Movement to get Russian Products taken off the shelves of supermarkets

Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 14:02

There was a heartbreaking call to LBC yesterday from a Ukrainian and one of the things they said that the British public can do to help is put pressure on supermarkets in the UK to remove Russian products off of their shelves. Supermarkets in other countries in the EU are currently doing this. I have made contact with some supermarkets already but please if you are able to also do the same either by Twitter or phone as the more people that put pressure on this will help. It’s only a drop in the ocean but any small acts of help go along way.

Such a pathetic knee jerk reaction. I know we're all feeling powerless to know what to do to help, but this is just ridiculous. It won't change anything. Do you honestly think Putin will say "wow - Sainsbury's has stopped stocking Russian vodka. Time to pull out of Ukraine"? Please...

StandByYourTesselators · 03/03/2022 14:35

Pitchforks for the hard of thinking.

Marmelace · 03/03/2022 14:37
@Suzi888 Yes, let’s support all sorts of businesses that are funded by dirty money or unethical practices ‘cause otherwise some people might become unemployed.
Instead let's turn in to reactionary idiots with pitchforks, are you are net curtain twitcher by any chance.

Marmelace · 03/03/2022 14:38

@SamphiretheStickerist that's totally understandable.

Hedgecog · 03/03/2022 14:38

What the fuck, this has whiffs of 2020 when people went too far with covid. What will this actually achieve? Why do some people think it's okay to punish all Russians because of the actions of one?

Armchair warriors, with nowt better to do
AmbushedByCake1 · 03/03/2022 14:41

I don't have a problem with this.

Embargoes are a fairly standard way of applying pressure on regimes. Like during apartheid with the trade embargo with South Africa.

moonbedazzled · 03/03/2022 14:41

I don't know if I agree with the idea but to be fair, the aim isn't to hit Putin directly. It's to make life miserable so that the Russians will pressurise Putin. The question would be, is that possible in a non-democratic country?

Suzi888 · 03/03/2022 14:41

I don’t think that’s what I inferred @Porridgeislife.

I don’t think the Russian Oligarchs are washing their cash in H&BHmm though. Your unlikely to be aware of where exactly they do it.

Russian beverages are already being pulled, massive businesses Land Rover, BP etc have cut ties with Russia. But by all means stop buying your vitamin E from H&B will really damage Putin. Confused You go girl.

Remember most Russians disagree with this war, some them live here.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 03/03/2022 14:42

Getting rid of Russian food in a supermarket does what exactly? Does it send a message straight to Putin that will worry him because Tesco in Newbury has stopped selling Russian sweets, soup and tinned pate, or does it say to Russians living in the UK that they're not welcome?

It's maybe a shelf or bay depending on where you are. This is pure virtue signalling, and it will turn into xenophobia and hatred of Russians living in other countries, especially because of how Xenophobic the UK is already.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 03/03/2022 14:42

80% of sunflower oil comes from Russia. This type of ban is on the governments consideration list. But will drive prices up.

Marmelace · 03/03/2022 14:44

By all means stop importing goods, but ridiculous to contemplate clearing shelves of what is already here.

AmbushedByCake1 · 03/03/2022 14:44

I'm confused by mumsnet sometimes.

I've seen thread after thread this last week when anyone suggests ways to support Ukraine it's just met with derision and belittlement.

I would say as Russians are not being informed of what their cruel army are doing anything we can do to get a message across that things in their country need to change is a good thing.

Well people with any sense will meet the nonsensical in a way that is deserved. You can't blame them for your confused brain.
toomuchlaundry · 03/03/2022 14:48

Haven't they said we might struggle with some goods because of the fact a lot of our grain comes from Russia, either with cost or supply

Westfacing · 03/03/2022 14:49

It's getting silly this hatred of all things Russian - ninety nine percent of Russians are not Putin or oligarchs!

At least Muslims are getting a bit of respite from being the bogeyman.

Reminds me of 'Freedom Fries' after 911.

What about the absolutely mega tons of Chinese products that are imported every day

nannyPlane · 03/03/2022 14:49

I don't like the sound of this at all. It sounds hateful a bit like burning books. No thank you. I quite fancy a Borscht now. I say this with 100% of Ukraine and 100% against Putin but Putin does not Russia. I hate all form of bigotry and cancelling Russian food is bigoted.

MrsSkrebensky · 03/03/2022 14:50

As PPs have said, there is very little specifically 'Russian' in the shops but bear in mind that Russia is the world's biggest exporter of wheat so how do you know which products that affects? Also, are you willing to go cold next winter or only eat organic to avoid the potential use of Russian gas (Russian cats have been banned but not Russian gas unsurprisingly) in fertilisers etc.
I hate this being told what to be outraged by and all the hypocrisy involved. The two countries have been in a civil war since 2014 but you wouldn't know that from the media.
Btw I am not Russian - I was just a fan of Paul McGann in The Rainbow back in the day.

How does this support Ukraine?

Supporting the Ukraine means practical help, like donations of clothing, bedding, toiletries, financial help if you can. It means supporting Ukrainian business here, supporting Ukrainian charities. The red Cross, and other organisations that help on the ground.

Stuff like this is petty, it doesn't help the Ukraine in any way, shape or form. It's just virtue signalling so people can say they did their bit, without actually doing anything.

nannyPlane · 03/03/2022 14:50

100% of love and support for Ukraine

Yes. Let’s make it worse and then we can moan about people panic buying.

I’m out- ridiculous thread.

@AmbushedByCake1 donate to Red Cross they’re pleading for donations.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/03/2022 14:50

Have a look at where the “Russian” goods in both mainstream uk and specialist shops come from. You’ll find a lot is produced in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland etc. My husband is Russian. The only products I can think of that he buys which are actually made in Russia are soviet-era sweets. Which Ukraine may want to consider commandeering in order to jam Russian tanks’ tracks but which otherwise aren’t a big-ticket item.

Woofwoofbarkbark · 03/03/2022 14:51

I feel for all the Russian people who are agasint this war and are also being plunged into poverty.

Bloody awful all round.

TheScenicWay · 03/03/2022 14:52

Thank goodness some sensible people have come along.
I’m fed up of all the black and white thinking. Most issues are very grey and knee jerk virtue signalling isn’t going to solve anything except creating more anger and division.
