Going on from a previous thread what is the worst car you have ever owned & what are your reasons?

So I know to stay clear lol!

Mine was my first car a Fiat Tipo.
I loved it as it was my 1st car but that thing would not start!! Petrol gauge was broke too. It was a right shed!

@1dayatatime

Least reliable were various incarnations of Land Rovers - I remember one occasion where the wind screen motor went in the pissing rain and a two hour motorway drive from home.

After waiting several hours in a motorway services for the rain to pass (it didn't) finally rigged up the wipers with a loop of binder twine that went in the passenger and drivers side windows and the passenger literally pulled the binder twine back and forth for an hour on the way home before the rain finally eased off.

Most reliable / dependable / indestructible / pleasing and made me the happiest was / is a Toyota Hilux.

I'm seeing this in my minds eye and it's absolutely hilarious 😂

Citroen 2CV. I loved it when it worked which was most of the time but if it was a cold morning it would refuse to start every single time, even if it had spent the night tucked up in a garage. Stupid bloody thing!

Housebears · 27/02/2022 05:57

@1dayatatime I had to laugh at that.
I’ve had loads of stupid little things with my land rover, most recently the doors just didn’t open. Why I have no idea but it cost an arm and a leg to repair!

ruthypfdraper · 27/02/2022 06:18

Daewoo Matiz. Was like driving a Coke can.

HardbackWriter · 27/02/2022 07:49

I loved my scenic but only because it had random storage cubby holes everywhere

I'd forgotten about the random storage. Mine had storage holes in the floor in the back - which meant that even though it had isofix you couldn't actually use an isofix infant seat because they always have those leg things.

Daewoo Matiz. Was like driving a Coke can.
Finally the Matiz gets a mention! We have a 2004 Matiz (although it’s Chevrolet branded). It’s basically a toy car, so you can’t be cross with it.
Saucery · 27/02/2022 08:03

I did like my Megane for comfort and random storage. Its crumple zone was brilliant, not that it was ever needed. But not being able to go to anywhere that had an automatic car park barrier in case the driver's window wouldn't open made it useless. I also feared that if the police ever pulled me over for a routine check my inability to open the window would be construed as being suspect and the situation would escalate. Grin
The thought that Renault will be making electric cars is hilarious.

Livebythecoast · 27/02/2022 08:15

A Peugeot 205 many years ago. I REALLY wanted one but it was a shit heap, something was always wrong with it.
Had a Kia Picanto for nearly 5 years now, it flies through MOT's, barely spent any money on it, lovely to drive and never not started or broken down Smile

InsideTheNet · 27/02/2022 08:44

40 years ago I was 20 and skint and my first car was a Morris Marina which we nicknamed 'The Icebox'.
The car leaked and when the temperature dropped it used to freeze up inside. In cold weather it wouldn't start so every night I used to take the battery out, put on charge and then put back in in the morning - I couldn't afford a new battery.
I was so relieved to get rid of it.

We've also has a brand new Land Rover Freelander that was a nightmare - constant problems. We got rid of it after a year.

Els1e · 27/02/2022 09:25

Peugeot 206. Lovely to drive but a nightmare with electrics. Was forever blowing headlight bulbs due to power surges. Would lock me out, lock me in. Electric windows worked at random but rarely when you wanted to. Part exchanged it for a Nissan Micra, which I still have 12 years later

TroysMammy · 27/02/2022 09:26

I had a Chevrolet Matiz for 9 years and I loved it, my little Noddy car which could turn around on a penny. With its 800cc engine I had a sticker on the back saying "I'm going as fast as I can".

I changed to a Citroen C1 and my BIL now has my Matiz and he loves driving around in it too. So it is now going to be the family heirloom just like my DM's old style Micra which is rotting away on his drive.

Fifthtimelucky · 27/02/2022 10:06

Interesting thread, as we are expecting to buy a new car in the next year.

I notice that someone mentioned a Vauxhall Zafira, which is what we will be replacing. We've had ours for 16 years, so it hasn't done badly!

LaWench · 27/02/2022 10:12

Same OP. My first car was a Flat Tipo. Paid £250 for it, could not figure out the manual choke at all. Got a newer car a year later.

Our current car has broken down twice since we got it in Nov, not great. We'd had leased cars for the previous 4 years with no problems so it a bit of a shock to have engine failure warnings flash up.

LaWench · 27/02/2022 10:23

Oh just read the full thread. I suppose you can guess our current car 😩 yep, a Grand Scenic. We got an old big car to help ferry stuff during our house reno but I'm already looking forward to getting a new car.

BammBamm · 27/02/2022 10:58

Vauxhall astra. Terrible drive, intermittent fault that no one could find or fix which meant it wouldn't start.
My sister had a Renault Clio which was a disaster.

Shmithecat2 · 27/02/2022 11:23

@StillMedusa

Ford Capri... DH's pride and joy... god I hated that car! I smashed it into a set of temporary traffic lights and it still wouldn't die!

Had to carry a lump hammer to hit the starter motor every time we stopped... that was fun when 8 months pregnant!

Omg, I had to do the same with an old Suzuki SJ410 😂
