What place did you hate living in? And which did you love?

Have you ever lived in a place you just couldn't get along with?

For me it was Seattle in the 90s. Beautiful city with loads to do, good job, but when my then-partner and I moved there we could just not get comfortable. Lots of very cool people, so hard to make friends. More of a "scene" than a community. We had a party with RSVPs and no one showed up. That sort of thing. Never happened before or since.

Conversely a small village in Cheshire was the warmest and most genuinely welcoming community I ever lived in. I felt at home from the day I arrived.

Also, it’s a beautiful city!

Never hated anywhere I've lived. Can't say I 'loved' any either though. My dream place to live is Notting Hill. Oh, well!

Ginandcrispsarebliss · 09/03/2022 15:21

Loved London. I was lucky with nice neighbours, friends, felt like part of the community.
Move to a tiny kent village, 10 years ago. I don't hate it but I definitely don't fit in and have felt lonely from time to time. My children and OH are happy so no-one knows how I feel. I have met some lovely people and not so lovely people in the time I have been here. I don't get involved with any gossip and keep myself to myself. I feel like I am two people. I am much more out-going when I see my friends/family in London but quiet when back in the Village.
I think it comes down to the fact I prefer to live in the country or city/town. If it was just me, definitely a town/city but then my children's happiness comes first.

Hated living in London.

I lived there, right on portobello. It wasn’t great, so many properties empty as bought up by UHNW foreigners, consequently bars and restaurants often lack atmosphere on certain days of the week. It felt a bit tired. Certainly not the NH of old

Hates living in Boston lincs. Shit hole. Sorry.

Love loved loved living in Leicester - multicultural, fun, loads of culture and near other vibrant cities. Great shopping and transport I didn't drive then and it was easy! If it was Near the cost be perfect

The Midlands in general. I grew up in the East Midlands, live in the West Midlands - hate is too strong a word but it's way too far from interesting scenery, did the Peak district to death as a youth and WAY too far from the sea. So much of it is not natural and so many people - feel a bit oppressed in an existential way. The South Midlands is the pits - no culture or regional identity.

Love North West Scotland but couldn't live there all the year round with that climate.

Feel more at home in SW England and Wales.

GaiaWise · 09/03/2022 19:42

Love Swansea and Bristol.

Hated the posh part of SE England - Weybridge and Haslemere - small town, small mind Tory enclaves. Pretty in a twee way. I much prefer the mountains and coast in South and West Wales.

Actually you wouldn’t get me to agree to leave Wales now.

LanaSQ · 09/03/2022 19:49

Hated London, love Tyneside.

MintyIguana · 09/03/2022 19:53

Hated Devon from early teens (where I grew up). Loved London from early twenties to now (early 50s). Can see a possible move away but not now while kids are so happy here.

Hate: hare I’m currently living and have lived for the last 20 years.

If I could, I would go anywhere else.

Lacedwithgrace · 09/03/2022 20:07

Loved Seattle and Lancashire, Hated NY and London

Perfectlystill · 09/03/2022 20:13

I'm fascinated how Devon seems to be the most hated place to live on this thread.

I lived there for eight years and found the locals so unfriendly. It rained the whole time, and there was nothing to apart from walking/running/riding, all of which I did. It felt bleak and depressed.

Also interesting how much love there is for London on here - it often gets a bad rap on MN but I'm guessing that's from people who've never lived there.

Fascinating thread OP!

Never hated but absolutely LOVED Oxford 1988-1994. I was 19 when I arrived and wow those were some amazing times!
I have been back several times since and my heart still aches for the place and I would love to live there one day again!

Cocopogo · 09/03/2022 20:20

Not really got anything to add but surprised by so many people moving all over the place

user1460377741 · 09/03/2022 20:24

Hated Milan. Loved Singapore

Startingtomoveon · 09/03/2022 20:38

Loved:
West London - close to Hyde Park, could walk to Oxford St, felt much cleaner and safer (as much as London could be anyway) etc.

Hated:
East London - dirty, dodgy, run-down

Disliked but not hated:
New Zealand - my home country but I’d never go back if I can help it

Moonflower12 · 09/03/2022 20:45

@FoldedCard
I grew up in Cheltenham and loved it - that was over 30 years ago though.
I then moved to a village almost in but claims not to be very near Gloucester which I also really liked living in.

I then moved to a very small market town in the East Midlands that was so unfriendly I hated it.

We now live in Warwickshire- which is near enough to 'home'.

MintJulia · 09/03/2022 20:47

I hated Barford Warwickshire. There was nowhere to walk, no woodland, no space, no escape from the noise. It was surrounded by major roads and dual carriageways, it was like a one-square mile exercise yard. I hated the Midlands and was utterly miserable so I left.

I loved Montreal and Wiltshire. Smile

FASDE1517 · 09/03/2022 20:57

Loved Twickenham. Hated Isleworth (smells like actual poo)

Hellorhighwater · 09/03/2022 21:15

Never really hated anywhere, but never lived anywhere I’d choose to live if I were choosing just based on location (there’s always been loads of other factors)

I’m making a plan about where to move to when DD is 18. No idea where. None. Maybe I won’t, maybe I’ll just bumble about in my camper van until I find somewhere I like enough to live there….
