Hi all

What were your nice/kind words or compliments you have had that surprised you either from strangers or those you know?

Some I can remember right now....
In another life, my then line manager smiled at me and said I didn't need make up implying I was pretty bare faced.

One colleague told me that I had a lovely smile, also got told this by a laughter yoga lady the first time I met her.
Same colleague said I had a lovely way of putting people at ease.

A mindfulness massage therapist after massing me (without any conversation between us)
randomly said to me that she feels I have a lot to the world and I should believe myself more!

All these caught me by surprise and warmed my cold cold heart 😂

On holiday a few years ago. Id recently developed an allergy that meant my arms, legs and torso were covered in hives that itched and (at night bled like buggery.

I was mostly confining myself to my apartment, but one day I needed to go out. I dressed to cover up,but loose and floaty. As I came out of a shop a woman shouted from across the road "what a beautiful outfit".

It made my holiday. And now the bastard allergy has returned, it's one of the few things making it bearable.

I was told recently that I am very attractive and look like Natalie Wood - I was at work, looking pretty scruffy so lovely to hear!

Was also once complimented on my eyebrows, my response was "thanks, I grew them myself "BlushGrin

As I came out of a changing room to show DH a dress a lady said 'ooh you look just like Felicity Kendal...from the back' !

Disfordragon · 08/03/2022 19:49

I’ve had some rally difficult years and spent a lot of my life being angry. I’ve turned my life around in the last 18 months. Started a new job a year ago and 6 months ago my boss said ‘I’ve literally never seen you without a smile’. Made me so happy.

Given that she was a famous 'rear of the year' winner that's a fabulous compliment!

I once got told I had lovely legs, just like a police woman's. Confused

shadypines · 08/03/2022 19:52

A colleague once sat opposite me in the office and stated very seriously that I looked like Fenella Fielding; I most certainly don't, I wish I did...sigh. The only thing I could put it down to was that she was sleep deprived as we were probably about 4 nights in to a week of nights and it was about 4am...gahhh.

Come to think of it, I probably look more like Oddbod! Sad

tunainatin · 08/03/2022 19:52

I was described by someone at work as calm, cheerful and competent. I am usually cheerful but never feel calm or competent so it's nice to know I put on a good disguise Grin

FlowerPower4 · 08/03/2022 19:53

Years ago one of my law professors told me my voice was very beautiful and pleasant to listen to. He said I had a true "radio voice".

It might seem random and insignificant, but the fact that someone like him complimented me on it gave my confidence a massive boost.

The electrician (working on big house project on and off for the last 4 years now) when i texted him recently about doing something he answered completely out of the blue ''Of course - you know i'd do anything for you with that beautiful smile :) ''.

ShockBlush

Maybe he'd had a few drinks, i dunno, but it cheered me up Grin

Well, as I emerged from a cubicle in IKEA toilets last Friday, a young girl (about 8) who was washing her hands looked approving and said "I like your shiny hair."

I think it was the blindingly harsh lights making it shiny, but I will take any compliment these days.

Masdintle · 08/03/2022 20:09

I'm having a down day so can I share three of mine to cheer me up?

I was a really ugly teenager with horrible hair and crap clothes. At work in my 40s a colleague said she couldn't believe I'd been an ugly teenager given how I looked now.

A recent one on a teams meeting I was being a bit silly and jokey and making people laugh, and a young colleague said "oh Mas, you remind me of sunshine"

And I worked on a switchboard and was told I had a voice like melted honey.

Thanks for this thread, it's made me feel better Smile

An osteopath once told me I have great hips, a dentist complimented me on my nice wide palate and a doctor approvingly commented on my big pupils. I'm sensing a theme here!

pumpkinpie01 · 08/03/2022 20:25

My ds had a friend round to play earlier , the mum came to collect t him and said to me ' you just never age ' .Made my night

This memory will stay with me forever! First week in a new job in a new school. Little girl makes me a card, on the front it proclaims 'To the second best teacher!' Inside was the message 'If you work hard you will be as good as (her teacher from last years name!)' I showed it to said teacher and she kept it and said whenever things were tough she had a quick look at it.

More personal was a card from a child who was leaving year 2 and I taught her in Year 2. It was handmade and had the message inside 'You made me believe in myself, thank you.' It still makes me emotional remembering when she gave it to me with a box of malteasers and said she would never forget me. Of course she is now an adult herself but wherever she is I hope she is happy.

TracyMosby · 08/03/2022 20:29

I bloke i worked with for a year, on his final day before he left, and also left the country to move abroad, said to me that he always liked how I dressed, optimistic. Grin

AdoraBell · 08/03/2022 20:32

Stopped in a motorway services and I went coffee shop, young lady who served me said “you are so chic” I really didn’t think I was, but I just went with it and said Thank you 😊

bassackwards · 08/03/2022 20:35

Someone once told me I looked Parisian Smile

TonksInPurple · 08/03/2022 20:40

Nurse doing my smear once told me I had a very neat cervix

peaceanddove · 08/03/2022 20:51

Several nurses have complimented me on how beautiful my tummy tuck scar is. Yes, really. It's incredibly neat, very thin and already fading to a pale silver.

DD2 (who is very sparing with her compliments) recently told me that she intended raising her own children just how she has been raised - because she thinks we have done a really good job. Which is actually a big compliment to herself too, when you think about it Hmm

BeyondMyWits · 08/03/2022 20:56

Was on a train with my eldest when she was about 5 or 6. We were chatting to a French couple across the table the gentleman (he was very gentlemanly) said to me "You do have a very elegant neck" , I was chuffed to bits...

when we got home Dd said to Dh, "we were on a train and a man told mummy she had an elephant neck"... still makes me laugh

DreamTheMoors · 08/03/2022 20:59

My friend and I were at the market, got out the car & were crossing the large lot when a youngish woman came up — crying, hysterical, saying if she didn’t have such & such amount of money by the end of the day, the care home would toss her mother out.
Whether that was true or not I don’t know, but I’m convinced the young woman thought it was true. She seemed very genuine.
I gave her 20 quid.
After we got inside, I asked my friend if I was stupid and a mark, because I felt sheepish. She replied, “No, Dream - you did what you were supposed to do.”
I took that as a compliment.

frazzled101 · 08/03/2022 21:00

After a trip to a gynaecologist where I was extremely nervous, she examined me and told me I had gorgeous innards! It makes me laugh every time I think of it!

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2022 21:01

I've had odd and unexpected, "you look like John Lennon", in Liverpool so definitely meant as a compliment.

My favourite though was in the Law Courts when I went in to divorce exH. Feeling wobbly and nervous, I asked security where to go. He said, "who would divorce YOU?" incredulously. Made my day. Plus I got to say, "actually I'm divorcing him" Grin
