Ukraine - Prepping

Reading the AIBU for being worried about Russia retaliating thread got me thinking.

Is anyone doing anything to prep for potential retaliation from Russia?

I'm thinking more along the lines things that'll help get you through a cyber attack that brings down banking, electricity, NHS, etc. Rather than nuclear warfare.

Look on the Preppers board.

nanabow · 25/02/2022 18:32

@Duntelchaig
Oh, thanks. I didn't even realise there was a preppers board.

I'm not usually one to prep but with a newborn at home I'm felling extra anxious about it

🤦🏻‍♀️

cheddez · 25/02/2022 18:36

Plus surely this counts as panic buying which preppers always try & distance themselves from?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/02/2022 18:39

Did the pandemic teach you nothing about panic buying?

nanabow · 25/02/2022 19:15

Who said I'm buying anything?

I was more thinking of:

  • charging my power packs.
  • making sure I have a hard copy of important documents, including my daughter complex medical history.
  • putting the ice blocks in the freezer so it stays cold longer if the electricity goes.

Only things I might do which could count as panic buying is get a bit of cash out for essentials, and buy a bottle of Milton incase I can't use the steriliser.

Preppers are already ready, no panic buying needed. People can't seem to tell the difference between the two... Still.
cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:20

That was my point or did you not see the OPs title!

nanabow · 25/02/2022 19:21

@cheddez

That was my point or did you not see the OPs title!
And my point is I'm not buying anything. I'm preparing things I already own.

We're preparing for a nuclear attack.

MangyInseam · 25/02/2022 19:24

"Panic buying" is problematic because it's often not well thought out, leading to shortages and people buy the wrong stuff anyway.

Stockpiling can be perfectly logical under the right circumstances. Having a lot of something on hand that is necessary but likely to become hard to find is pretty sensible if you can keep it in working order for the appropriate amount of time.

Preppers · 25/02/2022 19:26

I was looking into this. So far...

  1. I have withdrawn some cash to buy food if banks go down.
  1. I have all medical records printed, nothing complex here.
  1. We are keeping cars tanks full.
  1. I got torches and power packs topped up.
lightand · 25/02/2022 19:26

I have always printed out things I dont want to lose, for the somewhat inevitable loss of internet one day.

Preppers · 25/02/2022 19:27

Ice blocks is a good one but i dont think we even have the space Sad

lightand · 25/02/2022 19:27

NHS cyber attacks - NHS is a bit more prepared than they were even two years ago. I shall say no more than that.

lightand · 25/02/2022 19:28

electricity- preppers already have generators

lightand · 25/02/2022 19:29

nuclear - gave up trying to prepare for that ages ago.

lightand · 25/02/2022 19:30

banking - i find that one difficult.
Wouldnt mind some more tips on that myself.

GallopingHighRoad · 25/02/2022 19:30

We are preparing to fillet preppers.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:31

@nanabow I never said you were buying stuff although you did then say you might. It was the general point that you are reacting now plus there have been a few of these threads.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:33

1. I have withdrawn some cash to buy food if banks go down.

If the banks go down which would lead to an economic collapse you're going to have bigger things to worry about then strolling to the shop to buy some bread in cash.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 25/02/2022 19:38

In my head it depends on how long it goes on for. To be honest I didn’t think he would Invade. So I have no idea what could happen.
I have taken money out for food if needed. But done nothing more than that.
I learnt a lot during the pandemic that people are selfish.
When the food ran out on the normal shelves everyone went to the free from aisle. And I ended up with no food. So u bet ur arse I have and will get more food.

People are already panic buying petrol again for godsake.
I have only bulk bought my food. Not others. I am not going to go through the worry and stress of two years ago.
I think anyone who says things won’t happen are just sticking their head in the sand.

Sideorderofchips · 25/02/2022 19:40

Preppers do not tend to have generators in urban areas

Best way ever to draw attention to yourself.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:41

I'm just going to go with looting if needed!

Firkinhavinalaugh · 25/02/2022 19:42

If banks go down, is there much point in cash? It will be worthless 🤷‍♀️ Trading in gold, silver and other physical goods will be more the norm.
