Anyone finding the tone of this really quite terrifying...

I’m not one to get myself in a tizz over sensationalised news but this is starting to feel very different!

Aren’t you the poster who refers to people in the U.K. living outside of London as ‘The Others’?
Nope. Not me.

I’m surprised she’s not brought up London’s homeless yet.
And smoking.

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 17:35

Alexandra I’m not sure re higher prices but it made me nervous. Hopefully that’s what he meant and I missed part of it.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 24/02/2022 17:35

Our best hope is the Russian army say no.

If you watched Putin’s address to the people, he was haranguing them rather than trying to get them onside.

I am not sure the Russian people or army have much appetite for this war.

DirectionToPerfection · 24/02/2022 17:35

@Tealightsandd

The reality is that both issues are a worry. Ukraine and Covid. Ignoring the latter won't make it go away - and it will impact on the former.
Bizarre posts. This is a thread about an ongoing invasion of a European country, a matter that is extremely serious and will have consequences for us all.

There have been ample opportunities to discuss covid over the last two years, there's no need to bring it into this thread.

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 17:35

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

It is wonderful to hear all the leaders unite, I know it shouldn't take this much, but honestly made my eyes fill with tears - we need to all work together to drive out this darkness.
It does make a change from tearing each other to bits
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 17:37

I know what you mean marsha I am not sure Starmer was talking about petrol prices either. That is already a given. I don't think anyone gives a damn right now about that, given what is happening in Ukraine.
I thought it was a loaded statement, and also Johnson's earlier when he said the west will not look the other way.

Tealightsandd · 24/02/2022 17:37

And smoking.

Well Boris wants to be like Churchill. He enjoyed a puff.

Perhaps smoking taxes can be used to help people struggling to heat or eat.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 17:38

And that the west will be united in its response.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 24/02/2022 17:38

That's literally the point - being forced into it. I don't understand why you think today's young generation would have any more power to resist

We've come a long way since WW2 and we don't doff our caps to our "betters" anymore. The youngsters today would only comply if there was an existential risk to this country. There was such a risk in WW2, my DH would argue there was also such a risk in WW1. At the moment, there isn't but that could change rapidly of course.

Alexandra2001 · 24/02/2022 17:39

@MarshaBradyo i think given where we are, its all KS could have meant? but they will be huge, perhaps not for MPs but for the rest of us.

We need to nationalise NorthSea oil & gas, we have to use our own supplies now & not buy it back at world prices.

Aside, i did roll my eyes when BJ went on about european freedoms to travel freely and how bright the future was in the early 90's.

He really has a nerve.

jgw1 · 24/02/2022 17:39

@DuncinToffee

Keepyourheadscrewedon you realise that Russia still has military conscription?
And Singapore. Don't we want to be more like Singapore?
MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 17:40

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

And that the west will be united in its response.
I don’t mind united in response, I prefer it to us thinking we can deal with this without talking to others and agreeing

But sacrifice of British public generally brings up bad outcomes for those not in power and I’m not keen on that

AledsiPad · 24/02/2022 17:40

@Tealightsandd

Get a bloody grip. Covid is finishing. You need to find a new obsession.
jgw1 · 24/02/2022 17:42

@DinnoWoman

Why would they want to do that?
It is a major source of electricity in Ukraine. Who controls the power plants controls the country.
Tealightsandd · 24/02/2022 17:42

Bizarre posts. This is a thread about an ongoing invasion of a European country, a matter that is extremely serious and will have consequences for us all.

Likewise Covid. Hence the relevance. What is bizarre is the selective concern. Why the concern over tanks but not a deadly and dangerous disease?

There have been ample opportunities to discuss covid over the last two years, there's no need to bring it into this thread.

There is (the need). The selective concern wrt threats is almost farcical.

Talk on this thread about protecting people. Who? Who do we protect? Not the many many people (Ukrainian or otherwise) killed or disabled by Covid.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 24/02/2022 17:43

I just can’t stand BJ any more.

You just know that were there ever threat to life and limb, he would be the first one out, taking his 30 wine bottle fridge with him to the nearest nuclear-hardened bunker.

speakingofart · 24/02/2022 17:43

@Tealightsandd

Odder still to profess concern over potential loss of life or disablity....but only if caused by one particular threat. It's ok, apparently, if it's a deadly and disabling disease. Ok then.
Oh go and whinge about it on the Covid board. People have moved on, get over it.

Imagine waking up this morning to the sound of bombs in your city and show some empathy.

leopooh · 24/02/2022 17:44

@Seedandyarn I just don't see mass conscription

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 17:44

I feel the same when Starmer does his nationalistic stuff Reluctant re sacrifices

Real shudders

Tealightsandd · 24/02/2022 17:44

We were told just this week that we must 'learn to live with' a very serious threat that will have long lasting consequences. And now that's changed...?

leopooh · 24/02/2022 17:45

But sacrifice of British public generally brings up bad outcomes for those not in power and I’m not keen on that

Economic sacrifice, a big one. Inflation will get worse, prices of lots of things will go higher. Our economy is very dependent on house prices which is awash with Russian money. More tax & they have exhausted income so it will be other tax increases.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/02/2022 17:46

Covid is a virus which acts in a more or less predictable way. Putin on the other hand...

The Ukraine situation is terrifying on a completely different level to Covid.

MarshaBradyo · 24/02/2022 17:46

Is that what he meant?

Someone was noisy here and I may have missed the clarification

Tealightsandd · 24/02/2022 17:48

I've made my points. Ignore all you like but that won't change the facts.

I'm off for my evening meal. Might as well eat, drink, (smoke), and be merry (but keep the masks 😷).

Let's hope the animals take over asap. Us humans have fucked it up one time too many 🤞
