drink)

I'm far from convinced that a paraffin lamp wouid everbstop an outdoor netty freezing! But it wouid mean you could check for vermin before disrobing
