Does anyone actually know anyone with a bunker (and a plan to get there)?

I’d just be interested. I don’t think my shed’ll cut the mustard.

I remember a former No 10 director of comms saying they show you where the PM’ll go in the event of emergency stuff (I can’t actually remember if she said nuclear war) and that Cherie Blair had wanted it redecorated. I wonder if Carrie J has asked the same! Grin

Nope! I’ve not even got a shed.

There is/was a bunker near us in the middle of the sticks. In the Cold War my dad (who wasnt in the forces and as far as I’m aware wasn’t a spy) had a key for this and in the event of nuclear war (?) would have to go there. He said it was tiny, for two people. I remember being sad he said I wouldn’t be allowed to go!

My dad’s long gone. No idea where the key is or if the bunker is still there…I might go and have a look. 😄

CovidCorvid · 24/02/2022 18:48

Meant to say it was some sort of official govt bunker.

Caspianberg · 24/02/2022 18:49

I have a cellar. But it’s full of oil tanks and stinks, I’m not actual sure it’s safe to you know, hunker down in for any length of time with the fumes.

TulipsGarden · 24/02/2022 18:50

My grandma had an Anderson shelter in their back garden, but that was 20+ years ago so it's probably been dug up by now.

DrMaryMalone · 24/02/2022 18:51

I live a few miles from this place but I imagine there would be traffic jams getting there since it’s no longer secret!

I know where there are several nuclear bunkers locally, but the only one you'd get in is a) tiny and b) highly unlikely to be any use.
DH and I do have a well developed zombie apocalypse plan though

neonleopard · 24/02/2022 18:54

We actually have an air raid shelter in our back garden, house built 1920s ish. It's a underground concrete bunker prob about 6ft by 10ft. We've never been sure what to do with it! Would probably do the job except for the slightly rotten wooden door!

Abra1d1 · 24/02/2022 18:55

We have our ‘under the stairs’ as our only option but the (small) dog will probably insist on taking up most of the space and I might have to persuade the husband to remove his golf clubs.

LabraDabraDoo · 24/02/2022 18:57

I do. My friend’s father in law. He’s a psychiatrist who had a paranoid episode of his own during the early nineties and got digging. It’s in the wilds of Vermont and is mostly used to store home brew.

dogaibu · 24/02/2022 18:58

No no bunker. But I don't want to be alive in a world where I'd need one.

BorgQueen · 24/02/2022 19:08

I know a bunker, it’s under a street in my town, between the old empty Police station and the old, now-demolished Council offices so god knows what they’ve done with the bunker. Two foot thick metal doors, decontamination showers, the works, it used to be full of old office furniture.

FindingMeno · 24/02/2022 19:12

I do.

apprenticewage · 24/02/2022 19:17

Unless these bunkers have their own air and water supply then they are useless...sorry. And their own generator and fuel. And maintain it for at least 3 months.

RagzRebooted · 24/02/2022 19:19

There's one near us, we've taken the DCs on a tour (it's part of another historic attraction). It has the air exchange thing and big generator but not sure how functional it is. I'm more concerned about cyber attacks though.

This. Wouldn't want to be alive in a world where I'd need one. Wouldn't want to deal with nuclear winter or radioactive rain or poisoned fields or millions of people dying of painful cancers or breakdown of global food supplies / energy network / etc etc etc.

I did go through a phase in primary school of sitting with my friend and designing bomb shelters though. Can't remember why- we weren't worried!

Reallybadidea · 24/02/2022 19:30

We had a family day out here a few years ago secretnuclearbunker.com/

It was the most unpleasant place I've ever been to and I actually think I'd rather just be nuked.

Poppinjay · 24/02/2022 19:33

There's one at the end of our road but I'd rather we all took an overdose than tried to live through a nuclear winter.

hauntedbillybass · 24/02/2022 19:35

Is this a thing? This wouldn't even occur to me.

Legoandloldolls · 24/02/2022 19:37

There was a bunker where I worked in a science school lab. It was for the cold war. I had kit stored in it and thought of staying in there for more than a few hours was horrific. So cold dark and utterly silent

Lucky you. Haven't visited that place in years😂 definitely not a secret now🤣🤣

DPotter · 24/02/2022 19:42

I know where the local government one is where I grew up, but as that's about 2 hours from where I currently live, that's not really useful info.

Does your town begin with a N?

We could all go to the helpfully signposted "secret nuclear bunker" in Brentwood Grin
