Left necklace in Hotel room but it's gone

Any advice. I'm absolutely gutted. I had a necklace that I rarely wore, huge sentimental value, special occasion so wore it. Had a shower and put it on the shelf in the bathroom. Forgot about it as not used to wearing it. Left at 12, rang in a panic at 12.45 and it's gone. Hotel couldn't actually care less, it's gone tough! reported to Police but nothing they can do. I know it's my own fault, I'm kicking myself but is there anything at all I can do.

Which hotel was it? (Chain or independent?). If chain, contact head office. CCTV?

Lightstoobright · 08/03/2022 17:58

Did you speak to the manager? They should have lost property? Have they spoken to the cleaners?

eosmum · 08/03/2022 18:00

Independent, they say they reviewed the CCTV but wouldn't tell me what was on it.

So you checked out at 12? And within 45 minutes it was gone? Ask them who had been in the room?

KylieCharlene · 08/03/2022 18:01

The hotel will know who has had access to that room today, who was responsible for cleaning it and who else was on shift who could have gone in there.
I'd call the police. They will speak to the staff who were on duty.

ImSaxyAndIKnowIt · 08/03/2022 18:01

Not a necklace but same thing happened to me SIL, she left some GHD’s and a phone charger plugged in behind the telly. Remembered half a hour after checking out, called the hotel and they denied all knowledge. She did she she would be reporting it to the police and they said go ahead. She rang a few times afterwards but they said they weren’t there! Disgusting

eosmum · 08/03/2022 18:03

Spoken to two assistant managers, manager will ring me, it's been three days now and no call, I keep ringing. Claim they spoke to housekeeping staff and they didn't see it. I 100% know it was there.

I know it's gone, it was irreplaceable, handed down through the family and I'm the one who has lost it. Police don't want to know, gave me a number for insurance. It wasn't actually worth much, just sentimental.

Thanks everyone I know I was just clutching at straws posting here.

@ImSaxyAndIKnowIt it's disgusting isn't it. I wish karma was a thing Sad

CCTV? Would possibly show who went in/out of room or along the corridor after you'd left?
They don't want police involved and hoping that in a few days it'll blow over and you'll put it down as unfortunate but take no action.
Definitely call the police. It's theft.

KylieCharlene · 08/03/2022 18:10

Just read update.
Disgusting the police haven't spoken to the hotel staff.

Oblomov22 · 08/03/2022 18:10

Police are useless aren't they? Totally non interested. So sorry OP. Sad

billy1966 · 08/03/2022 18:10

Oh lord that is so upsetting.
Flowers

Jammybadger · 08/03/2022 18:11

Can you offer a reward? Say £100 no questions asked?

Oblomov22 · 08/03/2022 18:11

Put it on social media eg Twitter?

DownWhichOfLate · 08/03/2022 18:11

Keep ringing to speak to manager. They need to review cctv and speak to all staff who were on shift that day. Persistence is key.

BlanketsBanned · 08/03/2022 18:12

Any news, the police need to be informed so they can interview the staff and watch the CCTV.

GizmosEveningBath · 08/03/2022 18:13

Keep calling the managers, if it's a chain contact head office. Leave a shitty review.

KylieCharlene · 08/03/2022 18:13

At the very least (and I know this doesn't help you) I'd post a review to warn other potential guests that the hotel wasn't very helpful when one of your belongings went 'missing'.

Justmuddlingalong · 08/03/2022 18:13

I would warn prospective guests on review websites about your problem and the hotel's lack of interest in helping you.

eosmum · 08/03/2022 18:13

@Jammybadger I will do that.

@Oblomov22 my sister has twitter I'll ask her.

Thanks guys.

I won't be going away. But as one of the Assistant Managers said, they have no proof that it was there.

I will leave a review in a week or so, just see if there is any chance of it coming back.

Unless there is CCTV in the bathroom it's irrelevant, it would only show Joe Bloggs entering the room. OP would have to prove that the necklace was there which is impossible in order to prove Joe carried out theft.

BaggiesBride · 08/03/2022 18:18

Absolutely gutted for you. I know you probably don't want to hear it, but please don't beat yourself up over it. We're human and we make mistakes. I would still keep pestering management, they need to speak to the house keeping staff. Good luck 💐
Btw, I'm a great believer in Karma xx

DameMargaretofChalfont · 08/03/2022 18:22

Why not tell the hotel that you'll offer a £50 reward for its return.

If the necklace doesn't have much real financial value someone might "find it" and swap it for the reward.

I know it's not ideal because you're effectively paying a thief but for such a sentimental item I'd consider it.
