Anyone finding the tone of this really quite terrifying...

I’m not one to get myself in a tizz over sensationalised news but this is starting to feel very different!

Johnson is making the most of it. It's his Churchill moment.

The sanctions the Tories have imposed are minimal, on a par with ones other countries imposed several years ago before this crisis.

Johnson and the Tories have many, many links to Russians, financially, politically, who knows what else. Massive donations from wives of senior Russian politicians, son of KGB leader in House of Lords. Russia Report anyone? Significant evidence of Russian involvement in EU Ref and US elections.

Putin is a power obsessed dictator who can't bear the slightest hint of democracy on his borders. It's the people of Ukraine I feel sad and worried for.

Hoppinggreen · 24/02/2022 11:31

Yes, this suits Johnson very well

Classica · 24/02/2022 11:32

Lord Lebedev's dog is called Boris.

Thewindwhispers · 24/02/2022 11:37

Boris is looooooving this. He’s had a man-crush on Churchill since school.

He wants to parade about on stage quoting sensational headline slogans and distracting the taxpayers from his unfitness to lead. Let’s hope he doesn’t actually do anything more serious.

Bunnyfuller · 24/02/2022 11:38

@Classica

Boris is a common male name in Russia.

You don't say.

But a coincidence all the same having an alsatian and a human lapdog both called Boris.

Jux · 24/02/2022 11:44

Since MT, every PM wants a war.

I'm not sure BJ would have chosen this one, it's a bit big, but it will give him the chance to live up to his Churchillian ideals. I wonder if he will.

It is appalling whoever we had at the top. Even if we had MT or Churchill or John Brown or Pitt or whoever, it is appalling.

We have to fight back. We need to go in hard and strong. The state or Parliament atm though, we're far more likely to be apologetic about it. That would be disastrous. We need to really MEAN it.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 24/02/2022 11:47

Very worrying. Should be a happy day today with covid restrictions lifting but there's been absolutely no mention. Need to step away from the news for a while I think :(

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2022 11:50

‘Boris will address the nation’

Book early. More pearls of wisdom🙄

Isn’t the Tory party funded by the Russians?

Brainwave89 · 24/02/2022 11:51

TBC, Putin is aware that we can do very little to militarily support Ukraine, and he wishes to demonstrate the weaknesses of the West- which he is doing. Sanctions are limited in the UK and Russia has successfully infiltrated Government, The Opposition,The City and our culture. As a result nothing material will happen.

colouringindoors · 24/02/2022 11:53

fb.watch/bnaJii8_6r/

This is a very good video provided by Led By Donkeys, from a Ukranian activist. She demands tough sanctions (yesterdays matched US' of 2014) to stop Putin's funding from Russian oligarchs

ABitBesotted · 24/02/2022 11:56

Unfortunate he shares Cameron's and May's hunger for war.

This is why Trump had to go. He wasn't into it

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 11:57

I have more confidence in a rallying cry from Boris Johnson than Biden right now! I don't know how he managed to stagger through his whole speech last night.

Pr1mr0se · 24/02/2022 12:00

Horological - yep I agree with you totally. However this also has more serious long term implications for more than just the Ukraine and could impact the UK quite a lot too regarding retaliation tactics from sanctions at least.

nearlyspringyay · 24/02/2022 12:01

Boris and Biden FFS. I'm scared about China's reaction because they will get involved somehow.

Feels like putin has been biding his time all over covid.

My ten year olds asked me today if they would have to be evacuated - they've extrapolated from the news and also learning about WW1 and 2 at school. They won't be hearing the news anymore.

I grew up in the ME, through the gulf war, and it was terrifying even though we were in a non affected country, we were issued with gas masks.

Watching BJ now

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 12:02

I feel like I am actually watching Churchill as Boris speaks.....

Shit, it is giving me the chills. We are here again. My grandmother would be horrified, having survived one world war - so little time until we are here again.

Classica · 24/02/2022 12:03

I feel like I am actually watching Churchill as Boris speaks.....

Really?

MsFogi · 24/02/2022 12:03

@Horological

it is a catastrophe for the Ukrainian people and very worrying for the rest of Europe. I can't help thinking that for Johnson it's a giant opportunity to distract attention from his sleazy leadership and potentially a Churchillian moment (in his dreams).
Indeed we can all sit and watch him addressing the nation...what a statesman...such a Churhillian moment...Hmm
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 24/02/2022 12:05

When BJ was allegedly on his Scottish honeymoon there was an enormous Russian yacht in the Firth of Forth.

Which I found interesting.

Silversprinkles · 24/02/2022 12:06

Boris obviously hoping that speech will "go down in history". Wanker.

nearlyspringyay · 24/02/2022 12:08

@Classica

Really?

He's channelling Churchill while nicely avoiding the shit in his own country.

He's had a shit deal though, covid, potential ww3, I would have resigned!

On a serious note his address has out a chill through me. Someone inside must want to take him out / launch a coup

42isthemeaning · 24/02/2022 12:10

Bet he still doesn't regret allowing the sons of Russian oligarchs to sit in the House of Lords, voting on UK laws. Lots of very wealthy Russians living in the UK on special visas; no questions asked about how that money was acquired...

Mistlewoeandwhine · 24/02/2022 12:13

This is just BJ trying to regain some status in the eyes of the Tories. We aren’t going to war with Russia for the simple reason that they would destroy us. Same as no one did any when China took over Tibet. It’s all shite-talk.

CornishGem1975 · 24/02/2022 12:13

We have to do something, it's as simple as that. We can't just sit by and watch Putin do this.

cakeorwine · 24/02/2022 12:14

Churchill would probably have wanted to put UK forces into Ukraine.

Not the world's greatest strategist. He foresaw the issues with Germany but he fucked up with Norway.

Easy to channel an inner Churchill.

It is scary. It's scary to think that we have Boris as a Prime Minister at this time.
