Does anyone actually know anyone with a bunker (and a plan to get there)?

I remember a former No 10 director of comms saying they show you where the PM’ll go in the event of emergency stuff (I can’t actually remember if she said nuclear war) and that Cherie Blair had wanted it redecorated. I wonder if Carrie J has asked the same!

I read the official plan from the US government today in what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. Basically close the curtains and hope for the best The funniest bit that made me laugh out loud is that if there is more than 1 family using the shelter don't forget to social distance!! I think I am more scared of radiation than bloody omnicron

We visited this. Very, very creepy. Loads of weird mannequins. Strange smell. Surprisingly interesting.

Can't imagine what it would be like stuffed in with loads of real people though when the generator fails and you're plunged into darkness.

My dad had one at an old military site he used to manage. It's now a car lot but he has the keys to the bunker and doesn't think anyone else locally knows it is there.

@CovidCorvid what job did your dad do? I remember someone telling me this local businessman and lieutenant type was supposed to be in charge or rebuild in the event of civil breakdown or nuclear war etc but I was never sure whether this was true or how it would work. Maybe your dad was supposed to do this?!

I wonder if they will open up the bunkers that were built in the 80s. There is a whole chain of them from the north to the south of the country, linked by telegraph?

I own a bunker. It’s compulsory here in Switzerland.

If we get to a point where we are needing fallout bunkers I'm heading to the nearest city and hoping the bomb drops on my head!

The one in Essex is the one built for the government and is a fantastic place to visit. It has been restored as a museum and has life size dummies of Maggie Thatcher et al.

At senior school we read Z for Zachariah and I remember the teacher, quite seriously, telling us where our nearest bunker was in case of nuclear war - it was the Waitrose underground car park near the school. Not much use to me now though!

I discussed this with SIL last night. I was trying to work out how many bottles of water and tins of food etc that we would need, how many batteries for torches and lots of books

I said we need to build one with air circulation and a water treatment plant to turn wee into water

I also wondered if we would be able to grow potatoes in the style of The Martian

Seriously though if it happens then I wouldn’t want to be here afterwards either.

This is actually taking me back to the late 70’s/80’s when we used to talk about the 4 minute warning and where you would want to be /who with , at the end.

My childhood home had a WW2 shelter in the back garden with two foot thick walls that (according to a then neighbour who had lived in the street as a child) the whole street used to gather in during the air raid strikes.

To be fair, all her survival efforts did have a pay off.

@WouldIwasShookspeared me too. I would take a quick death over a slow death from radiation any day. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. I think cyber attacks etc are more likely. They can cripple us through technology.

I grew up in cellardyke. Only ever been to the bunker for gigs, I can still smell it 20 years later

I told DH yeeaaars ago that I'd like to turn our basement into a bunker. Unfortunately it's still just a basement but now it also floods 🙃

There used to be one under Berkshire County Hall but it was offices last time I went past - I wonder if it's still usable?
