@elephantmarchingin

Hmmm not necessarily a credible source but this just flashed up 'BREAKING: US Under Secretary of State Nuland says Poland's decision to put its Mig-29 fighter jets at disposal of the US was not 'pre-consulted' with Washington'
The Whitehouse needs to start reading this thread. The MIGs have been under discussion for about a week. And honestly, we are not the most informed people on the planet, just nosey.
borntobequiet · 08/03/2022 21:05

Starbucks has said it will pause all business activity in Russia, including shipments and cafe operations.

I’m wondering why it took them that long. They seem to have been shamed by the oil companies, quite a feat.

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 21:06

Here is the text of his speech. He doesn’t explicitly ask for a no-fly zone. The only reference is to “help make our Ukrainian sky safe”.

Interesting shift. I think there is a realisation here that a no fly zone would HURT not help Ukraine at this point.

Mumsnet.
More informed about US and NATO military decisions than the Whitehouse.

Well thats a new accolade.
I know we are often ahead of the likes of the BBC, but thats just fucking ridiculous.

TokyoSushi · 08/03/2022 21:09

We are quite good!

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 21:10

When we starting the MN party to do a Zelensky against corruption?

Wrongkindofovercoat · 08/03/2022 21:10

How much of a reduction would occur if those who could returned to working from home for example?

I mentioned that on another thread, I remember diesel was really cheap during lockdown because demand was very low. I am not suggesting we go back to lockdown, but any way we could reduce demand might have an impact on prices ?

PestorPeston · 08/03/2022 21:12

We might be quite good but we should not be ahead of intelligence agencies. At the end of the day we are just trawling Twitter etc, they pay people to do this job, they are meant to be better.

Ideally yes, but, in reality, I don't see it happening.
But the problem is much much bigger than reducing household consumption.
And it is at global level.
To my mind, most usage would be attributed to production and distribution. Essentially aiming to bankrupt whole industries or business to reduce consumption. Comes back to bite us. As a lot of people work in those businesses.
I suspect a deal with the devil here and there will take place. To keeping the wheels moving.
And at a global level China would be quite keen for other countries to keep trading both ways.
Everything is quite complex and large scale, I don't quite understand it.

Igotjelly · 08/03/2022 21:14

I feel I’ve totally missed something. I can’t see anywhere, other than on here, about Ukraine potentially no longer going for NATO membership?

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 21:16

Coca-cola has pulled out of Russia.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 08/03/2022 21:16

I just hope there is something left to protect by the time they get those planes.

Completely agree that they should be much better than us! Or we're all in the wrong job...

Well quite.

I just feel like bloody Cassandra and wonder what the hell people like Patel actually do all day. I'd love a documentary to find out...

My demands are
"Move No10 Operations to the NW"
"Get them all to have proper regional accents"
"Surrender all photoshopping equipment"

MissConductUS · 08/03/2022 21:23

Nothing terribly surprising here, but a top US intelligence official has just testified before Congress about the situation in Ukraine.

Intel chief: Putin likely to ‘escalate’ in Ukraine, thinks ‘he cannot afford to lose’

The only positive note was that what Putin will be willing to accept as "victory" will likely change as the military losses and economic costs mount.

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 21:24

Michael Kofman @KofmanMichael
This conflict has some similarities to the 1939-1940 Winter war. So do early impressions about the state of the Russian military. After 2014 I spent years cautioning the Russian military was not 12ft tall. The future will be spent explaining how they're not 4ft tall either.

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 21:25

Frank Langfitt @langfittnpr
Poland is sending its old MIG-29s to American base in Germany to then be sent to Ukraine while asking Americans to sell Poland newer, better jets. Curious to see what impact these jets have on control of the air and how Russia reacts to open MIG shell-game.

Weddady @weddady
Should sell them through a shell company in Cyprus just to add insult to injury, maybe at the same banks the oligarchs use.

OneSugar1 · 08/03/2022 21:26

If anyone’s into podcasts I recommend the ‘doomsday’ one with Arthur Snell. Terrible name but his recent ones on Ukraine have actually boosted my optimism a bit.

Dovesofpeace · 08/03/2022 21:26

@GallopingHighRoad

Very moving post.

Some one was just being interviewed on sky saying roughly the Same thing.

Petrol may Go high but we're in a proxy war situation.

We have roof's over our heads etc.

That's this bottom line.

We are in a war but it's a " modern war" at the moment.

That will be painful but there are elderly people navigating broken bits of wood over raveens trying to leave a bombings zone with nothing.

People in wheel chairs, orphans , children with disabilities fleeing their once safe happy place .

We can always improve but we live a life of privalige in the west.

But, when people feel they are already struggling day to day, it's not easy to look beyond a personal struggle and I don't blame them for that.

It could feasibly be disinformation on the part of the WH, which then has plausible deniability.
Ijsbear · 08/03/2022 21:27

@RedToothBrush

When we starting the MN party to do a Zelensky against corruption?
Maybe once he's got the Ukraine freed and rebuilt, he could come here to sweep out the corruption.
Wrongkindofovercoat · 08/03/2022 21:28

"Move No10 Operations to the NW"

Hang on a minute , you've already got Media city, can't we split it with West Yorkshire, they could move between the two areas seamlessly using the world beating train system might actually get upgraded if they had to use it ?
