Left necklace in Hotel room but it's gone

Any advice. I'm absolutely gutted. I had a necklace that I rarely wore, huge sentimental value, special occasion so wore it. Had a shower and put it on the shelf in the bathroom. Forgot about it as not used to wearing it. Left at 12, rang in a panic at 12.45 and it's gone. Hotel couldn't actually care less, it's gone tough! reported to Police but nothing they can do. I know it's my own fault, I'm kicking myself but is there anything at all I can do.

Perhaps make a handwritten poster explaining the situation and offering a reward. Ask the manager to stick it up on the staff room. Someone might ‘find’ it.

SparklingLime · 08/03/2022 18:22

Add your email/mobile so anyone could contact you direct.

Idratherhaveacuppa · 08/03/2022 18:26

This happened to a family member. They ended up taking the hotel to court. They didn't get the item back (and it wasn't sentimental luckily) but they got compensation.
They knew it could only have been housekeeping. They had passed them as they were leaving the room and ran back up within minutes.
They did what you have already done - spoke to various managers and the police and eventually called their bluff with the help of a family member who works vaguely within legal (nothing to do with this but the hotel didn't need to know)
It went to court and the magistrate ruled in their favour.
Unfortunately it may not help you get a sentimental piece back but you could declare an amnesty period before taking matters "further" and speaking to your solicitor?

Georgyporky · 08/03/2022 18:27

I believe the Police have better things to do than investigate an alleged petty theft.
I was just given a crime number for an obvious break-in & substantial robbery.

2bazookas · 08/03/2022 18:31

In the space of 45 minutes, at lunch time, it;s possible whoever you spoke to had not yet talked to all the cleaning staff or vice versa. If you have a picture of the necklace I'd send them a copy, say its of great sentimental value and if some member of staff found it and put it in a safe place, you would like to express your appreciation with a reward.

silverlace · 08/03/2022 18:34

Rather than speak to assistant managers ask to speak to the Housekeeping Manager and explain and ask them if it has been handed in and not yet given to lost property. If you don't get anywhere with that she/he will know who serviced the room so see if they can help it to appear.

TheHorrorOfIt · 08/03/2022 18:37

@Jammybadger

Can you offer a reward? Say £100 no questions asked?
Actually that’s a good idea! Particularly if it’s not worth much (can you tell that by looking at it?)
noblegreenk · 08/03/2022 18:41

Similar thing happened to me when I stayed at the Europa in Belfast. They didn't give a shit either. I've been back to Belfast several times since and I refuse to stay there. I also tell anyone who'll listen what thieving so and so's they are.

Walkingtheplank · 08/03/2022 18:46

I once went down to breakfast at a hotel. The maid was along the corridor and we didnt want her to go intoso we put the Do Not Disturb sign on.

Came back after breakfast and went to change into the trousers I'd laid on the bed (which happen to be the most expensive trousers I've ever owned). But they weren't there. The hotel chain absolutely wouldnt help.

The company I worked for used this hotel chain frequently and somebody would have something stolen everytime.

It seems some hotels just dont care if they have such a reputation.

MrsClatterbuck · 08/03/2022 18:48

Stayed at a really nice 4 star hotel. Not a chain. One morning we had housekeeping knock on our door at 8am to clean our room. Dh told them to come back later and I think they were a bit miffed. We were still in bed.
Anyway we vacated our room before the stated time and when we got home which was about 1 hour 30 mins away I realised we had left our 2
phone chargers and my iPad charger. Phoned and no one had handed them in. My phone was a new Samsung Galaxy 4 I got the iPad charger back but not the others. Still think it was the person who called at our room so early but who knows. No way that they weren't found by housekeeping. Or only the iPad charger was there and not the others.
At least we could replace the chargers but not so for you op.

JustFrustrated · 08/03/2022 18:49

God that's shit. Im so sorry.

I was staying at a hotel the other week, I left my vape charger and bottle of foundation. The manager called me at lunch time to tell me! Even offered to post them down, but I was still in the area. I appreciate her so much more now

beecrazy · 08/03/2022 19:00

Leaving our Singapore hotel for a very early flight home, I'd taken my jewellery from the safe but left it on the table. Realised as soon as we unpacked at home. We contacted the hotel, they initially said it wasn't there, then next day when we got in touch again they said it had been found. When we said we'd arrange a courier they said they'd made a mistake and they hadn't got it after all. I'm sure us being willing to pay for a courier made them realise its value (very valuable!) Our insurance paid up but the jewellery had great sentimental value as well as monetary

eosmum · 08/03/2022 19:18

Thanks to you all, I’m so sorry that it has happened to so many of you, it’s bloody lousy. Still no call from manager, but I’ll be back on tomorrow and will see if I can offer a reward.

