Anyone finding the tone of this really quite terrifying...

I’m not one to get myself in a tizz over sensationalised news but this is starting to feel very different!

A retired army general says britains children and grandchildren will be called up to fight if he enters a nato country. I know that’s not a very official source, but it’s not a great thought at all.

Almost as if successive governments hadn't cut the military to the bone and made it a really unappealing career we would be in a better position eh. No it's not a great thought but it is also wildly unlikely to happen.

FfsKaren · 24/02/2022 12:27

I'm just so sad and terrified today. This is another moment in time that will have consequences for us all anf our children.

Classica · 24/02/2022 12:28

@OMG12

This is terrible -I feel so dreadfully terrified for everyone in the Ukraine. I suspect within a week the Ukraine will be annexed. But from the UKs perspective thank God we haven’t got Corbyn! He would probably be sending troops to back up Russia!

Keir stammer will probably do fuck all to keep his nose clean, Angela “sacrificial lamb” Raynor will pop up saying it’s the fault of Posh people, David Lammie will appear saying he hasn’t got a fucking clue what to do but the Tories are doing it wrong!

top tip: focus on the party that are actually in government and what they are going to do.
cakeorwine · 24/02/2022 12:28

@Tigersonvaseline

Cake at the time the alternative was Corybn who thinks NATO are being aggressive. I know whom I'm glad to have at the helmHmm
I can think of better people than Johnson to have at the helm at the moment.

Far far better people.

I don't trust Johnson to make the right decisions.

Lovemusic33 · 24/02/2022 12:29

@ABitBesotted

Unfortunate he shares Cameron's and May's hunger for war.

This is why Trump had to go. He wasn't into it

I agree, when he spoke last week he seemed to imply that we will do all we can to support Ukraine, I think the thought of war excites him?

I find it all quiet worrying 😬

Igotjelly · 24/02/2022 12:30

There is no way UK forces will go into Ukraine. Biden and Stoltenberg have been very clear again this morning that NATO will not send troops to Ukraine. It’s horrendous for the Ukrainian people but they’re alone bar some handwringing and financial sanctions.

In other news my admiration for the Ukrainian people is so great. Can’t imagine if it was the UK we’d all be queuing up to give blood and pick up arms to protect our country.

Pandai · 24/02/2022 12:30

Boris doesn't have as much influence within nato as some seem to be giving him credit for, and no way will he have backing to go to war alone (not that he would consider it anyway).

Tigersonvaseline · 24/02/2022 12:31

Ukraine has been provediced with weapons

Me neither, many are quivering at home when the threat to this country is very low. I cannot imagine us having the same resolve and bravery as them- so many have voluntarily joined the military and are passionate about fighting to protect their country; here I expect people would be moaning and finding out ways to wriggle out of it.

ThePlantsitter · 24/02/2022 12:32

He can fuck right off. Boris Johnson talking about Russia invading Ukraine is like your husband ringing you from his mistress's bed to say how catastrophic she is for your marriage. He is utterly entwined and complicit.

PraiseBee · 24/02/2022 12:32

Haha. I have just read a little bit about him and he's from the Russian speaking East of Ukraine.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/02/2022 12:32

Igor of course we would!! don't be so ridiculous!!

cakeorwine · 24/02/2022 12:34

For those who missed it:

(I do wonder if most of this was pre-written to read well if they invaded)

Shortly after 4 o’ clock this morning I spoke to President Zelenskiy of Ukraine to offer the continued support of the UK because our worst fears have now come true and all our warnings have proved tragically accurate.

President Putin of Russia has unleashed war in our European continent. He has attacked a friendly country without any provocation and without any credible excuse. Innumerable missiles and bombs have been raining down on an entirely innocent population A vast invasion is underway by land by sea and by air.

And this is not in the infamous phrase some faraway country of which we know little We have Ukrainian friends in this country; neighbours, co-workers.

Ukraine is a country that for decades has enjoyed freedom and democracy and the right to choose its own destiny.

We – and the world – cannot allow that freedom just to be snuffed out. We cannot, and will not, just look away. It is because we have been so alarmed in recent months at the Russian intimidation that the UK became one of the first countries in Europe to send defensive weaponry to help the Ukrainians. Other allies have now done the same and we will do what more we can in the days ahead.

Today, in concert with our allies, we will agree a massive package of economic sanctions designed in time to hobble the Russian economy.

And to that end we must also collectively cease the dependence on Russian oil and gas that for too long has given Putin his grip on western politics .

Our mission is clear. Diplomatically, politically, economically – and eventually, militarily – this hideous and barbaric venture of Vladimir Putin must end in failure .

And so I say to the people of Russia, whose president has just authorised a tidal wave of violence against a fellow Slavic people, the parents of Russian soldiers who will lose their lives. I cannot believe this is being done in your name or that you really want the pariah status it will bring to the Putin regime.

And I say to the Ukrainians - in this moment of agony we are with you we are praying for you and your families and we are on your side.

And if the months ahead are grim, and the flame of freedom burns low, I know that it will blaze bright again in Ukraine because, for all his bombs and tanks and missiles, I don’t believe that the Russian dictator will ever subdue the national feeling of the Ukrainians and their passionate belief that their country should be free.

And I say to the British people, and all who have heard the threats from Putin against those who stand with Ukraine, we will of course do everything to keep our country safe.

We are joined in our outrage by friends and allies around the world. We will work with them – for however long it takes – to ensure that the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is restored because this act of wanton and reckless aggression is an attack not just on Ukraine It is an attack on democracy and freedom in East Europe and around the world. This crisis is about the right of a free, sovereign independent European people to choose their own future and that is a right that the UK will always defend.

Postdatedpandemic · 24/02/2022 12:34

Why won't US and NATO troops go into Ukraine? We have sent many troops there on exercise missions before. Were we preparing to fight there or just prodding the bear?

cakeorwine · 24/02/2022 12:35

I wonder if this will have any effect?

What happens if Russian troops are killed by NATO troops? Or vice versa?

That is how things escalate....

SockFluffInTheBath · 24/02/2022 12:38

@Horological

it is a catastrophe for the Ukrainian people and very worrying for the rest of Europe. I can't help thinking that for Johnson it's a giant opportunity to distract attention from his sleazy leadership and potentially a Churchillian moment (in his dreams).
This. Smirky long-haired hamster with the big red button. God help us all.
itsgettingweird · 24/02/2022 12:41

Putin is a scary leader.

I heard parts of his speech and wondered who he was trying to gaslight with his (paraphrased) "we have to do this to protect the Russians in Ukraine"

I also heard about his "instant retaliation".

The thing is he wants control. He wants power. And for that to happen he needs a world. I don't believe he actually intends to start a nuclear war - he just knows the threat of it is too large to ignore.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/02/2022 12:42

I think it is a huge problem with knock-on effects for all of Europe and probably much of the world and horrific for the people in Ukraine. That's what any normal person would think, even any normal politician. But a good politician would go down the route of 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst'. Boris is a terrible person and worse politician and is going to try to terrify people so that they forget about the fucking parties and lies.

My thoughts too. His chance to rebrand himself as Churchill rather than Funtime Frankie.
Covidworries · 24/02/2022 12:42

I feel we need to stay out of the dispute.

Because it would trigger world war 3?

Nice, if we were invaded do you hope people would stay out of it? No, thought not.

@cakeorwine guess I we just keep arming random factions and look surprised when they get extremists.

Notice how quite it has gone about Afghanistan recently?

War is an interesting thing when it comes to civilianisations rising and falling.
