Movement to get Russian Products taken off the shelves of supermarkets

There was a heartbreaking call to LBC yesterday from a Ukrainian and one of the things they said that the British public can do to help is put pressure on supermarkets in the UK to remove Russian products off of their shelves. Supermarkets in other countries in the EU are currently doing this. I have made contact with some supermarkets already but please if you are able to also do the same either by Twitter or phone as the more people that put pressure on this will help. It’s only a drop in the ocean but any small acts of help go along way.

Co-op removing Russian products so this will get traction. Everyone has their right to an option and I agree with the campaign.

@JustFrustrated

Disagree.

This can turn very easily into hating all Russians.

This isn't Russia's war. This is Putin's.

I also agree - I've posted on the invasion thread that I think things are going too far.
CallyfromBlakes7 · 03/03/2022 16:59

@balalake

I'd sooner see all estate agents refuse to sell or market any property owned by Russians.
Indeed - and we'd see house prices drop. I read yesterday that they are 20% higher than 2 years ago.
TellMeMoreHellebore · 03/03/2022 17:20

We aren't 'banning' Russian goods, just ceasing to trade with them

We are just 'shopping' with them, like many here to if they dont agree with Tesco/boots/next actions, we just choose to shop elsewhere

Do you want to be giving putin your money?

AuntMasha · 03/03/2022 17:24

It’s just that I’m very aware of the way human beings never learn from history. Germany was humiliated by the Treaty of Versailles post WWI — it helped to prepare the ground for the rise of Hitler and Naziism. I’m not certain that making all Russia into a Pariah will help win the hearts and minds of the Russian people.

ClemFandangoo · 03/03/2022 17:36

@Porridgeislife

It’s worth also finding out what high street businesses are Russian owned. Holland & Barrett is majority owned by a Russian ogliarch via his private equity firm so it’s newly off my list.
Thanks for this, I want to boycott anything run by Russian Oligarchs or supporters of Putins regime so will be boycotting them too.

I don’t want to punish any hardworking Russians who have nothing to do with this however so will be still buying from local Etsy sellers for example.

Smirnoff isn’t Russian either it’s made in the U.S.

mudgetastic · 03/03/2022 17:40

The need is to make putin unpopular in his own country by ensuring that the people who put him in power feel the consequences of his actions

We need to learn from history which means once this is over we should not humiliate Russia

But neither should we avoid doing anything , unless you are happy for Europe to gradually become a Russian state

Yes the Russian people will get hurt , not as much as the Ukrainians

Wbeezer · 03/03/2022 17:46

Smirnoff is made in Kirkcaldy in Fife, Diageo has a big White spirits division ther, so no need to boycott it.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 03/03/2022 17:48

@TellMeMoreHellebore

What you all going to do if it transpires an ogliarch has a finger in Tescos/Waitrose pie?
Unlikely for Waitrose, as it's a workers co-operative.

The Co-op, unsurprisingly is a co-operative as well.

The more awkward question is 'do you know what your pension is invested in?'

BiscuitLover3678 · 03/03/2022 17:48

I really feel for all the Russian people who are suffering due to Putin’s actions. However I actually think this is better then giving all those poor Moscow hotels 1 star reviews. It’s another form of sanctions which’ll piss Putin off (hopefully).

Ahh sorry I saw on Twitter people were saying it was made in Illinois or something like that.

I found this:

Stolichnaya vodka, for example, is made in Latvia. The parent company, SPI Group, is owned by Yuri Shefler, a Russian born businessman who left Russia and moved to the United Kingdom as a result of a dispute with the Kremlin.

So one not to boycott

Lennybenny · 03/03/2022 18:24

NO. Just no. Fgs. yet another utterly pointless thread.

Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 18:39

@Lennybenny don't read and don't bother commenting then. Hmm

I feel sorry for Russians who oppose this war but are being punished by the action of a few people.

yet...here you are...hmm
raspberryjamchicken · 03/03/2022 18:57

I'm surprised this action is considered unpopular by so many. Boycotting products from South Africa was widely used to show condemnation of apartheid.

All actions, including sanctions, are unfair on your average Russian person but putting economic pressure on Russia is pretty much the only contribution Western countries are able to make to help stop the conflict in Ukraine. A country on economic turmoil cannot afford a war.

FalloutShelter · 03/03/2022 19:24

I really hate the Russophobia going on. We did this to settled German people and businesses in WW1 and 2. People booted GSDs in the street and spat at German people and wrecked their businesses. People who were their valued neighbours in the weeks beforehand.

Polyanthus2 · 03/03/2022 19:48

Putin needs to go - the Russian people need to make him go. Making life hard for them should encourage that. Obviously it's not going to be easy to get him out with imprisonment for protest marchers etc but do we just sit back and hope he doesn't press the button for a nuclear strike in the near future - or do we do anything and everything we can to avoid it.

Wbeezer · 03/03/2022 19:51

@Clemfandangoo I suspect the Smirnoff they drink in the US is made in Illinois but ours is made here (think of the duty on imported alcohol).

dont know where you live where you are seeing this 'russophobia' but here and in my workplace i'm only seeing compassion for the people and plenty are saying how its not the russian peoples fault, they dont want a war, everyone seems to recognise that
Ieatmarmite · 03/03/2022 20:18

If I want to boycott Russian products I can, I don't need virtue signalling from supermarkets to tell me what I can & cannot buy.

FalloutShelter · 03/03/2022 21:02

@TellMeMoreHellebore

Boycotting Russian products
Preventing Russian athletes from competing
Prohibiting Russian singers at Eurovision
Russian people even feeling that they have to apologise for being Russian
Russian people feeling scared at how they are being perceived. They've only recently begun to emerge from a century of Russia = communists and spies. Now this.

Scianel · 03/03/2022 21:59

Yes, it is Putin’s war but the Russian people need to turn against him and it needs to happen very soon

I guarantee you that Russians will be pushed into uniting behind Putin instead if they feel personally shunned.

Didn't take the xenophobia long to rear it's depressing head.

WingingItSince1973 · 03/03/2022 22:55

@Ncwinc

The nuclear weapons he was waving about are Russian. The soldiers he’s invading Ukraine with are Russian. The bombs falling on apartment blocks are Russian.

You can’t wash your hands of it and pretend it’s just one man. It’s 140million people saying ‘it’s nothing to do with me’. It’s oligarchs propping him up financially. It’s the military carrying out his orders.

I wasn't going to bite but I have to. Do you realise that many of the Russian citizens are living in abject fear of the regime that Putin and his henchmen force others to practice. I know of elderly women being taken to penal colonies because they won't convert to the Russian Orthodox religion. Despite their own religion being absolutely know threat to Russia whatsoever. Families are having their homes raided at gun point to make sure they aren't practising the religion they oppose. Anyone that dares to do anything other than what they are ordered to are arrested and then put on trial which usually leads to prison sentence. Russian people are really suffering and unless they have been totally brainwashed to conform they live in fear.
