Have you got a link for updates about the missiles over the Russian city?

yoolia · 05/03/2022 22:13

His speech specifically said retaliatory measures would affect "British interests in Russia" which didn't sound like a cyber attack to me.

I didn’t see that part @yoolia thanks. Wonder what that means

I’m going to have to take a break now after watching the poor poor parents of the 18 month old baby kissing him and crying after he had passed. No words.

@yoolia

Anyone have any idea what these "proportionately tough" retaliations are likely to be? Cyber attacks?
Possibly.

Russia is thought to have a lot of agents in the UK. A particularly high number - what they might do, I don't know.

Think about this though. If Russia has a significant amount of money frozen in London, you don't want to nuke where your money is. Cos you really won't get it back. You ultimately want it unlocked at some point. Unless you are prepared to right it off - not convinced of this as a strategy

Parliament is due to advance sanctions on individuals on Monday apparently (cos this hasn't happened properly yet). So threats for 'two days' make some sense in that context.

Putin has probably had a bunch of whinging oligarchs and criminals on the phone over it too. Abramovich has gone home for a good whinge hasn't he?

Its possible, that actually, not inacting the personal sanctions immediately might be tactical and have some logic we don't know about behind it (of course it might just be dragging feet)

But yeah, why two days.

It's amplifying the 'londongard' situation that some have been pedalling on on mn, it;s the mistaken sitiuoation of russian inteferrence is only from the 'right'

@Shuuu

I think perhaps a cyber attack is coming, or he will refuse to trade with us. Whatever he does it won’t be a physical attack as he has so far avoided conflict with NATO countries. He can’t declare war against us as he doesn’t want war with NATO. We still rely on Russia for oil so it’s likely he’s securing deals with other countries and then he will cut us off
Possibly so but Russia aren't the only oil rich countries in the world. We sent old William Duke of Cambridge to the UAE on the 10th of February to "strengthen ties" so I imagine there's other plans in the pipe line if Russia cuts us off from oil imports.

Also we always have Rockall and it's shelf, it was the last "territory/land" in 1955 that we ever claimed. And we claimed it and 12nautical miles around it for a reason. A 2017 geological study has revealed the are may well be oil and gas rich.

yoolia · 05/03/2022 22:27

I wish we could ban the word nukes on these threads.

Shuuu · 05/03/2022 22:28

Haven’t we already shut ourselves in the foot sanctioning them?! Doesn’t our country need their money. So essentially we’ve screwed ourselves through Putins eyes. They will all sell up & move onto perhaps Dubai or somewhere else. Don’t forget we have a lot of money from Russian billionaires here so Putin will single us out as they are probably putting pressure on him. We may also look weaker than other NATO members due to us still buying oil he may be trying to intimidate us due to him needing to keep us for the time being

Fivetoomany · 05/03/2022 22:29

This may sound crazy (I read a lot of 'end of the world' type books) but could Putin use a EMP?
This would then start and end ww3 in seconds. We couldn't retaliate. We would lose use of all electronics. Not at all trying to fearmonger. I had a quick Google and can see it has been discussed briefly by some journalists.

Shuuu · 05/03/2022 22:29

@TheSillyMastiff this is why I love mumsnet some of you guys are so knowledgeable

FlosCampi · 05/03/2022 22:33

I guess the " two days to draw up a list" of who has sanctioned Russia, is actually to allow us some time to re-think the sanctions, not because it would actually take two days!

Its the same level as 'the Trafford Centre is going to be attacked' which goes around every single christmas 'cos my neighbour's dog heard it off the local town cryer.'

Seriously, I can think of a bunch of easier things to do.

Like this story tonight in the times

EXCLUSIVE 🚨 w/@harryyorke1

British intelligence withdrew assessment that giving peerage to Evgeny Lebedev posed national security risk after Boris Johnson intervened

PM ignored warning about son of ex KGB spy and oligarch, said it was "anti-Russianism"

Explosive new details on how Lebedev came to be given a peerage are revealed by multiple sources across Government and Whitehall tonight

It concerns what happened after the House of Lords Appointments Commission first rejected the nomination in March 2020.

This decision was based on an assessment by the security services provided to Holac via the Cabinet Office

But rather than drop the issue, PM personally intervened and pushed for it to be unblocked

Former aides objected, but PM pushed on.

What happened then is a subject of contention

But what can be now revealed is that the security services assessment of Lebedev was changed, forcing Holac to drop its objections

Some in Number 10 say they believe a ‘secret deal’ was cut at PM’s behest

Around the same time the PM is also alleged to have got involved in Gov contracts for adverts in newspapers - to ensure Lebedev’s Evening Standard benefitted

He is said to have raised Lebedev specifically with aides, and then later Cab Office official in charge

These claims are supported by sources in No10 at the time

Full story in The Sunday Times tomorrow. Make sure you buy a paper

Our report tallies with extraordinary investigation by @pcaruanagalizia in Tortoise (and reports by @lukeharding1968)

Several sources confirm their reports that intelligence suddenly withdrew their assessment

Now we know why: PM’s direct intervention
www.tortoisemedia.com/audio/lord-of-siberia/

Just a thought, but doing something to create a massive scandal, which might force a PM to resign whilst there is all this going on, might well work to Putin's favour. It would certainly be a show of power and influence...

Chloemol · 05/03/2022 22:34

@wheresmymojo

Does anyone have a link to the Flightradar24 thread?

I can't find it...

Interesting movement of a UKR plane which landed in Poland where there are 2 x US Airforce Black Hawks, it's now taken off again.

Doesn't say where it's going (but obvs not UKR).

Same yesterday, UKR plane at an airport, Italian forces plane came into the same airport, UKR plane no longer traceable

I can only assume it’s aid being passed over

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 05/03/2022 22:34

What is an EMP?

yoolia · 05/03/2022 22:34

could Putin use a EMP

He COULD do anything. I daresay he could engineer the release of lions and crocodiles onto the streets of London if he wanted to, or fly in naked on a hang glider into Buckingham Palace with a kalishnikov.

Is he likely to? No.

Tigersonvaseline · 05/03/2022 22:34

Russians don't only comes here though!!

Italy has been busy seizing stuff And it would be even easier too wash money there!

And France, Switzerland etc...

PestorPeston · 05/03/2022 22:35

@wheresmymojo

Has anyone seen the updates about the two missiles over Russian city Belgorod?

Not clear if it's UKR offensive or a ploy by RU to justify harsher tactics...

Belgorod is suddenly famous for another Russian convoy twitter.com/Caucasuswar/status/1500226921141002241 six hours ago. Plus mystery explosions with seemingly little blast damage twitter.com/WARUKRAINE2022/status/1500230212868530176

Not found a verifiable source for the explosions. More theatre or a feck up or a distraction or a fake or a false flag. We are going to get a lot of these.

wheresmymojo · 05/03/2022 22:36

One link for missiles over Belgorod...

Will find a couple more if there's been any more discussion on it since it happened

yoolia · 05/03/2022 22:37

TBH I suspect he probably sees Boris as a weak link as I expect he has dirt on him.

Releasing such dirt is the most likely "retaliation" IMO. Not poisoning the water supply or collapsing the national grid.

RedToothBrush · 05/03/2022 22:38

Btw, why pull that story NOW? Its not to protect the PM. But I also don't think its because its part of some Russian Plot either.
