Over £260 in Home Bargains

I didn't even know that was possible.

Not me, the woman at the front of the queue when I joined. It appeared to be just all random bits rather than furniture or anything else expensive. Her trolley was piled high when she left.

I only went in for the posh tonic water they have for 19 p a bottle and managed to get away with £15 worth of different tonics, unusual crisps, proper Spanish allioli and some shower gels but hats off to her that was another level.

I wonder if she went in for that much 😂

B&M has been around for a very long time, at least 17 years. I think they changed their name slightly though?

There are tonnes of them now!
Home bargains has been around for at least 14-15 years too.

@isthismylifenow

The range is new though.

I'm quite sure it's a good thing I never found either of these shops 😊. I left about 15 years ago so I think we crossed paths....

Although we do have similar issues. My worst is shops that have deals on for eg 5 for 5 pounds. Of course no one needs 5 of the product, but it's such a good deal you buy it anyway. No self control for a 5 deal 🙈

The range is not new. I used to shop in the one in Cardiff in the late 90s. I think it only fairly recently massively expanded and became a national chain.

My friend LOVES home bargains!!!!

She could easily spend £150 a week there she reckons.

MangoLipstick · 05/03/2022 13:10

It is easily done! Ok, maybe not £260 though!

I go to b&m a couple of times a month, usually to get small items like cereal or washing up liquid - I went last week for bin bags and toothpaste, and came back with 4 new mugs, some candles, baking stuff, a salad bowl etc.
I’m talking about trying to save money on one hand, but spending £35 on random things!

The mugs are nice though!

CurryLover56 · 05/03/2022 13:17

staryflight445 The Range started in 1989!

That's some spending 😂

I went to buy a CD once and came home with a new boyfriend 😂

Last week I went to town for exercise books (I homeschool), and came home with a rug and a dog bed. I blame my mum for that though. she's such a bad influence when she comes out with me - mind you she paid for them so who am I to refuse 😂

I'm also really bad with The Works, anyone else? I go in for a writing pad and come into with a set of books some fancy pens and 2 new journals 😂

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/03/2022 13:22

I agree - they’re not actually cheap when this happens every time, are they?

I find doing all my shopping online helps as I don’t get tempted

Home bargains actually started as Home and bargains and is at least 36 years old. I remember one of the very first stores opening in my local shopping Centre and was a tiny little shop with 3 aisles. My mum was all excited as the first so was by my nan's house and she loved it.

I remember as a kid they had boxes of crisps and you could get ten pick and mix packets for something daft 15p. Mum used to get them for our packed lunch.

3luckystars · 05/03/2022 13:36

It’s like the middle aisle in Lidl. Went in for milk, came out with a canoe.

@BookkeeperBobby that really made me laugh about the antihistamines Grin

B&Ms been around for over 40 years. My dad was their accountant when they first opened. It's been taken over a few times since, though. I think!
Gingerkittykat · 05/03/2022 13:39

@abigailsnan

I'm off to a visit to B&M this afternoon they have a 50% sale on I can see my lounge having nice new cushions and blingy stuff later to-day.
What!

I've been staying out of B and M but need a new pair of curtains. I would probably be cheaper going to Harrods though by the time I walk round the whole shop.

moonbedazzled · 05/03/2022 13:42

I remember we'd never seen anything like B&Ms. My mum bought our first chocolate advent calendar from there. We'd never seen the like before. It was so exciting. It only had two aisles but it was crammed full of stuff and looked a bit a scruffy warehouse. It was glorious!

Figmentofimagination · 05/03/2022 13:46

Try having a DH who works there. Nearly every shift I get sent a photo of something with just a "?"

Whattodoniw · 05/03/2022 13:46

@BookkeeperBobby

Stuff just falls in your trolley there, I swear. I once bought so much I had to ring for a taxi to get it home. I only wanted some anti histamines.

This made me laugh 😂

I'm intrigued.. I have never been to a home bargains store.

picklemewalnuts · 05/03/2022 13:48

@BarbaraofSeville tell me about the posh tonic? I'm intrigued...

Roselilly36 · 05/03/2022 13:49

I went to B&M this morning, spent £46, I usually do when I go there, I love a look around, I love Home Bargains too.

This made me chuckle. DD1 works at the Range and she does the same to me!
Porfre · 05/03/2022 13:59

I love going for a stroll on Home bargains.
But its impossible if I've got the kids with me.

I'm usually quite good, but do sometimes buy random crap we don't need, but if I've got the kids with me - they'll both walk out holding junk food and toys.

Squiff70 · 05/03/2022 14:02

Home Bargains actually started life as an online discount retailer - the website was halfpriceorless dot com (doesn't exist any more). My dad made a couple of orders from there - it was very cheap and very exciting! They then opened high street shops as 'Home and Bargain' before changing to the more modern 'Home Bargains'.

BuddhaForMary · 05/03/2022 14:05

I'm a sucker for mugs and kitchen stuff. It's always those aisles that cause the most monetary problems for me 😂

KitKattaktik · 05/03/2022 14:16

Bliss. Love wandering round those shops. DH moves round them like Mo Farah on speed! In, grabs the one thing he went in for and out before I've finished looking at the first shelf! Confused

Solongtoshort · 05/03/2022 14:21

Home bargains opened in 1976, the same year l was born. There was no online shopping then. But you are right about it being Home and Bargains when it first opened a lot of people here in Liverpool still call it this.

Me and you could never be friends then......id be wholeheartedly encouraging you.

It's the kind of stunt I'd pull if I only I didn't have to turn pay my credit card off afterwards!

NeedWineNow · 05/03/2022 14:30

Me and DH went to B&M and Aldi this morning (they're next door to each other). We only went to B&M for logs and kindling, £42 later we came out. Admittedly we got vitamins, some jewellery storage that I needed and a few other bits but still. Lucky we don't go very often.

Lovemusic33 · 05/03/2022 14:35

I popped into home bargains this morning and only spent £20, I’m now wishing I spent more as it seems cat food is half the price of what I pay at pets at home (well not half but a lot cheaper) and they had rose/blueberry/raspberry and blackberry plants for £1.99, wish I had bought more. So I guess if you don’t go often you might want to stock up on certain items that are cheaper than buying elsewhere.
