Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

DetailMouse · 25/02/2022 09:16

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

The Bank of England says it is a cryptocurrency. www.bankofengland.co.uk/knowledgebank/what-are-cryptocurrencies

Thewindwhispers · 25/02/2022 19:30

Prices will go up, they were anyway but this will make it worse. So I’ll try to be less wasteful with money.

Also trying to keep the car tank always half full cos last time we ran out of petrol I was nearly empty 🤦‍♀️

DrSbaitso · 25/02/2022 19:31

First, a bit of forward planning is not the same as panic buying.

Of course it's not. I forward plan and take sensible precautions. You panic buy!

Porcupineintherough · 25/02/2022 19:33

Cash is useless in a total war situation. Appears no one has any idea what it’s really like.

Erm no, especially hard currency like dollars. A lot of people's lives have been saved by having the means to flee. Or to trade for food, drugs etc on the black market.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 19:34

@DrSbaitso in a nutshell!

ParsleySageRosemary · 25/02/2022 19:36

There we are, a sensible practical solution we could all do fairly easily with no effect on anyone else. Why the hysteria at the idea people might think about these things.?

Because you mentioned withdrawing life savings and runs on the banks?? (voice of sweet reason).

Of course life would be easier if we had a currency with some real backing and a financial system that hadn’t jumped on everything new, shiny, untested, requiring massive power input, ideologically deregulated and very vulnerable, abandoning reality to make a quick buck, instead of planning things properly.

@Wintersbone

Our international FA has advised us to more money into various international accounts. It's not true that people aren't doing anything. High worth individuals are doing quite a lot shifting around.
What else are they doing please?

Bitcoin is not a crypto currency, I don’t trade in bitcoin, it’s an asset. It’s decentralised, no one can control it.

It very much is a cryptocurrency that people hold as an asset - a very volatile one at that.

Ottolin3 · 25/02/2022 19:49

Bitcoin as a cryptocurrency is an anomaly of mathematical purity and impossible to be copied. Whereas all other crypocurrencies have thousands of competitors due to the fact they are structurally carbon copies 1) pre-mined 2) have owners 3) Proof of stake

NoddyMcdoddy · 25/02/2022 19:50

It’s still a cryptocurrency though.

Bitcoin is a digital asset[1] designed by its inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto, to work as a currency.[2][3] It is commonly referred to with terms like: digital currency,[4]: 1  digital cash,[5] virtual currency,[6] electronic currency,[7] digital gold,[8] or cryptocurrency.[9][a]

@MissyB1

There’s nothing for us to do except pray for peace, and perhaps donate money for the inevitable refugee crisis.
Yes, praying and aiding refugees.

There is no reward without Volatility, it’s currently trading as Apple, Facebook, google, Amazon traded in the same time line as it has existed.
NoddyMcdoddy · 25/02/2022 19:53

Yes I know all this - I work in the industry and anyone would tell it is not advisable to hold all your assets in Bitcoin.

I would guess you have sourced your quote from google?

Itsnotover · 25/02/2022 19:55

I remember someone taking all their money out if the bank during the Iraq war 🙄

NoddyMcdoddy · 25/02/2022 19:56

Yes that from Wikipedia obviously.

It was the first ever cryptocurrency fact. It is a cryptocurrency.

dementedma · 25/02/2022 19:57

Have taken out some cash to keep in the house

Your so sweet, bitcoin has become more than a crypto currency and no longer widely known as a crypto currency. It’s an asset.
Londoncallingme · 25/02/2022 20:00

She’s prob thinking cyber crime throwing banks into crisis more than a run in banks.

Andouillette · 25/02/2022 20:03

@DetailMouse why are you telling fibs about the stock market? It has not crashed. Please stop fear mongering.

Chandimum · 25/02/2022 20:20

@Rollonspring1111

What steps will I be taking? I'll be focusing on protecting my own mental health in order to deal with my own personal heartbreak. I will be focusing on staying strong and shutting down from the world's problems so I can deal with my own without having a complete breakdown. It doesn't mean I don't care. I just have a lot to deal with right now and don't have the emotional capacity to take on anything else.

MrPenguinsPoppers · 25/02/2022 20:21

The idiocy has started.
As I said earlier in the thread I needed to go to Costco today, so I'd let my car run lower than usual to top up there as it's cheaper. The queue to get on to the petrol station at the store was half a mile long and back to the dual carriageway. I had to get to the store as I'd booked in for tyre fitting so ended up sat for twenty minutes in it just to get to the service centre.

Drove home, still needing petrol and both our local Tesco's are now empty of both petrol and diesel. Fortunately our local independent who's a bit of a well kept secret was open and I managed to fill up.

Madness.

Eatingsoupwithafork · 25/02/2022 20:22

Disgraceful that Mumsnet is allowing these threads…I can see no good coming from them. Haven’t we learnt from early 2020.

LoisLane66 · 25/02/2022 20:30

Yes, still walking briskly.
The only difference I made to my 'routine' as it were, is to take £1k in cash out of a bank in case of the remote chance that financial systems, broadband and mobile calls are compromised/hacked and cards not accepted.
If nothing happens I can put it back.
