Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

Clearly not, if idiots are back to panic buying. Just proves that the British public are thick as shit and leant nothing in the last 2 years.
The same selfish twats at it again.

LoisLane66 · 25/02/2022 20:38

Other than that, my mantra is to 'Never trouble trouble, till trouble troubles you'.
I have no worries about the war going on thousands of miles away and I will deal with any problems as and when they arise. No 'stocking up on anything and just enjoying life as it unfolds. I don't allow myself to worry about things over which I have no control. It's bad for your health.

Truegreen · 25/02/2022 20:49

@LoisLane66 I love this sentiment and I’m writing down this quote.

I’m not doing any stockpiling or changing behaviour day to day. I have cancelled my holiday but that is much to do with Covid restrictions in countries we’re visiting, plus the rising costs, as much as uncertainty over war and not being fully covered financially. I just couldn’t be bothered with worrying about it and will stick with somewhere closer to home.

cazinge · 25/02/2022 21:03

@sparklingbrook always in our little town! So annoying that they block the road too Grin

Alrightqueenie · 25/02/2022 21:03

Genuine question, for all those who've taken cash out of the bank what happens if you're house is burgled or goes up in smoke?

Well then, I guess they've lost the money.

Is there any completely risk-free option?

HollysBush · 25/02/2022 21:09

It’s about not having all your eggs in one basket.

@Eatingsoupwithafork

Disgraceful that Mumsnet is allowing these threads…I can see no good coming from them. Haven’t we learnt from early 2020.
It's called free speech.
@DetailMouse I was in Bulgaria when their banks crashed and everything went cash only, it got difficult very very quickly and prices sky rocketed, so I agree a enough cash for a week for essentials isn’t a bad idea.
Yes, DH and I did this a few days ago. Top us the vehicles and enough cash to buy our groceries for a few weeks and fill my car again, should a cyber attack take out the cards (it has happened, it could happen). Also refilled the camping gas stove.

Easy preps that don't cost anything as all will get used anyway.

Angrymum22 · 25/02/2022 21:22

Considering a crash course in speaking Russian?

LoisLane66 · 25/02/2022 21:28

@Alrightqueenie
The possibility of me being burgled is so remote as to be of no consequence.
My property is hard to find and I usually have to give detailed instructions plus my mobile number and WhatThreeWords plus have location finder switched on, on my phone.
There is an electronic gate and security lights plus CCTV. The front door has a double locking system and windows have locks on.
I also have excellent hearing and the courtyard is gravelled.

wingscrow · 25/02/2022 21:38

For goodness sake...

If there is a nuclear war, everybody dies. I am not sure how a bunch of £50 notes under a mattress are going to help in that scenario...

Anything else will sort itself out eventually.

The only thing I would do is have a bit of cash at home in case of temporary online/IT glitches. It is always a good idea to have that anyway. Just like with Covid, have a few supplies in your cupboard and just get on with your life...

adriftabroad · 25/02/2022 21:39

If someone steals my 100 euros I'll have to cope.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 21:39

and enough cash to buy our groceries for a few weeks

Buts that's providing the tills & the banking systems the shops rely on are unaffected.

Exactly, that's all everyone was saying at the beginning of the thread.

Someone introduced the false notion of 85 thousand and someone mentioned loo rolls and panic buying (which nobody had suggested) and someone else the idiocy of the thread and and 'hysteria' and it escalated.

Then... 'this thread should be banned'

Utter lunacy.

OK, so don't go it. My DD still needs bus fare and there is a food and veg market nearby... you do you.

I buy online, if over a weekend I can't, as banking systems are temporarily down, I'll have to go physically shopping somewhere with cash.

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/02/2022 21:55

I've donated some money to some charities.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 22:07

Im not, if the shit hits the fan I'm looting!

Livelovebehappy · 25/02/2022 22:10

What a crappy couple of years we have had. Just coming out of the Covid nightmare, and walking straight into more shit. If we survive it all, do you think in a couple of years time we’ll look back and think wtf happened there? It’s hard to remember what normal life is like.

RobertaFirmino · 25/02/2022 22:30

You could build a loo roll bunker? Sit in it and eat your tinned tomatoes out of the can

Perhaps put an empty tomato can in the loo roll bunker and crap in that. A Poo-tin.

No. Things have been getting worse and worse since Brexit.
AbsentmindedWoman · 25/02/2022 22:45

@Sparklingbrook

Your £2.92 should cover bread and milk if card payments are not an option for 48 hours. Sorted

If card payments weren't an option for 48 hours I'd just eat or drink what we had in the house I think my £2.92 would be safe. Grin

Fair enough. I accept that I am particularly aggrieved at the idea of running out of milk for my tea and coffee as it makes me really grumpy Grin
AbsentmindedWoman · 25/02/2022 22:47
@AbsentmindedWoman
Nope. Your computer issue in Aldi not taking MasterCard is not relevant to whether cash is useful in a total war situation. Things quickly devolve into bartering systems.

Now, I grant that if you’re a refugee and get to safe country, only then would cash be useful IF you can avoid being robbed by human traffickers and IF you can convert to new country currency.

But if you are trapped in an occupied country, cash is useless and makes you a target.
There is actually middle ground between "Everything is fine" and "total war", as you put it Hmm

Sn0tnose · 25/02/2022 22:48

We’re doing a few bits.

I have £100 in cash tucked away at home. I’ve got a stash of candles, matches, torches, hot water bottles and really thick blankets in case of power cuts or prices raising to the extent I can’t afford it. We’re being more careful about what we’re spending and saving as much as we can. I’m not leaving prescription requests until the last minute and we’re not making any unnecessary journeys until the petrol idiots have calmed down so DH doesn’t have to queue for three hours to be able to get to work.
