Discrimination by Sainsburys?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/03/2022 18:59

Today I got some Sainsburys vouchers in the post & as usual I can't use them because I haven't gone into supermarkets for the last two years & they're 'for use instore only'.This time I could've saved £45 in total, which is not to be sneezed at. Other vouchers have been similarly tempting - except I only do deliveries now & I can't remember getting any which were valid for deliveries.

Tesco send me vouchers which I can use instore, online or with other retailers.

I didn't realise so many peple would get so worked up about this. Yes, it's discrimination. No, it may not be discrimination under the terms of the Equality Act.
What protected characteristic do you have that is leading to this discrimination then?
girlmom21 · 04/03/2022 19:34

I don't think it's discrimination. They want people shopping in store. If everyone starts shopping online stores will need to close.
If everyone shops online they need more drivers.

Redundancies and recruitment costs a whole lot more than some vouchers that reduce their profit margins slightly.

It's business.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/03/2022 19:36

@Talliah

The large minimum spend means it’s discrimination against the poor and another example of how it’s easier to save money if you’re well off already.
That still doesn't make it discrimination, lol.

You can argue it's a bit unfair, but Sainsbury's doesn't have to give anyone money off anything in the first place.

Sparklingbrook · 04/03/2022 19:36

I meant if it's discrimination to offer in store only vouchers then it's discrimination to offer vouchers for large spends only as well

But the OP said they do high spend-

It's annoying that I sometimes get high-spend deliveries from Sainsburys but can't use the vouchers.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2022 19:36

This.

BlackberrySky · 04/03/2022 19:37

Annoying for you, but not discrimination, it's targeted marketing that is not relevant for you. I sometimes get vouchers for dairy products but don't eat dairy. This is much the same. Still, it's worth asking them if they can be exchanged for online ones.

Georgeskitchen · 04/03/2022 19:38

Is there a reason you can't shop instore?do you have e a friend/partner/family member who could shop for you?

Talking in general, not just about the OP. If in store only is discrimination against the OP then the minimum spend is discrimination against people who spend less for whatever reason such as income or family size. I wasn't being serious anyway!
Madwife123 · 04/03/2022 19:42

OP - I’m being discriminated against

Whole of mumsnet - This isn’t discrimination

OP - I don’t care what you all say it’s discrimination

Why bother posting?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/03/2022 19:43

Can you not get someone else do do a shop for you, if you really can’t go yourself?

hauntedbillybass · 04/03/2022 19:44

If I'd known it was this easy to wind up people I'd've done it years ago.

Is your name Colin Robinson?

If you don't normally spend £80 on shopping and have to increase your spend to reach the limit then how much would you actually be saving ?

Thanks for turning this into an unintended sociological experiment. So 1/4 MNers don't think about what's been going on in the world; 1/4 make huge assumptions without knowing anything about me or even reading what I wrote; 1/4 just like to insult other people; and 1/4 are rather lovely.

Cheers, m'dears!

Just well you didn't put this on aibu, it really would be a case of arse handed on a plate, it's ruthless over there. Grin

While I don't agree this is discrimination, you can surely buy a bit more of the long life products you'd use eventually anyway? I've done that many times to use vouchers - I stock up on tins, cereal, nappies, pasta, etc to get to the voucher point. Then my subsequent shops are cheaper.
Hoppinggreen · 04/03/2022 19:49

Sainsburys delivered an online shop next door this morning but didn’t deliver one to me
Of course I hadn’t actually ordered one but it’s still discrimination!!

Bagadverts · 04/03/2022 19:50

Not discrimination. Just switch to Tesco if I you want offers online.

It's 'not fair' but that certainly doesn't make it discrimination. They don't have to offer discounts to anyone.

Nope.

You posted something plainly silly untrue. So you had your arse handed to you.

Don't try the whole backtracking 'it was an experiment' ploy Hmm

tkwal · 04/03/2022 19:54

That's a good point I suppose
I was thinking shops usually tempt you in store so they can benefit from impulse purchases
That's why I do my big shops online and any extras needed in between times come from Lidl

Nope, not funny or clever...
mam0918 · 04/03/2022 19:55

It's discrimination, it is a valid marketing tool called an 'instore promotion'.

If you are in a wheelchair and they don't have wheelchair access and refuse to allow you to use it from outside the store in any way then yes but other than that no it's not discrimination.

It's your choice not to physically go in if they have provided access.
+
It's your issue you live too far away and don't drive/can't get a lift/won't use a taxi.

It's not their fault you travel via bus and sometimes your lifestyle (of how you choose to travel, where you live, how you shop) means you arent eligible but it's in no way due to disability.

My mam is heavily disabled and uses them fine and I have non-disabled friends who live nowhere near Sainsbury's and cant drive who would find them no use - zero to do with ability.

100problems · 04/03/2022 19:55

I was discriminated by Sainsbury's just last week. Bastards decided the wine I wanted just wasn't U enough so they sent 6 more expensive ones.

Then gave me a £16 sub voucher to ease my poverty.

I'm still mildly pissed resentful.

  • Its not discrimination (no idea where 'not' went)
Lifeismeh · 04/03/2022 19:58

Ahh yes, I remember when I got a voucher for discount on a Charlie Bighams meatball bake. Only my local don’t actually sell them so I shouted discrimination because that’s unfair that I can’t ACTUALLY use the voucher.

A grip for you OP…
