Movement to get Russian Products taken off the shelves of supermarkets

There was a heartbreaking call to LBC yesterday from a Ukrainian and one of the things they said that the British public can do to help is put pressure on supermarkets in the UK to remove Russian products off of their shelves. Supermarkets in other countries in the EU are currently doing this. I have made contact with some supermarkets already but please if you are able to also do the same either by Twitter or phone as the more people that put pressure on this will help. It’s only a drop in the ocean but any small acts of help go along way.

Beyond caviar and vodka what else in the supermarket comes from Russia?

poshme · 03/03/2022 14:08

I have mixed feelings about this.

I have a friend who is married to a Russian man. He left Russia in 2001 to get away from Putin. He is horrified by what Russia are doing.
He likes to eat some Russian foods- should he be prevented from doing so?

Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 14:10

@poshme I appreciate your point. However, there is other food available and he isn't going to starve.

Disagree.

This can turn very easily into hating all Russians.

This isn't Russia's war. This is Putin's.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 03/03/2022 14:13

I wouldn't have thought there were many Russian products in the supermarkets anyway 🤔

moonbedazzled · 03/03/2022 14:13

We do have a lot of different foods in the UK. I'm sure he could find something to tide him over.

I agree!

We're being told what to think by the media. Provided with obvious "heroes" and "villains"

Time we started fucking thinking instead of blindly taking part in all this manufactured hate.

SickAndTiredAgain · 03/03/2022 14:17

Isn’t Russia one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat? Are we getting rid of a large chunk of bread and flour and pasta and cake etc? Or do you just mean things actually made in Russia (as opposed to with Russian ingredients).

Either way I think it’s a bad idea.

Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 14:17

Alcohol is big product offering but there are other items. All supermarkets will have a full manufacturer list so will have the information.

CayrolBaaaskin · 03/03/2022 14:17

I don’t agree with this. Russian foods may be made elsewhere so it’s not even like it’s a boycott of Russian companies (eg to try to put pressure on Putin by turning the Russian people against him). It seems just a bit like the attacks on kosher food you sometimes get when people want to boycott Israel. I support Ukraine but attacking all Russian culture isn’t the way to help imo.

Ncwinc · 03/03/2022 14:18

I don’t think food sales are high enough to have much impact. Vodka, maybe.

If you have a private pension, a work pension or an investment account you can contact them to ask what they’re doing to divest themselves of Russian investments.

nearlyspringyay · 03/03/2022 14:19

Virtue signalling won't help anything. Donate to the registered charities.

I don't think I've even seen a Russian product in the supermarket. the only thing I can think of is vodka, Smirnoff is owned by Diageo, Stoli is manufactured in Latvia and they have announced their disassociation from Russia.

XenoBitch · 03/03/2022 14:20

This is going too far now.

A lot of my favourite sellers on Etsy are in Russia. Should I be boycotting them too?

Porridgeislife · 03/03/2022 14:20

It’s worth also finding out what high street businesses are Russian owned. Holland & Barrett is majority owned by a Russian ogliarch via his private equity firm so it’s newly off my list.

AuntMasha · 03/03/2022 14:21

I don’t want to punish ordinary Russian citizens and business owners for this.

Marmelace · 03/03/2022 14:22

What's next, internment for any Russians or anyone with Russian heritage. Bloody idiotic and dangerous.

nearlyspringyay · 03/03/2022 14:24

Not any more
Billandben444 · 03/03/2022 14:24

Just stop buying the products - the supermarkets will soon stop ordering more if enough people boycott them and the shelves stay full. If the level of sales stay the same then people don't feel as strongly about this as you do.

Suzi888 · 03/03/2022 14:24

So throw away perfectly good food when there are starving people in the world. What lunacy did I just read.

Porridgeislife · 03/03/2022 14:26

He stepped down from the board, but still owns 50% of his private equity firm.

Yes let’s make people unemployed too- brilliant idea. FFS I’ve read some shit on here but have one of these - Biscuit I think it’s my first.
sashagabadon · 03/03/2022 14:26

Disagree too. It is not the Russian people's fault.

Like others said, it's a foolish path to go down and doesn't lead anywhere good.

Individuals can of course choose not to buy Russian produce. I try and buy British whenever I can for example but that is a choice for individuals.

Madmog · 03/03/2022 14:27

Many Russian citizens are innocent and don't want a war either and we have to remember that.

However, if someone doesn't want to use Russian ingredients, parts or products, then look it's worth looking into what exactly comes from Russia and avoid buying it..

Porridgeislife · 03/03/2022 14:30

@Suzi888 Yes, let’s support all sorts of businesses that are funded by dirty money or unethical practices ‘cause otherwise some people might become unemployed.

You might have to for a while. Depending on what Etsy, postal services, customs etc do.

I have stopped using a couple of Russian suppliers because we aren't sure what will happen to the goods or money at the moment. That has been a quick conversation and an agreed timescale to check back with each other on updates. They won't lose my custom in the long term but in the short term non of us will lose anything to beaurocracy.
