Hi all

What were your nice/kind words or compliments you have had that surprised you either from strangers or those you know?

Some I can remember right now....
In another life, my then line manager smiled at me and said I didn't need make up implying I was pretty bare faced.

One colleague told me that I had a lovely smile, also got told this by a laughter yoga lady the first time I met her.
Same colleague said I had a lovely way of putting people at ease.

A mindfulness massage therapist after massing me (without any conversation between us)
randomly said to me that she feels I have a lot to the world and I should believe myself more!

All these caught me by surprise and warmed my cold cold heart 😂

@Itstheprinciple

The nurse told me I had a lovely cervix after doing my smear. I'm sure she just meant it looked healthy!
That's certainly random but reassuring!

At the youth group I used to organise, a parent helper said "you're so organised!" I always felt disorganised but that made me realise that actually I was running at 99% efficiency and blaming myself for the 1% that was missing. It was a lightbulb moment for me.
Oh gosh I think I really needed to read that today! Thanks Smile

I needed x rays on my wrists to check for osteoarthritis (It wasn't that, it was me sleeping with my wrists at stupid angles that was causing the pain!). The x ray lady told me I am really good at following instructions for how to place my hands. I was ridiculously pleased at this compliment!

Bearnecessity · 08/03/2022 18:16

I was once told by an old colleague.....that he loved the way the room felt when I had been it it....☺️

As a TA, I was delighted when a 7 year old girl complimented me on my eyeliner today.

For reference, I always have flicky cateye liner and its always perfect - skills honed over decades. So for a child to notice and say how nice it looked made me GrinGrinGrinGrin

ClariceQuiff · 08/03/2022 18:20

A neurologist (examining a scan of it) told me my brain was 'beautiful' Grin .

At the hairdressers the other day an elderly lady arrived for her appointment while my stylist was blow drying my hair. The lady took a seat behind mine while she waited. I noticed she kept watching me, and at the end of my appointment when I stood up to go and pay, said I looked beautiful.

It was a very lovely and unexpected compliment which really boosted me :)

sleaf · 08/03/2022 18:27

"He thinks you're absolutely wonderful!" - from my line manager regarding the overall boss's thoughts about me a few weeks into a new job.

Also ''word is getting around about how efficient you are" - from second line manager, again a few weeks into a new job.

sleaf · 08/03/2022 18:28

"I wish all clients were like you" - from my vet...who has also previously complimented me on my hair colour.

Notmrsfitz · 08/03/2022 18:29

I was crossing the road with my youngest son in his buggy and a man stopped to let me cross - I smiled and said Thankyou.
As I got a bit further up the road - I heard a shout and turned around, it was the man!! He said ‘you have such a beautiful smile and I’m aware this baby is probably yours, but I would love to spend a bit of time with you - can I take you for coffee right now?’ …. I was a bit stunned and said how very nice but no Thankyou.

Years later, on a beach in Turkey a man stopped me on the beach whilst I was walking with my partner and said ‘ you have such beautiful feet’ 😂😂😂

2 mature and well-dressed ladies conferred with each other before leaning over counter and telling me I had fantastic eyebrows. So, so, so flattered!

A couple once stopped me at work and told me I was very graceful. I am not, I am all sharp elbows and bumping into table corners, but after that comment I swanned about smiling upon all beatifically like a saint.

evtheria · 08/03/2022 18:33

@Notmrsfitz That first one, haha WOW.

RockinHorseShit · 08/03/2022 18:39

Years ago I had a lovely, if a bit bonkers compliment from a very unexpected source early one morning on my way to work in London. I'd had a really hard & late night supporting a devastated friend & was absolutely exhausted & felt like shit? I heard singing coming from the road ahead & up pops Spike Milligan on a bicycle on his way to my local news agents for his morning paper, he slows right down as he passes me & shouts, "good morning pretty lady, your light of goodness is shining from all the way up the road. & off he road

RockinHorseShit · 08/03/2022 18:40

Rode!!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 08/03/2022 18:40

Was talking to a client over the phone, never seen them face to face. She said she was looking forward to coming in to meet me. I asked if she had ever been before. She said yes, and she always remembers a young girl tripping up. She then said this girl had the most strikingly beautiful eyes she had ever seen.
It was me on my first day, 4 years before we spoke. My eyes divide people. They are either beautiful or demonic.

Also, at the age of 30 I got Id'd for a bottle of wine. I was so so happy! I don't have ID, so the cashier asked me to give her a smile. I did smile, she then said 'yes, I can serve you'
I asked her what made the difference, she said 'slight crows feet'
So lovely but taken away so quick Grin

JustFrustrated · 08/03/2022 18:57

@RubyFox

Several opticians have told me my eyes are beautiful on the inside Grin
You stole mine!

My darling optician is obsessed with telling me my eyes are as beautiful inside as out .

And then tells me to wear sunglasses more 😂😂

IrnBruAndTwiglets · 08/03/2022 19:04

I’ve always struggled with body confidence. I was walking along a beach on holiday and a woman walking the other way shouted across the sand that it looked like my dress was made for me and I was beautiful. It was just a basic H&M fit and flare dress, but her comment left me smiling all day and I was walking on air after that. Just a lovely kind hearted woman, she’ll have no idea that I remember that fleeting moment of kindness from a stranger.

Didisquat · 08/03/2022 19:20

I was going through my divorce after finding out my husband had numerous affairs all through our marriage and went to see my friend in Manchester for the day to wallow with my 18 month daughter, she had never been on a train and I was worried she would get bored and play up, as we were getting off a posh old man in a suit said “you are doing a wonderful job, she’s a credit to you” it was such a sad horrible time for me and it really really meant something to me and I will never forget it.

GreyCarpet · 08/03/2022 19:23

My friend recently said to me on a night out, "You know, you're sexy."

She meant that I was confident and self assured and owned my space.

I was actually feeling a bit out of sorts because I was wearing something I don't wear very often and I'm not hugely confident so it was nice to hear.

GreyCarpet · 08/03/2022 19:24

*"you're really sexy"

Not sure if it makes a difference but that's what she actually said Grin

Paleodiet · 08/03/2022 19:28

‘You always look so elegant.’ Said by fellow practitioner of my hobby. At the time I was clad in fleece, unfashionable boots and a waterproof jacket. I never imagine my self anywhere near elegant, even when dressed up to go out. Lovely compliment though.

That’s wonderful ☺️

Years ago a guy I dated told me I had a beautiful smile. I’ve got an unfashionably small mouth and horrid yellowy teeth, so had always been self-conscious about it. Since then though I feel a little bit more confident.

When I was training as a yoga teacher I was giving hands-on adjustments to a course mate and afterwards she said I had a lovely touch that felt as though I genuinely cared and wanted to support people. I treasure that one.

Ginandcrispsarebliss · 08/03/2022 19:42

I was told by the lady taking the excerise class I attend that I look very elegant. She made my morning as I haven't much confidence.

When my DC's were small, we took them to a restaurant for the first time when we were on Holiday. I packed colouring books, pens, pencils, stickers and they all sat very quietly, colouring and sticking into their books. A older couple sitting with friends on a table near us, came over half way through our meal and said it was lovely to see how well behaved our children were and they were sharing nicely together. I didn't want to say, this may be the last time for a while they will act like this together but it gave me a nice warm feeling watching them at the time.

crackofdoom · 08/03/2022 19:44

Recently, from a gentleman friend who is a graphic designer:

"I like you more than I like Helvetica".

Probably one of my favourite compliments ever 😄
