A letter arrived for my daughter this morning, I know at 16 I should respect her privacy and not open it but I did (feeling conflicted) . No address on envelope and clearly a card inside and no letter. It’s a citizens card stating she is 2 years old than she is (I.e stating she is 18)! I looked on the citizen card site and this looks really passable and the qr code works!!! Im furious but not sure how to play this conversation. Also furious that she gets allowance each month (no job yet until after GCSE’s) and it looks like fake ID are relatively expensive (compared to her allowance). I want to calm down and have something of a remotely calm conversation when she gets in but would welcome other thoughts. Anyone handled this??

AskingforaBaskin I feel sorry for your children if you react like this to every little thing.

I feel sorry for the useless and Ineffective parents. I'll be raising my children to be considerate of their actions and the affect they have on other people.

Just don't blame anyone else when these silly children get hurt. It's the parents fault.

I had a fake ID when I was 16. It's was an NUS card from Loughborough uni, I paid £3.50 for it, but that was in the 90's when the penalties weren't so high for pub landlords or bar staff etc so it wasn't seen as a big deal really and everyone I knew had one!
Not sure how I'd feel if my dd16 came home with one, I don't think I'd be that bothered, but maybe I should be.

Not read all but honestly op can you ask her how she got it as my ds wants one and I’d like to get him one

Elsiebear90 · 02/03/2022 19:20

Everyone had fake ID’s or was using someone else’s ID when I was her age (2006), I remember me and my friends going to the supermarket to buy alcohol at 13 and getting served without any ID at all because my friend looked about 20. Nothing terrible ever happened to any of us, we turned out fine. I agree with the other posters saying pick your battles, she’s going to quite rightly argue that you were also in the wrong for opening her post, so you don’t have much moral high ground here.

Meh, I had an actual passport that id gained by taking an older friend of mine's birth certificate to the post office. (Back in the days where you could get 1 year paper ones) given they were stopped in the mid 90's I was younger than your dd. Thinking about it now that was insane but fake id's were and still are a thing. Id probably just pretend I hadn't seen it. You shouldn't have opened her stuff

Everyone had fake ID when I was young sometimes it worked but these days quite strict it’s passport or driving license. Good luck trying to tell her it’s wrong op when your opening her post .

@DGRossetti

I'm surprised at this. A citizens card is the UK's national identity card, and does have the pass hologram. [] It is considered valid ID within the UK, so I'm not sure why your work doesn't accept it.

Because it's clearly a load of rubbish if a 16 year old can get one.

They can get a fake one.

Should they refuse passports too, on the basis that you can get fakes of those as well?

Interesting my 15 year old said today that some of her friends will be 18 next year. Her birthday is August and she was bemoaning the fact all her friends would be going to clubs after they had done their a levels and she wouldn't be able to. Then she asked me what I would think about her getting a fake id.
Some of my friends back in the 90s had fake ids . I never bothered as I looked about 14 til I was 25! I've even been asked for ID (by some admittedly over zealous shop assistants) in my 40s fairly recently!

@kelsey94 I imagine she's had the conversation already since it was over a year ago.

DS bought alcohol recently with a fake ID at an off-licence. We are not happy about him doing this, as we let him have a few bottles of beer occasionally at weekends.

Edited to add he is aged 16 (almost 17).

LightSpeeds · 28/01/2024 09:16

Given the age of the original post, the daughter should be 18 by now 😂
