Discrimination by Sainsburys?

152 replies

ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/03/2022 18:59

Today I got some Sainsburys vouchers in the post & as usual I can't use them because I haven't gone into supermarkets for the last two years & they're 'for use instore only'.This time I could've saved £45 in total, which is not to be sneezed at. Other vouchers have been similarly tempting - except I only do deliveries now & I can't remember getting any which were valid for deliveries.

Tesco send me vouchers which I can use instore, online or with other retailers.

Heck I was right , this is the new aibu board !

FloBot7 · 04/03/2022 20:50

I haven't read the full thread but well worth getting the Nectar app. I shop in store and don't get any vouchers by post. Instead I get nectar prices on things I buy regularly (eg, Sainsburys butter for £1.25 instead of £1.50, beating Aldi's prices). I also get extra nectar points on frequently purchased items.

SquirrelG · 04/03/2022 20:51

It's not discrimination - it is your choice not to go to the shop. I often see vouchers for various online purchases - is that discrimination for those who don't shop online? They are offering you something with conditions attached - you either accept the conditions or miss out on the offer. Honestly, they can't please everyone, and obviously they are trying to attract people into the shop.

Why don't you just go into the shop to use them? It's not discriminatory sending you in store vouchers only though.

alltheapples · 04/03/2022 20:56

@BIWI

But the OP didn't say that those were her disabilities - she used those as examples. And she hasn't come back to clarify.

I think it would be very difficult for anyone to seriously claim discrimination as these kinds of promotions are very widespread. See my earlier post about Lakeland. I'd imagine that as long as the supermarkets are also offering promotions based on online shopping, then this clears them of any discrimination. And I'm sure that they all do this.

I think it would be easy to prove indirect discrimination. But no one is going to spend the vast amount in court costs required.
SquirrelG · 04/03/2022 20:57

So 1/4 MNers don't think about what's been going on in the world

Seriously? I think there are a lot more grave issues going on in the world than what you think is discrimination by Sainsburys! Maybe the 1/4 of MNers are more concerned about those than about your silly rant.

Autumn42 · 04/03/2022 20:57

Not sure how it’s discrimination? Would it be discrimination too for retailers to not offer any online service?

BIWI · 04/03/2022 20:57

I don't think it would be.

Week 1 - Sainsbury send out vouchers for money off if you shop in store
Week 2 - Sainsbury send out vouchers for money off if you shop online
Week 3 - Sainsbury send out vouchers for money off if you buy their petrol
Week 4 - Sainsbury send out vouchers for money off if you buy from their Tu range
etc, etc.

Pythonesque · 04/03/2022 21:00

I've had quite a lot - nearly any time I shop in store I get one - offering discounts off your first / next online shop.

I've never done an online supermarket shop, so far ...

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/03/2022 21:03

@Ilikewinter

Out of interest OP what did you do before supermarkets starting doing deliveries?
I'd hazard a guess at, seeing as supermarkets have been doing deliveries for around 25 years and the average Mumsnetter is in their 30s, probably doing her spellings and wondering whether there really isn't any party like an S Club Party.
SleepingStandingUp · 04/03/2022 21:10

You could try contacting them @ifIwerenotanandroid and explain you're housebound so oy shop online. You might get nothing but equally they might convert them.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 21:13

the average Mumsnetter is in their 30s

Is that true?

VladmirsPoutine · 04/03/2022 21:14

I would have guessed 40s.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 04/03/2022 21:22

@ifIwerenotanandroid

If I'd known it was this easy to wind up people I'd've done it years ago. Grin

Thanks for turning this into an unintended sociological experiment. So 1/4 MNers don't think about what's been going on in the world; 1/4 make huge assumptions without knowing anything about me or even reading what I wrote; 1/4 just like to insult other people; and 1/4 are rather lovely.

Cheers, m'dears!

AKA, I'm wrong but going to flounce and pretend I don't care.
LidlMiddleLover · 04/03/2022 21:26

Thats like saying it’s discriminatory to send you a coupon off a certain brand because you don’t use that brand. Your choice not to use them.

Bagadverts · 04/03/2022 21:26

An action that would otherwise be unlawful indirect discrimination will not be if there is an objective justification. As legitimate aim can include desire to make a profit. A claimant would have to show that there are not proportionate.

I’d say it’s reasonable for a store to encourage shopping in store to increase profits. Giving online as well as in store discount defeats the purpose. Should every store have to ask customers about themselves and tailor to men/women/different disabilities/age etc? Would make sn online or in store shop much longer.

pawpaws2022 · 04/03/2022 21:28

I get those too, and I don't/can't shop in store at the minute. It's a bit annoying but 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ it is what it is

Nanny0gg · 04/03/2022 21:33

@ifIwerenotanandroid

It's discrimination if e.g. I can't go to a store for health or disability reasons, or say if I need to use public transport but the vouchers require me to spend £80+ & I can't carry that much shopping.

The vouchers are 5 x (£9 off an £80+ shop).

It's annoying that I sometimes get high-spend deliveries from Sainsburys but can't use the vouchers.

Boots do exactly the same.

It's one of those things. It's an offer. No-one has to take it up

SpicePumpkin · 04/03/2022 21:35

You are ridiculous.

Gilly12345 · 04/03/2022 21:40

It’s not discrimination, stop feeling so hard done by.

Aquafizzle · 04/03/2022 23:47

Why don't you sue them and see if a judge agrees with you?

alltheapples · 04/03/2022 23:52

It is indirect discrimination. But the court costs would be very high and not worth it for some vouchers.

Notthatbad · 04/03/2022 23:57

Are you for real?! Wow!! That is all...

RampantIvy · 04/03/2022 23:59

@user1745

Or perhaps a better example would be a person with a peanut allergy getting an offer on peanuts. It doesn't benefit them but it doesn't penalise them either, so no harm done. Just one of those things.
I get money off petrol vouchers from our local Tesco, but the nearest Teco with a petrol station is a 16 mile round trip.