TillyTopper · 08/03/2022 19:43

So sorry OP, that's gutting.
I'd definitely try the reward. Also, keep an eye on facebook for sales pages in the local area around the hotel. Do a google image search frequency to see if you spot it. If you have a pic of you that weekend with it on it might help your case if you went to court.

I have had similar trouble in a hotel abroad on a business trip. I was there a week, it was quite a large room and I realised the cleaner was "hiding" things - so not taking them, but putting where I wouldn't see them. Think a nice cardigan put under the dressing gown (which I hadn't used, so you couldn't see it). Probably in the hopes that I'd leave them (then maybe not technically stealing).

Dogmummy1980 · 08/03/2022 19:47

I’d be so upset - I’ve a similar item that I’d be heartbroken to lose and as a result never wear it

I do however recall a time I left one of my bras in a hotel room, didn’t realise until a day or so later and it was in their lost property.

I was more embarrassed having to explain to a poor young lad who answered the phone - I’m not the smallest breasted lady - DP can literally fit his head in my bras!! Grin Anyway upshot is they posted it out to me!!

Fingers crossed they eventually come clean - keep at them!! I’d recommend a ‘reward’ as someone else has mentioned

loopycurtains · 08/03/2022 20:00

@ImSaxyAndIKnowIt

Not a necklace but same thing happened to me SIL, she left some GHD’s and a phone charger plugged in behind the telly. Remembered half a hour after checking out, called the hotel and they denied all knowledge. She did she she would be reporting it to the police and they said go ahead. She rang a few times afterwards but they said they weren’t there! Disgusting
Oddly, exactly the same happened to me. GHDs and one of the new expensive phone chargers. I assume the cleaning staff stole them but the hotel weren't interested. Wish I'd put it on trip advisor. But they've certainly lost my business forever in a town I visit regularly. So upsetting.
cumbriancow · 08/03/2022 20:05

Oh no, what a shame. I'm so sorry OP.

I'm not sure what the manager can do though. You have no proof you left it in the room, and no proof that house keeping took it. I'm not sure where the manager would stand if they accused staff of theft without proof, but I imagine it would lay them open to legal action by staff. You also can't expect them to pay for your loss. Obviously you know you are genuine, but it could be a scam. I've worked in hotels and honestly the levels of theft and attempts to get money (things like writing a terrible review on line and then contacting the front desk offering to take it down for cash) are high.

I think the best thing is to offer a reward, and if that fails make a claim on your insurance.

givemeallthecheese · 08/03/2022 20:07

Was the shelf in the bathroom directly over a sink? Could it have fallen off and down the plug?

Sodullincomparison · 08/03/2022 20:29

I had this exact same thing. I went back 30 minutes after check in and was told it was not there.

I asked to see the room and I could remember exactly where it was and was told it had already been cleaned and nothing was there.

I told them the police would be informed so I could claim on insurance and miraculously it was then found ten minutes later.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 08/03/2022 20:42

That's awful op. Would just like to tell a reverse story though... Room cleaner here. Left my Bluetooth speaker in a room post half stay clean up.. Rang my boss who asked the occupant. Wasn't left there apparently.. Some people just like a freebie and have no moral compass.
Leave a bad review op. It is deserved.

urbanbuddha · 08/03/2022 20:48

I wish karma was a thing

Karma is a thing;

Now as a man is like this or like that,
according as he acts and according as he behaves, so will he be;
a man of good acts will become good, a man of bad acts, bad;
he becomes pure by pure deeds, bad by bad deeds;

And here they say that a person consists of desires,
and as is his desire, so is his will;
and as is his will, so is his deed;
and whatever deed he does, that he will reap.

I work in housekeeping in a hotel and we get an absurd amount of phone chargers left behind. No one ever calls so they get tossed in a bag of phone chargers that are loaned out to guests who ask. Other lost property is bagged and tagged though.

Something similar happened to me once, I used the spa in the hotel and put my wedding and engagement ring in the room safe. When I went to get them out the wedding ring was gone (but oddly not the engagement one). Reported it to reception, they didn’t care. I demanded that they see who went into the room, they claimed no one had. I asked to see the key card log and they wouldn’t.

They swapped us rooms so they could have a good look, I didn’t want to leave my things in the room while they did it. I went back out and was going to report it to the police when they “miraculously” found it under a flap in the safe. There was no flap in the safe at all. And it was odd it only reappeared after I threatened to go to the police

So keep on at them. How far away is the hotel? Would it be feasible to drive down there and demand to see the manager?

helpfulperson · 09/03/2022 09:51

I know you say you are sure you left it there but the hotel have no proof of that and probably deal with people claiming to have left stuff daily.

There are various threads on here with people being sure they put something somewhere for it to turn up elsewhere. One women claim on her insurance for a diamond ring.
