Unbelievable. Thread 6 is almost full, to be found here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4495271-The-Invasion-is-ongoing-Part-6?pg=1

Still a fascinating and thoughtful set of documentation of our evolving thoughts, fears, questions, analyses and updates. And still a credit to the eyes, ears and knowledge of those on here.

Pinched from one poster on thread 6 whose name I can't recall:

Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

*German government, I should specify

toastfiend · 04/03/2022 07:15

@Feelingthepinch22 I believe they're predicting/intelligence suggests that martial law will be imposed in Russia after the meeting of the Russian Federation Council later today. It makes complete sense that they'd be advising their citizens to leave before that happens.

Worth a read. What it's like to live in Belarus under an oppressive regime and how ordinary Belarusians are trying to help Ukraine.
90% of Belarusians are against this war but are being bullied and shown hate.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/03/2022 07:18

How easy is it to impose martial law in Russia with 90% of Russian Army focussed on the Ukraine?

Things are just going from bad to worse :-(.

Roussette · 04/03/2022 07:18

they russian troops have taken control of the nuclear plant

Where is that being said? Have you got proof of that?

Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 07:19

Putin is a dictator and he has seized Belarus with puppets.

I don't want the usual suspects jumping on my next comment, but is Liz Truss out of her depth?

Blinken held a really good presser the other day, eloquent, reassuring, but the glimpses I've had of Liz Truss She seems leaden,clunky...?

PermanentTemporary · 04/03/2022 07:21

Joining again.
Re the men being refused permission to leave - not sophisticated thoughts from me but - there are times when men are oppressed for their biology, and war is one of them in that men's physical strength is exploited. A feminist analysis, ironically, should teach us that, along with noting rape as a weapon of war. Apologies if this is ludicrously simplistic.

quiteathome · 04/03/2022 07:22

I would say. Yes Liz Truss is out of her depth.

Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 07:23

She's in Brussels to meet blinken today.

Just wondering how that Will go Confused

PermanentTemporary · 04/03/2022 07:23

I would say one of the only positives I see in this is that Liz Truss's leadership ambitions should be dead in the water.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/03/2022 07:24

@Roussette
i either heard it on the radio or read it on twitter

ChimChimeny · 04/03/2022 07:24

@BigHuff

France, Poland and the US have told their citizens to leave Russia immediately. Anyone else?
I think the UK have too.

@Feelingthepinch22 there's been rumours of conscription even with foreigners/tourists and martial law so It just isn't a place you want to get stuck

katem98 · 04/03/2022 07:24

@Roussette It's Breaking on BBC news website.

Not sure what you mean by usual suspects but the thought crossed my mind

I don’t know much about her but I always feel more reassured when Ben Wallace speaks, not his role I guess to go though

timetochangeusername · 04/03/2022 07:30

@MarshaBradyo agree about Ben Wallace. He was good on Afghanistan as well.

ChimChimeny · 04/03/2022 07:31

It looks like only 1 reactor is actually working (sounds like 4 of the others have been deliberately shut down rather than damaged) so power supply will be limited

How far and wide would the impact go if this was to blow?
Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 07:31

Marsha I mean, the posters that even if Liz Truss was the most incredible, diplomatic, incredible politician we have ever had they would still hate her "purely because she's a Tory". Ie worthless comments!!

I guess just because she seems clunky doesn't mean she's not a good politician but her performance say along side blinken was shocking!!

Tigersonvaseline · 04/03/2022 07:32

The special thing's need to shut down the inner part have been closed so don't worry over nuclear plant (presently)

The Russians have a very big internal security machine involving multiple agencies…not sure of the exact numbers but for example their National Guard is well over 100,000.

FacebookPhotos · 04/03/2022 07:33

Where is that being said? Have you got proof of that?

It is being reported on bbc news.

Even if you shut it down, it does not decrease the danger significantly.

Shutting down does. I think you mean that the initial “scram” doesn’t stop the danger, which is true (though I’d argue is massively reduces the risk). Because after that happens you still need to keep cooling for a while (a few days) before full shut down is achieved. The danger of fire is that in the wrong place it risks knocking out the cooling system (and causing another Fukushima), but there are redundancies upon redundancies in modern plants and during design / operation the safety people will consider and mitigate the risk of both fires and armed attack.

Roussette · 04/03/2022 07:36

MrsLargeEbodied

I'm listening to Sky and BBC and am on Twitter and haven't seen anything on that.

Yes an attack, yes a fire, but not taken over by Russian troops

Roussette · 04/03/2022 07:37

OK, thanks for the link. Watching closely. Strange it's not being reported on Breakfast news
