That you either bought or were given as new?

Mine is a signet ring my DF gave me for passing my 11 plus. Its 52 years old and I've never taken it off since the day he gave it to me.

My house is 200 years old soon. We're going to have a party. 😅

I have a leather doctor's style bag that my auntie bought me for my 12th brithday in 1984 because I loved hers. It was really expensive at the time (around £100 iirc) and it was far too fancy for a twelve year old but I loved it and kept it for special occasions for years. I've used it every day for the past ten or so years now though and it's just more and more beautiful the older it gets. My auntie died five years ago so it's a lovely daily reminder of her. I'll be heartbroken if/when it finally gives up the ghost.

a doll I got in the 80s that is now my daughter's most treasured toy

Bigfishlittlepuddle · 26/02/2022 11:46

I've bought/found several books that are up to 250 years old. Thing from new is a sewing box my great grandfather made for my great granny and I hope to pass on to my daughter. Its about 100 years old now.

@LolaLuffnagal

I have a 50 pence coin from 1952 and a halfpenny coin. I found them in my money box that I've had since I was 11 years old and I have no idea how they ended up in there Confused
There was no such thing as a 50p piece in 1952.

I suspect what you have is a half crown - (equivalent to 12.5p) which were in general use or maybe a crown (25p), these weren't in general circulation in the same way but were minted to commemorate major events.

@Hoppinggreen

We have a coffee Grinder DHs great uncle bought as a present for his a Great Aunts family when he met them for the first time. (Not in The UK). It’s 104 years old
Sorry, missed the bit about us owning it from new
EatSleepReplete · 26/02/2022 15:05

I've still got my patchwork crib blanket on my bed. I'm 40, it was made for me while my mother was pregnant with me.

Hoppinggreen · 26/02/2022 16:02

I have a teddy someone bought for me when I was born and I am 50
It’s been mended so often it’s like Triggars broom!

The oldest thing I have is probably a portrait of one my relatives that was painted by his brother - we think in the 1840s. I also have lots of 19th century photos of various family members and quite a few old inherited books, including one that my grandmother was given as prize when she was a student teacher in 1910.

I also have a gold hunter watch that used to be my father's. I don't know how old it is but it wasn't new when he was given it in the 1920s.

The oldest thing I have bought myself is a set of 13 works by Thackeray that were printed in 1888-89. I bought them from a second hand bookshop in about 1980 for £19 (the price is still written inside in pencil)!

As far as things that are in daily use are concerned, we have some cane-backed furniture that my grandparents bought when they married in 1923, and my piano was made in 1932.

Prettynails · 26/02/2022 18:21

My grandfather brought me some 140 million year old fossils over 40 years ago and again my grandmother made me a doll.

All of my children have a teddy bought for them before birth and given to them within hours.

Prettynails · 26/02/2022 18:22

I also have my baby clothes -which are now on my childhood teddy which my eldest has

Justkeeppedaling · 26/02/2022 18:36

Some chairs belonging to my great aunt and a knitting bag that belonged to my grandmother.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/02/2022 20:00

Oh dear, I missed the 'bought or were given as new' bit.

In that case, the oldest things I have are the Christening presents I was given in 1961 - a silver mug and a silver spoon and fork.

NinaDefoe · 26/02/2022 20:31

Hairdryer c1976! My Mum bought it for me. It had a comb attachment and she'd curl my hair under with it.
