@nordica I was thinking the same, it is the interconnectedness of everything that makes it feel like so much. It is not like you can just make a lifestyle change (eg turn down heating), because you still need food and a lack of fuel affects its production and distribution.
Compared to 2019, it does feel like we have a lot to deal with and worry about right now. I came home from work yesterday to a letter from DEFRA telling me there is bird flu in my area, and all I could think was 'ffs now what?'

kittensinthekitchen · 09/03/2022 12:59

@HairyToity

Today, I turned my heating off (except for 1.5 hours in the morning), and I thought - is this a new way of life. Minimal heating from now on.... Is a 110 mile round journey to enjoy a day on the beach, ever going to happen again. Will we use less fossil fuels and gas out of necessity. Are we all going to be much poorer from now on.
Oh noes, 1.5 hrs a morning in spring? Someone alert the church elders.
ChelseeDagger · 09/03/2022 13:00

Well yes, its the end times.

Buckle up buttercups Smile

MrsCremuel · 09/03/2022 13:00

Ah, maybe that’s why I’ve been dreaming of setting up a hippy commune/homestead with my nearest and dearest all of a sudden.

ClemFandangoo · 09/03/2022 13:03

🎵It’s the Age of Aquarius! Age of Aquariussssssss!🎵

ClemFandangoo · 09/03/2022 13:04

Seriously though, this irks me. Being barked at to ‘Discuss’ who are you? Why don’t you go first.

@HairyToity

Love the playlist!

It was a lazy start to a thread admittedly. I have a huge to do list, that I'm working through, and can't afford a long mumsnet distraction.

A feeling sums it up nicely. The world feels much much more unpredictable. Tease away!

the world has always been unpredictable. If I had a sixpence for everytime someone has said we are witnessing the dawn of a new age I'd have (counts on fingers) 19/3d (that is to show my age Grin )
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 09/03/2022 13:14

Agree with this, I grew up in council house only heating was a coal fire... it is not ideal but it will be fine

Likewise. However, that's not my memory. Our council house had been built for natural light rather than insulation so we had an absurd amount of windows.

The houses had been built on drained marsh land and the damp was horrendous.

Our bedrooms were irremediably cold and damp (to be fair, we had newspapers on the beds as we didn't have enough blankets). Family members had chronic chest infections that had an impact on their education and general health. During cold weather we all had chilblains that hurt with every step and opened sores to the bone on the shins.

ChiswickFlo · 09/03/2022 13:16

No.
Fuck off.

fruitbrewhaha · 09/03/2022 13:16

The age of Aquarius, which is supposed to herald peace and harmony.

If you read up on the procession of the vernal equinox we are entering or have already entered a new age. I don't think it was what people thought it would be though.

A less materialistic kinder future would be nice.

Yes, discuss wasn't the politest of opening lines, but I'm lazy and fancied sparking a debate. Dawn of a new age is how I felt this morning. Blush

I pray every night that someone will assassinate Putin, and the catastrophic war in Ukraine will soon be over.

The end of an era and a return to the 1970s where the rich got richer and those in the middle joined the poor

But in the 1970s unions were there to prevent some of the pain & now your jyst feckless if poor and should be doffing your cap for crumbs

ivykaty44 · 09/03/2022 13:28

Unfortunately assination is unlikely, but there’ll be others waiting to jump into his shoes

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 09/03/2022 13:28

It's going to be like the 1970s, but forever. Cold, dark, miserable, grim, crap food, power cuts and constant anxiety over The Bomb.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 09/03/2022 13:30

Hmm, DH has mowed the front and back lawns and nearly killed the dyson hoovered thru... The cats have had a lunch of tinned tuna and are currently comatose... DH had a lunch of salmon and wine and is in a similar state to the cats...
I'm enjoying the peace and quiet until one of them wakes the other 2. 😻🤦‍♀️

No. Everything is well on the way to how it was pre covid, so no changes there, and there have always been wars and conflict. They just flare up to more or less frightening levels periodically. I think its going to be a tough few years, but every few decades brings challenges, and on we all plod. Largely, always the same.

Indeed. All we need is the avocado bathroom suite. Hard times ahead.
UpintNorth · 09/03/2022 13:36

@SpinningTheSeedsOfLove you are my hero. Brilliant!

I'd swap our boring white one for a blue one. Grin

....the dawn of Aquarius.....Aquarius....

  1. Gosh chilblains, have not thought about those in years.
  2. @EmbarrassingHadrosaurus and others, I think we have responded to the principle of global warming. Motor cars are much more economical now. They use far less petrol. My Dads Cortina did 30mpg and needed a 1500cc engine. Many cars now have have smaller engines and do 50 mpg, cars are safer too.
  3. Lead was removed from petrol years ago, much better.
  4. I am old enough to remember the hole in the ozone layer. We all accepted the need for change to the gas in aerosols, scientists found an answer, it was adopted quickly. Ozone layer repaired. All kinds of improvements to industrial processes to make them more eco friendly.
We acted together in so many ways. Look at the support Ukraine is getting, unprecedented. Life has improved and life expectancy is much increased across the world. We have good cause to be OPIMISTIC.
Theunamedcat · 09/03/2022 13:39

I preferred the blue bathroom suite

As an adult I coveted the burgundy I have no idea why I live in a hard water area burgundy would look APPALLING
