Movement to get Russian Products taken off the shelves of supermarkets

Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 14:02

There was a heartbreaking call to LBC yesterday from a Ukrainian and one of the things they said that the British public can do to help is put pressure on supermarkets in the UK to remove Russian products off of their shelves. Supermarkets in other countries in the EU are currently doing this. I have made contact with some supermarkets already but please if you are able to also do the same either by Twitter or phone as the more people that put pressure on this will help. It’s only a drop in the ocean but any small acts of help go along way.

@Woofwoofbarkbark

I feel for all the Russian people who are agasint this war and are also being plunged into poverty.

Bloody awful all round.

The working class lose every war.

@TheScenicWay

Thank goodness some sensible people have come along. I’m fed up of all the black and white thinking. Most issues are very grey and knee jerk virtue signalling isn’t going to solve anything except creating more anger and division.
Agreed.

Also, made the mistake of watching Sky news last night - some filth from the daily mail speaking about the billionaire Chelsea owner. All he could fucking contribute was that the guy fist came here because of tony blair's government.]

Any excuse for that shit rag to don its partisan hat. To pass the buck and show an absence of critical thought or spine.

Why oh why does anyone in this day and age have anything to do with these tabloid trash? Every day on here there are a plethora of links to such rags, it's tragic.

A good way forward would be to STOP lining the pockets of the likes of the Murdoch media - and please, let's not think for one minute these people don't have blood on their hands.

Sorry my typing skills have left me, I'll try again.

In answer to OP's question, should the Uk banish Russian products:

I don't like the sound of this at all. It sounds hateful a bit like burning books. No thank you. I quite fancy a Borscht now. I say this with 100% love and support for Ukraine and 100% against Putin but Putin does not = Russia. I hate all form of bigotry and cancelling Russian food is bigoted.

Russia has an ancient and interesting culture and one of the reasons we have so many wars is people's love of black and white thinking. They love to have an enemy, a black sheep they can beat with all their pent up frustrations and misery. Well I love shades of grey in between black and white or preferably a spectrum of colours. We can all learn from each other's cultures, we have so much in common but interesting differences, they do enrich us I believe this even if it sounds like stupid cliche.

@AmbushedByCake1

I'm confused by mumsnet sometimes.

I've seen thread after thread this last week when anyone suggests ways to support Ukraine it's just met with derision and belittlement.

How is this supporting Ukraine? I suppose if someone comes onto a messageboard to declare all they are doing even if its not helpful then it's not going to be met with everyone fluffing their feathers about how wonderful they are.
musicforsmorks · 03/03/2022 15:01

I mean Putin suited them all just fine for their own ends, eh?

We can surely grasp the horror of this invasion and Putin's sick crimes without pandering to the black/white thinking of the gutter press.

GaiusHelenMohiam · 03/03/2022 15:01

My company has already stopped stocking Smirnoff.

Grida · 03/03/2022 15:02

This rapidly gets problematic. Should we boycott UK products as well? We sell arms to Saudi Arabia that are used to kill Yemeni civilians.

RancidOldHag · 03/03/2022 15:02

This thread put me in mind of the boycott of South African produce.

It wasn't part of the sanctions regime, but it happened anyway, simply by people voting with their wallets and choosing to avoid South African goods, and also services from companies (like Barclays Bank) which continued its business links.

People came to know pretty accurately what originated from South Africa, and so could avoid it if they wished. That might be the best way ahead, certainly in the short term, for Russian goods and services

Why? It's not even Russian?

Guessing this is an attempt at being funny?
Mummytotwonow · 03/03/2022 15:02

If you take a look at Twitter there is already a lot of requests and this is a response from Waitrose supermarkets that I have just seen so that's just one supermarket that is monitoring/reviewing.

I have absolutely nothing against Russian people. This is to do with the war. The campaign was highlighted by a Ukrainian who was asking for the UK to support with putting pressure on Uk supermarkets.

Why - it's Russian themed branding, not an actual Russian product

It's a bit like shunning Compare The Meerkat because Sergei and Aleksandr are portrayed as Russian (wonder if they're in the midst of getting a quick makeover to be Ukrainian?)

Who do you think it affects though? Sure there will be someone rich at the top as is the case for any company, but factory workers, logistic workers and the like are hardly going to be fucking oligarchs or have any say in what's going on. Not that they can access most of their money at the moment anyway. Just because it was highlighted by a Ukrainian doesn't mean its a good idea.

Madness. Smirnoff is owned by a British company, and is made in the US.
zen1 · 03/03/2022 15:08

@XenoBitch

This is going too far now.

A lot of my favourite sellers on Etsy are in Russia. Should I be boycotting them too?

Same - and on eBay. I’m not going to stop buying their stuff.

They should just change the name of Smirnoff to Gullible Smile

What are you buying from them? I've never bought on etsi.

Those with pitchforks don't care.

EmpressCixi · 03/03/2022 15:16

I don’t support this. It’s just punishing Russian expats and British-Russian families in order to virtue signal. Taking Russian products off supermarket shelves will do absolutely nothing to Putin or Russia as a nation. It only punishes people in Britain for consuming Russian products.

And besides, this could easily become tit for tat. Russia can quite easily pull Russian gas and oil off the market and the current energy hikes will seem a minuscule increase in comparison to what everyones energy bills would look like if Putin did that.

I buy mostly digital patterns/tutorials.
SamphiretheStickerist · 03/03/2022 15:17

Seriously, @zen1 check with them, see what they think will happen to their banking and postal services.

You can always do an IOU for products you want and will wait for. One of my suppliers has some doubts about the courier she uses to get stuff onto ships. So she is holding things for me and many of her customers. She raises and invoice, we promise to complete the transaction within 28 days, but only after her confirmation of services. We have agreed a 20% payment up front, for as long as the banking situation allows.

That way she has income, delayed but guaranteed, and I keep a bloody good supplier. I won't abandon her, but she has been nothing but honest and isn't sure the situation will allow all of her goods through without a hitch.

NopeNoNope · 03/03/2022 15:19

I feel like all this push from people to remove anything Russian at all from being bought is like a version of cancel culture and yelling people how they should behave, how can people be so certain that it'll make ordinary Russians take a stand against Putin?

Long term and after months and months of financial sanctions stop normal citizens from being able to support themselves and fund their lives, as well as people boycotting buying any Russian products in shops and businesses, how can we be so sure that it will make those citizens stand up to Putin instead of hating the rest of Europe if they end up going hungry and lose homes and jobs themselves? Dont they need access to income and food and basic goods themselves if the world is going to expect them to have the power to stand up against a dictator?

I'm not saying I support Putin at all because I really really really don't but I feel uncomfortable with what feels likes a movement to punish innocent Russian citizens too but I have no idea at all what the right path is. I don't drink but I've heard of one person locally bulk buying vodka in case it's taken from the shelves as the believe it's all Russian.

Mossstitch · 03/03/2022 15:20

I don't know the answer, .......... but the news item that made me tear up this morning (and haunting me as a mother of sons😢) was of some Ukrainian women feeding a BOY Russian soldier and holding their phone up so he could speak to his mother. The way he was gulping down the drink looked like he hadn't had any for a long time. Its not just the Ukrainians I feel sorry for, I didn't realise before this that all Russian young men from 18-27 are conscripted into the army. A lot of Russians are protesting this war and risking their lives to do so. I cannot imagine what all those mothers are going through Ukrainian and Russian. 💔

Imagine living through all this and getting arrested at 77 by Putins regime for disagreeing with him!
