Try Semantle.

It's like Wordle in that you need to guess the word of the day, but works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, ysterday's word was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I'm currently 840 words away with a similarity of 47%. I started at under 2%.

Anybody else attempting it?

The thing I found with giving clues yesterday were that most of the top few hundred seemed so close that giving one seemed like giving the answer, with the others so far off to be useless. Hence my clue about astronauts bumping into satellites which can be used by spies.

The question of synonyms is interesting. The first one I did I was getting nowhere with an hour to go, so I turned to online thesauruses. I think I got one minute step closer but that was it.

I'm still very, very cold today.

Does anyone want 957? Message me if you do! I have 998 but that may be too close!

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/03/2022 09:34

@ClarasZoo

Is there any relevance to the score the cold words get?
Yes, I guessed a cold word with a score of 23, which led me to a word with a score of 24.62 which is showing as 370/1000.

I'm now totally stuck on 733. All the related words I'm guessing are totally cold 😂

KatyMac · 01/03/2022 09:34

First go today

Got 901 on guess 55 and now I am 20 further on and getting further away

What is with negative numbers please?

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 01/03/2022 09:35

I solved Semantle #31 in 142 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 11.25. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #64. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 22.75. https://semantle.novalis.org/

Yay! My best score yet. Was stuck on 998/1000 for about half an hour.

Arcadia · 01/03/2022 09:35

I got it in 54!!!!!

OhMygodddd · 01/03/2022 09:36

@Arcadia I’ve sent a pm!

Thank you

Arcadia · 01/03/2022 09:38

@OhMygodddd I've sent it to you!

toomuchlaundry · 01/03/2022 09:40

I’ve finally got to 914, but can’t think of any other words. Tried one which I thought was similar and got a negative number!

SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:04

I spent nearly 70 guesses on cold words and then jumped to the end. Probably luck more than anything!

My method is definitely to just keep chucking guesses out there even if they don’t feel quite right.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 01/03/2022 10:07

I'm suddenly on 927 with a bit of help from Google synonyms!

Ulysses · 01/03/2022 10:10

I solved Semantle #31 in 38 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -3.59. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #7. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 22.75. semantle.novalis.org/

I look up synonyms as well. I think it helped me this time but often its not so useful.

I was stick on this for ages this morning, but came back to it and got it in another couple of attempts. I'm always delighted when it comes up as the correct word.

SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:10

I’m all for clues, I gave them yesterday. (Especially helpful when the word is spy but your highest word is porno!) but I think we shouldn’t have clues until we’ve guessed at least 100 times. It makes you think more broadly to have to come up with ideas, and then you might stumble upon a word yourself.

SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:11

I'm suddenly on 927 with a bit of help from Google synonyms!
Or yes, look up synonyms! That’s a good idea.
Snorklette · 01/03/2022 10:11

Got it finally after a mere 272 guesses.. it’s only taken me about two hours. Blush.

toomuchlaundry · 01/03/2022 10:12

@SmolCat I have 914 and then 952! But now stuck

OhMygodddd · 01/03/2022 10:18

239 was given to me, and I’ve jumped to 255 although to me the two words are a little opposite of each other!

SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:18

Oh same words @toomuchlaundry! It’s infuriating isn’t it! If it helps, because of those words I was going to go down a theme but then decided to think more broadly about what they might mean/their impact.

SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:19

Well done @Snorklette!

OhMygodddd · 01/03/2022 10:19

957 was given to me rather and I’ve jumped to 994

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 01/03/2022 10:22

I don't know if it's cheating a but, probably is! I'm a bit stuck now on 927. Was interesting yesterday when I got lover which could say wasn't really related to the word. Although I was thinking of the war time saying
"Loose lips sink ships" !!

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 01/03/2022 10:23

A bit not a but.

Snorklette · 01/03/2022 10:24

@SmolCat

Well done *@Snorklette*!
Thanks Smile was getting to the point I was just typing everything I could see out of the window or hear on the radio Grin. My brain has now been emptied for the day.
squirrelnutkins1 · 01/03/2022 10:24

@KatyMac

First go today

Got 901 on guess 55 and now I am 20 further on and getting further away

What is with negative numbers please?

I wondered the same about negative numbers....
SmolCat · 01/03/2022 10:26

Yes it depends how you think I suppose @AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes - one persons shit word will be the thing that suddenly helps someone else to get it. I see where you’re coming from. Also it depends what other words you have. If you already have ‘military’ and ‘sleuth’ then ‘lover’ might help you jump to an idea of James Bond.
