What place did you hate living in? And which did you love?

Have you ever lived in a place you just couldn't get along with?

For me it was Seattle in the 90s. Beautiful city with loads to do, good job, but when my then-partner and I moved there we could just not get comfortable. Lots of very cool people, so hard to make friends. More of a "scene" than a community. We had a party with RSVPs and no one showed up. That sort of thing. Never happened before or since.

Conversely a small village in Cheshire was the warmest and most genuinely welcoming community I ever lived in. I felt at home from the day I arrived.

My favourite place I lived was southend on sea and that was only because I had the beach ⛱️ in walking distance.

I don't really like where we live now (Wembley) but I don't hate it.

I hate where

I really didn’t like Ormskirk. Or Provence.
I loved Paris, northern Tuscany (above Lucca)
Didn’t find Brighton half as nice as other people seem to.

Hated Brighton. Went to uni there and ended up staying for 6 years for various reasons. Hated every second of it and celebrated when we finally left. Shame, because I wanted to like it. IMO it's okay to visit but not to live.

I've lived in a few places but nowhere I've really loved. All of them better than Brighton, though!

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 08/03/2022 23:00

I’ve lived in 5 places in my 34 years, 4 of them in london... 2 of them were council (2nd one was half council and half owned) my mum got a mortgage, but the first council estate we lived on was horrific. At the time it was fine, when I think back it was a shithole. My grandparents still live there now. I dread going to visit, it’s even more downhill than it was back then.

Hated Lincolnshire. Love London
Interesting as having been born and raised in Lincolnshire nothing compares, I've lived in 4 different cities and London was by far the worst, returned to Lincolnshire and life is brilliant here.

Hated living in London.

Loved living in the Surrey hills.

AdoptedBumpkin · 08/03/2022 23:10

Not really hated anywhere I've lived. I was worried I might hate Derbyshire but I've become settled here, even thought it's rather different to London and Surrey.

Hated the Lake District—always loved visiting but when I lived there as a young woman I felt a strange mixture of lonely and preyed upon by equally lonely but unpleasant men.

Hated Birmingham—again lonely, never found my tribe, was in an academic setting that was misogynistic and fusty.

Loved small town in Lancashire—good community feeling and you can get a nice house for relatively little money. Also loved village in Sussex—fab countryside and friendly neighbours.
