About the war crimes accusation (which I believe to be true), if it were found to be true Putin would obviously just never leave Russia again so probably wouldn’t face a court or prison. But could it put pressure on other countries not currently using sanctions to do so? And put pressure on those dragging their feet (I include UK in this) so get a move on?

FacebookPhotos · 05/03/2022 01:44

Thanks, Damnloginpopup. That makes perfect sense, and I blame tiredness for not realising it.

BreadInCaptivity · 05/03/2022 01:44

@FacebookPhotos

That imagery of the world's longest POW camp that is not being fed is particularly stark.

Is there no requirement to feed POW? I thought there was tbh, but I’ve no idea why I thought that.

Thanks for the informative info in these threads as well. I’m a person who reduces anxiety by increasing my knowledge so it has really helped this week.

Whilst they are in the column the Russian soldiers are not POW's.

They have not been captured nor have they surrendered.

Rather their needs are not being met by their own military a different matter entirely and not subject to the Geneva Convention.

Of course POWs have to be fed. But these guys are not POWs that's the irony. They have imprisoned themselves by getting stuck.
endlesscraziness · 05/03/2022 02:18

@Fiefofum that's terrifying

This made me sad and shows how fucked up the propaganda machine is. Now they've banned FB, Twitter etc it'll be even more so

Natsku · 05/03/2022 05:10

@Booklover3

I’m thinking that Russia will probably aim to take all of the power plants in Ukraine?
That would make sense, then they could cut off power, and of course spread fear when they attack to take over the plants, to try and push Ukraine into giving in.
Natsku · 05/03/2022 05:16

This was very brave of them, entire staff of a Russian tv channel resigned during a live stream, saying "no war" and then walking out

I think the point is that it's not a pow camp, so no requirement to feed anyone. It's a pseudo pow camp, in that the enemy is kept together and made themselves ineffective and unable to get to where the fighting is. They've imprisoned themselves due to incompetence.

The Guardian online says that the Washington Post will no longer include names of reporters working in Russia in their reports. This is in response to Putin's threats against reporters and to protect staff safety.

Inthesameboatatmo · 05/03/2022 06:21

A scary 24 hours.

Gingerwarthog · 05/03/2022 06:24

Another journalist - Alexey Kovalyov (from Meduza, news website) has left Russia, tweeting that he crossed the border on foot in the middle of the night (to escape).

Gingerwarthog · 05/03/2022 06:36

Also - don't know if this has already been posted - the Sky news team have been evacuated out after being shot by Russian soldiers.

Natsku · 05/03/2022 06:39

Glad they've got out Gingerwarthog

Yes - the Sky team were travelling in a family saloon car at the time.

Morning, checking in. Am I right that it's been relatively quiet overnight and they've left the power plant alone?

I honestly feel like I'm living in some sort of twilight zone, like I can't really believe that this is happening. It's so, so horrific, and I just can't see where it's going to end.

Anyway, might as well get my catastrophising done early. Busy day ahead but this is constantly in my thoughts.

KevinTurvysGravy · 05/03/2022 07:09

Damnloginpopup · 05/03/2022 07:17

I've not seen anything much come through as yet overnight but things generally start up around dawn.

Looks like that. Russian sources saying they have announced two temporary ceasefires and opening of humanitarian corridors in 2 cities including Mariupol.
This has NOT been confirmed by Ukrainian sources.

It's awful isn't it. I wake up every morning dreading to check what's happened

@Justanotherlurker

I don't know why these threads are trying to still relate this current situation to brexit by proxy, Russia has played both sides of the divide for generations, it was known in the 80's that Russian optics on playing the long game on western institutions via left ]and right wing was already happening.

After the election of Trump and the hysteria of Russian collusion Reddit decided to deep dive into some of their subs (with the backing of gov intelligence), it caused a moment of clarity for a millisecond that the subs that had the most russian bots were on the 'left' side of the spectrum that was regularly reaching the front page and was profoundly anti trump/pro clinton etc, it's the same as the UK, in the run up to the Invasion and UK/US lets remember the ex shadow front bench who removed their names from the stop the war list that said this situation was solely down to western/nato aggression (they valued keeping there ministers job well paid job instead of sticking by principles when things got a little awkard), also lets not forget Corybn running a press conference based on 'evidence' of the tories waning to sell of the NHS which was based on a Russian troll. Thats ignoring the subject of Russian interference in support of the SNP

Putin hasn't been emboldened by anything in the UK, it's quite ironic that the most fervent FBPE crowd on here are thinking we are that relevant after the past 5 years spouting how insignificant we are, this is Putin.

The fact that a lot of the ex shadow cabinet had to remove their support on the stop the war statement is why Corbyn is brought up, it's not a case of brushing over one situation and focusing on the other.

Trying to eqaute twitter likes or comments is not a metric to base an assumption on.

I have found a real live but Corbyn on this thread. I am so happy.
SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 05/03/2022 07:27

I spent a stupid amount of time yesterday reading about the ISS and the international co-operation involved. I love seeing it fly over on a clear night or in the early morning. It has always been a symbol of nation working with nation beyond political frontiers.

It’s now a symbol of all that Putin’s regime is putting at risk and fucking up, with petty threats to end the programme, deorbit the craft and other wild scenarios.

Russian space scientists must be sickened.

Roussette · 05/03/2022 07:27

Thanks for the thread.

BBC had Rory Stewart on this morning, he was on the Syrian border. What an informative man he is, and what a loss to the Tory party, it seems anyone with a brain left. I went to a Q&A session with him a few years ago and was very impressed.

This morning he spoke of Putin's mental state (not good) and that he thinks oil and gas sanctions is the only thing that will work. It will cause us and European countries pain in rising bills but it is almost something we have to do to stop this madness. A means to an end.
