What place did you hate living in? And which did you love?

Have you ever lived in a place you just couldn't get along with?

For me it was Seattle in the 90s. Beautiful city with loads to do, good job, but when my then-partner and I moved there we could just not get comfortable. Lots of very cool people, so hard to make friends. More of a "scene" than a community. We had a party with RSVPs and no one showed up. That sort of thing. Never happened before or since.

Conversely a small village in Cheshire was the warmest and most genuinely welcoming community I ever lived in. I felt at home from the day I arrived.

Loved New Zealand
Loved loved loved Newcastle (best place on earth)
Loved London
Loved Connecticut

Hated Kent (Folkestone and Maidstone)
Hated High Wycombe at first, came to grow fond of it as it is where we lived when daughter was a baby/ toddler
Hate small village in North Bucks where we live now that is very cliquey, but daughter loves her school so we aren't moving just yet. I'd love to move back to a city when she is older.

TheGratefulBread · 09/03/2022 10:18

Hated London. It's where I grew up, and first settled after graduating, but was never happy there.

Love where I'm living now, in the Lewes area, with Brighton on the doorstep. Love this area. Love East Sussex.

I really disliked living in Cambridge. The place is nice but I found people quite unfriendly and cold. Some of the market towns in the county have a similar vibe with, one in particular, with a greater than average demographic of rude, entitled and downright aggressive people.

I loved Glasgow due to the warmth and humour of the inhabitants. I enjoyed living in and around Bury St Edmunds but wouldn't say I loved it

Allgreyeverything · 09/03/2022 10:37

Loved London (Kensington and Chiswick), hated east London and Islington.
Absolutely could not get used to living in Leeds, despite friendly people, beautiful countryside, everything seemed like a bargain after living in London. It just felt like a different country and the weather was so shit. I now regret not trying harder to like it as I think it would be a great place if given a chance.

I love this thread.

@adriftabroad, it’s a brilliant thread isn’t it. I’ve told my DH how much I dislike living where we are as I find it unfriendly, boring and miserable and I think different places offer different things whereas he thinks a place is just a place and it’s all pretty much the same.

Instafreak231 · 09/03/2022 11:14

Hated Telford. Loved Shrewsbury. Loved loved loved Surrey.

wateronthebrain · 09/03/2022 11:21

hated Barcelona and couldn't get away from the entire country of Malta quick enough.
I didn't like Barcelona at all, incredibly seedy feel, beggars everywhere, lots of pickpocketing, threatening narrow streets with hoards of menacing men standing around, and I was constantly stared at (I think because I'm blonde and although not exceptionally tall, I stood out).
Didn't like Malta either. Valetta is attractive but the rest of the island is concrete apartment blocks, extremely built up, hellish resort holidays. Gozo was much nicer and quieter.

Whatterywhat · 09/03/2022 11:38

Hated Andover, it’s just grim. Love kent with everything on your doorstep

Cheeseandlobster · 09/03/2022 11:40

Love Brighton, Leeds and a very small mining village in South Yorkshire.

Hated Birmingham late 90's. Unfriendly and I worked in Nechells. Walking there in the dark and waiting at Duddeston station was terrifying.

noirchatsdeux · 09/03/2022 11:57

@BaruFisher I was born in Brisbane, my father got a job in the sugar mill in Babinda when I was 6, back in 1975. We lived there until 1978. It was a great place as a child. I'd love to go back and see it now.

BaruFisher · 09/03/2022 11:59

It’s still a beautiful place. Less than a thousand people but a beautiful community. We still have good friends there and visit regularly. I only lived there for 6 months, the wet season was too much for me but the people and the rainforest always keep me going back.

solbunny · 09/03/2022 12:07

Never truly hated anywhere tbh (but I'm no jet setter so perhaps I've just struck lucky with the few places I've lived) but I did love Birmingham and I miss it often. It gets an unfairly hard time imo, I loved the people there so much and I enjoyed the culture

Satsumaeater · 09/03/2022 12:31

I've lived in Devon, Cardiff, York, three places in Germany, South London, Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. I've not really disliked any of them, although the area of South London (Tooting) doesn't feel very safe. I also lived in Lancashire/Greater Manchester as a very small child but was too young to remember it - I like visiting that part of the world but it's different to living there.

I would like to go back to a couple of the places and spend more time there as I don't think I appreciated all their advantages when I was there, particularly Frankfurt and Kent. I was looking at a map of Frankfurt the other day and I missed so much (I was only there for six months, though).

DameHelena · 09/03/2022 12:31

Hate:
Village/rural Derbyshire. Dull, parochial, Brexity.

Love:
Glasgow. Vibrant, great people, beautiful buildings. Small enough to be comfortable and walkable but a proper city buzz.

And London. As Paddington says, 'Everyone is different, and that means anyone can fit in.' Smile

Jemimapuddleduk · 09/03/2022 12:32

Love London to visit but couldn’t get on with living there. Did 6 months and moved back to manchester.
