@Hawkins001 But the ones who have got to Calais mostly have relatives here, that's the stupidity of the situation. They would get in, it's just the government is being bureaucratic and insensitive.

Tigersonvaseline · 06/03/2022 16:33

Sinister.

MissConductUS · 06/03/2022 16:35

@Tigersonvaseline

Miss USA

That air development is interesting.

The US looking how to " backfill", war plane's that Poland might send to Ukraine.

Would that put Poland in Putins firing line??

Just heard extremely defence Man from Ukraine,he said they are "ok" in all areas except the skies.

I don't think that it's much different than say, Germany supplying anti-tank weapons and man-portable antiair missiles.

If Putin attacks Poland in retaliation then he's involved NATO and I think his army has its hands full at the moment.

You mentioned American news sources earlier, NBC in particular. NPR is also very good. They're our equivalent of BBC radio.

"Home Office reveals only "around 50" visas have been granted under the Ukraine Family Scheme as of today.

Well if they're not fruit pickers, they ain't coming in.

Roussette · 06/03/2022 16:36

To be honest without further research, both for and against on the issue of open boarders, I'm not sure what's best, especially with Paris already being a safe haven away from the war

So let's not take any Ukrainians, is that what you're saying? Because Paris is safe?

They have family here and can't even get across from Calais to be with them. It's not 'open borders' FFS

50 visas issued. Poland has taken .1 million (I know they want to stay close to Ukraine), Germany have already registered more than 19,000.

Us... 50

Do we know what the z means on Russia vehicles?

Apparently Russia is again attacking a physics sites with a reactor.

Given that both sides in this conflict operate similar/identical equipment as much as anything it’s probably there to allow Russian Forces to recognize one of their’s when they see it.

They are apparently some minor variations/differences which might be to allow units to identify each other,

DuncinToffee · 06/03/2022 16:36

I understand your perspectives too. To be honest without further research, both for and against on the issue of open boarders, I'm not sure what's best, especially with Paris already being a safe haven away from the war.

But for some people the UK could be a better choice, maybe because they know the language, have been before, like the food etc.
The first safe country is not a law, people have a choice.

5thnonblonde · 06/03/2022 16:39

How is this about immigration?! They’re obviously genuine refugees ffs

ParsleySageRosemary · 06/03/2022 16:40

(I stand corrected, re media)

RedToothBrush · 06/03/2022 16:42

Putin told to Macron that he is ready to meet in the IAEA-Russia-Ukraine format, via videoconference or in a third country, according to the #Kremlin

Re this comment and the other one that said about nuclear reactors in Ukraine.

My suspicion is that its true. Macron and Putin don't just have Ukraine to talk about though.

The UK and France said they were close to a deal on the renewal of the Iran Nuclear Deal on Friday. The Israeli PM flew in to see Putin yesterday and then went on to see Scholz. There was talk of him also going to see Macron after that, but I don't know if he has or not (ive been in wales all day and just catching up).

There was hope that a deal would be reached this week, so the relevance of the IAEA seems more likely to be related to that rather than Ukraines reactors.

Russia will want to sort this I feel but theres no way they won't use it to try and get some leverage first.

My point is that Macron and Putin essentially had business to do this week, regardless of whether the war had started or not.

Tigersonvaseline · 06/03/2022 16:42

True, miss USA.

I'm thinking planes maybe more helpful to Ukraine And may trigger Putin.

They need help to create their own no fly zone.

Tigersonvaseline · 06/03/2022 16:43

Yes red.

Some commentators are aghast that Putin is still part of the Iran talks!

MissConductUS · 06/03/2022 16:44

The letters on the vehicles identify what military district they've come from.

RedToothBrush · 06/03/2022 16:45

Macrons call with Putin is being reported as going the same way as the one with ErdoÄŸan and that he said he was going to take Ukraine one way or another.

Apologies if this has already been posted. Apparently a 'leak' from Russian Intelligence Analyst (unsure if authentic but some interesting points):

Tigersonvaseline · 06/03/2022 16:47

BBC journalist just mentioned the long list of people who have spoken to Putin and tried to offer mediation even Saudi?

Putin must be loving all this attention!
He must be feeling very powerful right now.

Thanks re the Z explanations.

Mydogmylife · 06/03/2022 16:48

@RobynMyEmployer

Whilst invading Ukraine was inexcusable, I do believe that the NATO element has aggravated things. Of course, the Ukraine can do what it wants but my stylist (Russian) was saying to me yesterday that Boris would probably be less than happy if Scotland had allied with Russia and brought Russian military influence to our doorstep. Also that we too aren't hesitant to invade countries we perceive as a military threat.

I don't fully agree with her but she's right about the latter point.

This must be so be one of the most bizarre comparisons I have ever heard!

There is a huge war and mass movement of people (mostly women and children) fleeing that war within our continent. European countries are supporting Ukraine at least partly because we need to push back against Putin. Ukraine is standing up for itself, but that helps all of us too. It isn’t reasonable to say that those nearest the war should shoulder responsibility for those who have been displaced (ie the nearest safe country). At the very least the UK government should be making it easy for those with family already in the UK to get here.

But with have taken back control of our borders and have to have the hostile environment.
TheSillyMastiff · 06/03/2022 16:53

We definitely need to do more for the refugees wanting to get in to the UK. It's absolutely atrocious.

I am meeting my MP in work on Tuesday due to the job I do supporting vulnerable women in the community so I'm going to speak to them then.

That is absolutely brilliant.
RedToothBrush · 06/03/2022 16:55

My thoughts on the state of the Russian army / equipment.

The US / British if they have been good at spying will probably have had a better idea on its fighting ability and training than Putin himself. Simply because they WILL get intel from lower levels than Putin has been no one has told Putin the truth for years.

If this is genuine, very interesting indeed.

Gingerwarthog · 06/03/2022 16:56

@TheSillyMastiff
Could you please let us know how you get on with your MP?

Cismyfatarse · 06/03/2022 16:57

@AppleNo8

This might be a good idea.
I am "going" on a walking tour of Kyiv and a wine tour near Mariopol this week. Both through Air BnB who have waived there charges in Ukraine. You need to book for today / tomorrow to get money to them fast.

I picked at random but focused on single person businesses run by women.

It is not much, but it is a small way to help.
