Hi all

What were your nice/kind words or compliments you have had that surprised you either from strangers or those you know?

Some I can remember right now....
In another life, my then line manager smiled at me and said I didn't need make up implying I was pretty bare faced.

One colleague told me that I had a lovely smile, also got told this by a laughter yoga lady the first time I met her.
Same colleague said I had a lovely way of putting people at ease.

A mindfulness massage therapist after massing me (without any conversation between us)
randomly said to me that she feels I have a lot to the world and I should believe myself more!

All these caught me by surprise and warmed my cold cold heart 😂

Om tallish and fatish, and generally chunky and “robust”. It has taken me decades to accept that I will never be slim, even I was much leaner. Out for dinner with friends one day, a very slim, petite woman said she wished she was tall and strong like me. I’ve always thought of myself as big and clumpy, rather than tall and strong..

At work I was described as being “just like x”. X is known for being stubborn, very focused on details.abs always (technically) right. I took this as a compliment!

I could swim in your eyes they sparkle, said a workmate I’ve hazel eyes that change colour or folks say they do .

You get things done said a volunteer which I took as a compliment.

Wow you don’t look old enough to have that many kids, some were step kids 😂 😂 said a complete stranger.

From a surgeon who had just called me wilful and stubborn 8 weeks earlier (I sent him a photo of me on my horse 8 weeks post emergency spinal surgery)
"I think I meant determined as that's the best recovery I've seen and I have the photo on my wall in my office to remind me why I do my job"

Years ago, on a ferry journey the weather was awful and I was on my own with my 3 kids who were between about 18 months and 8. They were all tired and get increasingly scared by the weather so we were cuddled up in a corner in the lounge area and I was desperately trying to distract them and struggling a bit to keep things under control . Not far from us was a group of youngish women - a hen party by the looks of things - some of whom were quite drunk and a bit rowdy. Several of them kept staring over at us which was a bit unnerving. After a while my 18 month old was getting very fractious so I started breastfeeding him which did settle him, but the women were very obviously staring and whispering to each other by then and I felt very uncomfortable. Then several of them disappeared but about 10 mins later they came back and walked straight towards me. Oh great I thought, they are going to have a go at me. That's all I need. But I was wrong. They produced a bag of sweets, comics and a colouring book they'd bought for my children from the on board shop and proceeded to tell me I was doing a great job and not to worry, we'd be in harbour soon. I was really touched- and it taught me a lesson. I'd been thinking they were judging me, but actually it was me judging them!

When I was about 13/14 I was very quiet and quite invisible in school. One day, out of the blue, one of the more popular girls came up to me and said they'd all been chatting about who was pretty in our year group, and that everyone had agreed that I was very pretty. I was chuffed that they had noticed me at all!

An older lady in the swimming pool changing rooms said I didn’t look old enough to have a baby. I do assume she didn’t have her glasses on as I was 37 at the time!

In the days when I had a tiny waist I had a beautiful work coat, that nipped in at the waist then flared out. A random man said as he passed that the coat looked beautiful in me.

I can't actually remember any compliments Confused

However I did read my medical records once and my gynae said I had 'an unremarkable vagina'. Rude

I was at a work xmas party that I'd been feeling a bit nervous about attending as I usually do about parties. I tried hard on the night to mingle and chat, which is something I had been trying to do better at and working on for a while. Anyway later in the night someone (who hadn't been working there long) told me I had a great "party manner", and he wished he could talk to people as easily as I did. If only he knew! But it was nice to know my hard work had paid off, for that one night at least.

A few years back when our kids were in the 7-10yo range (i.e. I still had a say in what they wore), we were standing around with DH in our hotel lobby about to go out for a pre-Christmas meal when a very glam young woman came by and said "what a beautiful family! You like something straight out of a Ralph Lauren ad". I was thrilled lol.

My DGran also grabbed one of my wrist's once, looked at it approvingly and said "Lovely! You can thank generations of stonecutters for them!" HmmGrin

Last time I had a breast screen, the technician said " Lucky you to have such youthful-looking breasts". Considering that I'm 63, anything that looks youthful is a bonus !

Not necessarily !! In medical terminology “unremarkable” means there is nothing wrong with it. So a completely valid remark in a OBGYN type situation.. Rude maybe it it’s from a totally unrelated specialist.

My bf is quite shy and soaring with words snd shows his feelings by doing things for me (like painting my house) than paying compliments. After our first night together which was amazing and very tender and loving he kept remarking how wonderfully comfortable my duvet was… After another night of great passion he messaged me to thank me for the lovely food. He has often commented that I have a strong back…Luckily I am just amused by these.

From a student.

You're crazy Miss, but you are our type of crazy.

PartyAtSueGrays · 09/03/2022 10:30

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

I was kind of being sarcastic Wink

TroublesomeTrucks · 09/03/2022 10:44

I had gone for a pub meal with now DH and a woman told us we looked so happy together. I had just told him I was pregnant with our eldest.

Love this
fruitbat987 · 09/03/2022 18:59

someone told me I had a very French way of dressing. I loved that.
Someone told me they felt safe with me. Loved that too.
When I was heavily pregnant and on holiday, feeling fat and unattractive, one of the (very cute) male reps walked past and said "morning beautiful" That made my day.

A very lovely lady I know (I adore her - she is like the sunshine!) told me she can tell I'm happy. It sounds odd, but I am very blessed and secure in my life and I was pleased that it comes across. I'm not explaining it well but it meant a lot, especially coming from her.
