Thank you @RedToothBrush for your post. I needed that explanation and rationality!

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I remember my history in teacher in 1979 when l was doing my O levels, telling us we’d all be dead in a nuclear war and there was no point in doing themConfused

When Dd was born in 1993, the Berlin Wall had come down 4 years earlier. I was so happy he was being born into a safer world.

And look where we are nowSad

Raised babies in the 80's there were some scares then. We're still here.

Isn't it typical all the megalomaniac are male, small ugly men when you look back in history

Cognoscenti · 27/02/2022 17:46

@RedToothBrush He's trying to fuck with your head. Understand he's trying to manipulate and scare you.

This is exactly it (although I agree with your entire post).

Putin is a playground bully who is acting out and trying to protect himself by issuing threats. Unfortunately the world is the playground here, which is more worrying, but it's unlikely he is going to try to obliterate countries.
It is a worrying time, it would be silly not to be worried, but as someone with (diagnosed) severe anxiety who can have a full-blown panic attack at the drop of a hat, I just can't even make myself anxious over the thought of nuclear war - I really don't see it happening.

elfycat · 27/02/2022 17:47

@Pandai

I can't imagine anything like the way those in Ukraine have been willing to fight though- men and women. Really truly inspiring, as is their leader. I don't think it'd be the same here at all.

Well probably no... We've got Bloody Stupid Johnson* in charge of the country. Not exactly an inspiring leader. However most soldiers I knew were loyal to 'Queen and Country' and even those who weren't keen on the royals had the 'Country' loyalty or they wouldn't have signed up and stayed in. Governments came and went over the career-span so it's hardly the current-PM-du-jour who was the inspiration.

I'd like to add I really don't think it will come to this. I'm not doom-mongering and I'm trying to decide which aid group should have my £20 this month to benefit the people of Ukraine - that's the power I have from my laptop and I'm going to use it. A little drip of positive in the world.

I am Gen X and in my 50s, so this feels like SSDD.

Preppernan · 27/02/2022 17:47

Thank you Lemonviolet. Am usually level headed but this news made me feel panicked.

Well I hope that’s true

“Voldemort himself created his worst enemy, just as tyrants everywhere do! Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realize that, one day, amongst their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!”

 • hopefully someone strikes back against Putin.
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 27/02/2022 17:49

Putin did not plan to lose.

He is lashing out ~ we can expect more threats, because this is highly highly difficult. He has two choices neither of which he expected to have to think about. He has told his country he is on a peackeeping special operation to protect them so he actually can not bomb the shit out of Kyiv (he may still resort to this) and he can't win without bombing the shit out of Kyiv. So he has reached an impasse.

Additionally he did not expect the EU and the West to get their shit together and actually launch the volume of sanctions that even he didn't imagine. He thought he could rely on Germany, Italy etc to cover his arse due to their dependencies on Russia. It could have worked, but sadly for him he didn't.

According to reports he is now feeling the heat inside the Kremlin with reports of pro Kremlin officials and MPs demanding that the war stops in Ukraine.

From every angle this is a total disaster, and he needs to find a way out - and still look like the tough guy.

I am willing to bet that Ukraine and Russia agree to carve up Ukraine - eastern side for Russian Ukrainians and some kind of legal agreement drawn up about Nato and neutrality - IF Putin is serious about unwinding that shit storm with dignity in tact. I would go as far as to say this is actually his last chance to do so...

SirVixofVixHall · 27/02/2022 17:50

He has young children doesn’t he ? So hard to grasp him destabilising the world for them.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 27/02/2022 17:50
@Pandai

We've done it before. Dunkirk - civilians in rowing boats set out to risk their lives to bring our stranded soldiers back in very dangerous circumstances.

Both WW1 and WW2, British men fought in horrendous conditions in trenches, women drove ambulances across battlefields and toiled for hours working in ammunition factories and on the land. So fierce was our fighting spirit that Hitler didn't dare invade when he had the chance. Our supply of weapons was so low at one point, my grandfather was patrolling the coastline with a wooden gun over his shoulder to make it look like he was armed. He wasn't the only one. And he always claimed that if he had seen Nazis landing, he would have used this wooden gun to batter them with. Because letting them invade wasn't an option. That was the mentality of most British at the time, fight until your last breath.
Absolutely, I get fed up of people on here claiming Brits are Lilly livered and yellow bellied, you only have to look at what ordinary people do in the voluntary sector, the RNLI for example, everyday people who put their lives on the line to save people’s lives, entering treacherous conditions to help total strangers for no monetary gain, just a desire to help people.

justasking111 · 27/02/2022 17:53

If he has Parkinson disease he'll be impotent now which maybe driving this pseudo macho man mad as well as other symptoms.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 27/02/2022 17:54

sir Putin is a psychopath he does not have any real feelings towards anyone including his children. I know because I have personal experience of this as a child of a psychopath (I only found this out in my early forties, but looking back it was obvious all the way through childhood - just zero feelings, zero emotion the same way you would feel about a brick wall) It won't bother him, emotions isn't something that concerns him - winning is all he cares about.

kingsleysbootlicker · 27/02/2022 17:56

Great post @RedToothBrush, thank you

Livelovebehappy · 27/02/2022 17:56

This is why I think we need to stop threatening anything other than sanctions. I feel sorry for the Ukrainian people, but we absolutely cannot put our own country at risk from an attack. We’re an island, away from the rest of Europe, and he might think it’s easy to make us a target to flex his muscles to other countries. Surely there must be someone who is guarding him who would be willing to turn against him and put a bullet in his head. It’s all very well people cheering on Ukraine to beat him, but the reality is that should they win (highly unlikely) Putin will not admit the humiliation of defeat on any level, and it’s then that we will all be in an extremely vulnerable position.

chairbumg · 27/02/2022 17:57

@Livelovebehappy read @RedToothBrushs post. You might learn something

newhairday · 27/02/2022 17:58

This has really scared me. I've been avoiding the news pretty much all weekend as I just can't cope. After reading this I feel sick and can't stop shaking. I hate this world

HonestandFair · 27/02/2022 17:58

@hilbil21

I'm really trying not to be scared but I live a few miles from Faslane naval base. Would there be any point in me travelling to stay with family in England or if he uses nuclear weapons is that basically the end for all of us? (Sorry to be so downbeat)
If he were to launch to the UK it would be a tactical Nuclear strike so he would be hitting any RAF bases like Alconbury in Huntingdon Cambridge and ports. If they launch on a hypersonic missile, say from Russia you have 20 Minutes. Best thing to do would be to head towards Wales or Scotland depending where you are located educate yourself on where to avoid i.e base wise. Sorry not to scare anyone but just giving realistic info based on the worst case scenario. Id say load your cars from now with water and food and have a small bag ready!!
hilbil21 · 27/02/2022 18:00

@HonestandFair I'm in Scotland, 7 miles away from the trident submarine base. Think I would just shut the curtains and hope for the best Smile

chairbumg · 27/02/2022 18:00

@HonestandFair surely the traffic would mean you'd be going nowhere

Dwrcegin · 27/02/2022 18:01

Agree with all this. It has not gone the way he expected, either in terms of Ukrainian resistance or a large chunk of the rest of the world uniting and actually doing useful things.

Expect much more bellicose talk, entirely designed to cause maximum alarm. That is an important weapon for him now. We need to remember that MAD still applies and even if he is totally losing the plot, the people around him (who will have families outside the bunker) will be very much aware of it.

CarlCarlson · 27/02/2022 18:01

@Livelovebehappy So you let Putin do whatever he likes forever because you’re scared?
