What place did you hate living in? And which did you love?

Have you ever lived in a place you just couldn't get along with?

For me it was Seattle in the 90s. Beautiful city with loads to do, good job, but when my then-partner and I moved there we could just not get comfortable. Lots of very cool people, so hard to make friends. More of a "scene" than a community. We had a party with RSVPs and no one showed up. That sort of thing. Never happened before or since.

Conversely a small village in Cheshire was the warmest and most genuinely welcoming community I ever lived in. I felt at home from the day I arrived.

Hate Ibiza, but great for a holiday

AdoptedBumpkin · 09/03/2022 00:24

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Funnily enough, I asked because I've met a few friendly Exeter people. Maybe they were friendlier than most.

SofiaJessica4 · 09/03/2022 00:38

Loved Hampstead / Finchley and central London and the Caribbean
Hated Ireland and the borders of Northamptonshire
Like (ish) Oxford

wateronthebrain · 09/03/2022 00:46

Lived in a few different cities and countries, but I don't feel that strongly either way about where I've lived, which is a bit depressing when I think about it! I suppose Nottingham was the most grim, because of antisocial behaviour and the mediocrity of the place. I probably liked London or Edinburgh best.

FruitandPasta · 09/03/2022 01:03

London, great city but not much fun when you are poor, it was grinding and miserable but to visit now and get to do all the things I couldn't afford then, like going to a musical is great.
Best place probably Falkirk, very friendly, easy enough to jump on a train to Edinburgh or Stirling.

DramaAlpaca · 09/03/2022 01:33

Hated the large, faceless town in the SE of England where I lived for five years. Lived there because of its relatively cheap house prices and good trains to London, but was so glad to leave.

Love the rural Irish village where I live now, it's such a great community.

Createabitofuntruenews · 09/03/2022 02:26

Hated Sutton Coldfield.
Hated London.

Loved Bristol.
Loved Milan.

@Bonabee

Absolutely hated a very small village in South Wales. Everyone was related and they loved to point out you would never be accepted if you weren't born there. Considering the small mindedness I took that as a compliment. Happy where I am now Smile

Can't mention the place name as they will probably start building a wicker man Grin

I lived in a village in Gwynedd exactly as you as describe, absolutely hated it. Funnily enough I live in A large town in South West Wales now and couldn't be happier

OP I was going to say Seattle - love! But I grew up nearby and moved back with DH & DC just in time for the pandemic (after 15 years in London). I’m just so bloody grateful we could afford a bigger house and be close to the outdoors during all the lockdowns! I hear we Seattleites are hard to break in to though, I think everyone is friendly but I had a magic friendship group from primary school and we’re all still friends + some later additions and partners/kids etc.

London, loved for a long time and then got really sick of the crowds, the noise, the dirt and the expense in my early 30s.

Firebird83 · 09/03/2022 03:30

Hated Northern Ireland
Loved Devon (Exeter actually)

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 09/03/2022 03:51

Hated Hastings. Felt really isolated, nowhere near a motorway etc.
Love where I am now (Kent) but tbh in both instances it's probably more down to my mental state/phase of life.

SpikeySmooth · 09/03/2022 04:04

Liked Winchester, Edinburgh, York & Isle of Wight.

Felt out of place in Bath, hated Barcelona and couldn't get away from the entire country of Malta quick enough.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 09/03/2022 04:13

Hated Grantham and love Amersfoort. Love Amsterdam, and Bath, hate Bristol.

SpicyChickenCurry · 09/03/2022 04:22

Hated, loathed and detested Luton and London, loved living in Torquay and now love living in Perth, Australia even more.

SalsaLove · 09/03/2022 04:35

Florida
Reading

Loved: Washington D.C.,
Oxfordshire

We had a party with RSVPs and no one showed up.

I think this is a west coast thing, OP. We live in British Columbia. When we moved here friends told us about "the BC Bail" - people bail last minute on events and commitments, often with little warning. I think it's seen as laidback, but it's just rude!

Coffeetree · 09/03/2022 05:24

Yes maybe you're right. My then-partner and I are from New England and looking back now we were dealing with the culture clash as well.

Salsalove, you loved living in Washington DC?! You have to say more. It looks like a dreadful place to live. You've really intrigued me!

Hated Devon . Lived in a village near Ivybridge . I have moved around quite a lot in my life ( including living in Australia, Belgium as well as Edinburgh, Aberdeen , London)
I have never met such unfriendly people in my life as those in Devon .
Loved Edinburgh

garlictwist · 09/03/2022 05:49

@JohnMcCainsDeathStare

Didn't like Bedfordshire - wierdly insular. Made a grand total of 0 friends from the village despite attempting to volunteer at a youth club. Which went down like a turd sandwich when it transpired that they thought I was another youth not an adult with a CRB check.

Loved Durham and the surrounding area. People were friendly, despite pockets of extreme poverty. Wonderful countryside with lots to explore - went to university there, still miss it if not the climate.

That's funny. I hated Durham (also went to uni there). I thought the countryside was very drab and not very inspiring and the town was too small and didn't have a nice feel.

I thought it was very dry, however, but I'm from west Yorks where it is not!

WhatAHexIGotInto · 09/03/2022 05:51

Loved Glasgow
Hated London and stayed far too long
Love rural Bedfordshire.

BaruFisher · 09/03/2022 06:08

I can’t believe out of the tiny population of Babinda, that another person on mumsnet has lived there!

I loved living in Belfast, Babinda and Launceston.
Hated Dublin, Blackwater QLD and Cooma NSW

BaruFisher · 09/03/2022 06:08

The Launceston is in Tasmania not the U.K.

658Doyouknowwheremysparkis · 09/03/2022 06:13

Hated outskirts of Derby loved St Albans ( couldn’t believe they were in the same country, so different)
