Discrimination by Sainsburys?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/03/2022 18:59

Today I got some Sainsburys vouchers in the post & as usual I can't use them because I haven't gone into supermarkets for the last two years & they're 'for use instore only'.This time I could've saved £45 in total, which is not to be sneezed at. Other vouchers have been similarly tempting - except I only do deliveries now & I can't remember getting any which were valid for deliveries.

Tesco send me vouchers which I can use instore, online or with other retailers.

I didn't realise so many peple would get so worked up about this. Yes, it's discrimination. No, it may not be discrimination under the terms of the Equality Act.

Are you saying you can't go to the store because of health and disability reasons, or you can't use public transport because of the amount of shopping?
But you expect Sainsburys to know this?

It sounds like a phone call to Customer Services might be helpful.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:16

I cannot fathom how it's discrimination.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 04/03/2022 19:16

This isn't discrimination. Stop misusing the term.

VladmirsPoutine · 04/03/2022 19:17

The thing is if we start co-opting disability rights language to have a moan about shopping in Sainsbury's then it's pretty much game over. Having thought about this a bit more my local café has a meal deal for under 10s which is about a third of the normal price, I'm wondering if I could instruct a lawyer - I too deserve to have an orange juice and a croissant at a discounted rate!!!

Talliah · 04/03/2022 19:19

The large minimum spend means it’s discrimination against the poor and another example of how it’s easier to save money if you’re well off already.

Ilikewinter · 04/03/2022 19:19

Out of interest OP what did you do before supermarkets starting doing deliveries?

This is a wind up right OP!

Discrimination, but not discrimination under the very Act designed to ensure there is no discrimination.

I'm afraid your need to use public transport isnt a protected characteristic.

Discrimination indeed 🤣🤣🤣

Then under what terms do you think it’s discrimination?

There’s a voucher for a discount on a retailer I like but it’s only for coats. I don’t want a coat. Am I being discriminated against?

So it's not discrimination then. You could go to store and use them, however you choose not to. that's your choice.
Shakirasma · 04/03/2022 19:21

By misusing the word discrimination in this way, you are minimising what discrimination really is and the real pain and distress that victims who suffer from it feel. Stop it.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:22

You can't expect Sainsburys HQ to know everyone's individual circumstances right down to their travel arrangements and finances before issuing some money off vouchers. Confused

I know if you scan your loyalty card they get certain info about you but it's not that clever.

ChiselandBits · 04/03/2022 19:22

It might, at a push be described as unfair. But not discrimination. Not everything can be aimed at everyone. I really want to shop in Waitrose - should they make it cheaper so I can afford to?

VladmirsPoutine · 04/03/2022 19:23

Come to think of it aren't carpet fitters discriminating against those of us with wooden floor boards?

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:24

Absolutely. Especially if you wanted to buy trousers. Sad

I get the free coffee and cake vouchers for John Lewis but I don't live near one so I am being discriminated against too.

Yes, I normally spend less than £50 a week, £30-35 in one shop. Also discriminates against smaller families.
Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:27

How is Sainsburys supposed to know the size of your family?

Aren't you the one who's most worked up?
ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/03/2022 19:27

If I'd known it was this easy to wind up people I'd've done it years ago. Grin

Thanks for turning this into an unintended sociological experiment. So 1/4 MNers don't think about what's been going on in the world; 1/4 make huge assumptions without knowing anything about me or even reading what I wrote; 1/4 just like to insult other people; and 1/4 are rather lovely.

Cheers, m'dears!

I’m not ‘worked up’. I’m not the one claiming that some money off vouchers are discrimination.

It would be had they said:
Only for use by men/white people/straight people.
Not, in store use only.

It could be much more easily argued that online use only discriminates against poor or elderly people.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:30

Confused

It seems you were the one getting wound up by the 'discriminating' vouchers.

PizzaCrust · 04/03/2022 19:31

Are you always this entitled or…?

Svara · 04/03/2022 19:31

@Sparklingbrook

How is Sainsburys supposed to know the size of your family?
I wasn't being serious. I meant if it's discrimination to offer in store only vouchers then it's discrimination to offer vouchers for large spends only as well.
Smokeahontas · 04/03/2022 19:32

I don’t think anyones getting worked up. It’s just not discrimination.

WonderfulYou · 04/03/2022 19:33

It’s not discrimination.

I get sent vouchers all of the time saying I have money off if I spend over X amount.

I never spend over X amount for various reasons but I don’t call it discrimination.

It’s to encourage you to spend more money.

You sound like you have too much time on your hands.
