Anyone finding the tone of this really quite terrifying...

I’m not one to get myself in a tizz over sensationalised news but this is starting to feel very different!

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 15:18

Maybe the Tories will address the Russia Report in a civil way unlike they did yesterday when Caroline Lucas raised it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2022 15:18

think the word with those in the know is that conscription will be making its way back, rumoured to be those between 18 and 25 although assurances are being drawn up that it will begin with those aged 20-25.
An announcement will probably be made at the end of next week unless a miracle happens. It is going to be a huge administrative task but an army is needed as soon as possible

GrinGrin

No way any of mine are doing conscription. The idea is preposterous.

MistOverTheDowns · 24/02/2022 15:19

I think it will be difficult to avoid but if you figure out a way, let me know @ArseInTheCoOpWindow

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 24/02/2022 15:20

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

It appears that Ukraine have shot down many Russian fighter jets and are holding most areas. We are 100% behind you Ukraine!!
Are you fucking stupid? As if those Russian soldiers deserve death? They are not there by choice. No one is "winning" here
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 15:20

They are fighting for their right to exist, to be free and to not be butchered and raped by a dictator and his depraved army.

I can not tell you how happy I am when I see what is happening, and Ukraine are fighting back so well! Putin underestimated the resistance. Miscalculated clearly. Every jet blown out of the sky is one less to worry about killing innocent babies and children of Ukraine, so spare me the fucking sob story.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2022 15:20

Let’s just send our young people as cannon fodder. They’ll be champing at the bitConfused

myrtleWilson · 24/02/2022 15:22

@DuncinToffee

This isn't some kind of computer game Keepyourheadscrewedon where your cheer your team on
This - the incessant messages replete with exclamation marks and kisses feels more suited to a thread commenting on Eurovision or the Strictly final.

@Tigersonvaseline

Big Woolley

I think we are a little like scrappy do, being held back by scooby.

We need to do what we can like every small nation and let the big boys deal either this.

The actual limits of what we can do are teeny compared to the might of the EU.

Absolute nonsense
itsgettingweird · 24/02/2022 15:23

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

This is much more serious than any other debate, we will see a change of tone next week of that I am sure itsgettingweird love your user name by the way Grin
Thanks. I've had it for years but it's sadly apt right now!
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 15:25

Ukraine is holding the areas, as we had hoped and prayed for.

If the Russian soldiers choose to invade an innocent nation and are happy to bomb civilian areas without a thought of the women, children and babies that are being killed right now what else can they expect??

Tilltheend99 · 24/02/2022 15:25

You can generally tell by the expression on the face of the newscasters as they generally know a lot more about the seriousness of the situation than they are able to say. Reminds me of the start of the pandemic at the mo.

What utter, utter bollocks. Absolute tosh!
MistOverTheDowns · 24/02/2022 15:26

General Sir Richard Shirreiff was on Radio 4 this morning and answered "Absolutely" when asked if the young people of this country might have to fight.

That didn't come off the top of his head. It has already been discussed and his answer is just part of the putting the unthinkable out there-a sort of softening up!

He knew he would be asked this and instead of dismissing it, he gave it credence. I'm sure he would have preferred to dismiss it but, as I said earlier, conscription for 18-25 year olds has already been discussed and plans are made.

This was it's first "soft" public airing.

DinnoWoman · 24/02/2022 15:26

Glad to hear Liz Truss is getting wheeled out again.

I hope she has her Big Russian Hat on. Pretty sure that made all the difference a couple of weeks ago.

There is no way that they will join, or be forced to join. They’ll just be civil disobedience. What’s Boris going to do?!Grin

We live in a modern world. Who’s going to fightfor queen and country realistically? I’m sure all the uni students and other young people will be happy and willing to go and fight a war created by old white men. It’s not even in NATO.

Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 15:27

It is a great name itesgettingweird and so perfect for the times we live in both with covid and now with this needless war.

I am watching the news, and feeling some relief that Ukraine seem to be doing okay - thank the good lord above.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/02/2022 15:27

You can't physically force someone to fight if they don't want to fight.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2022 15:28

The fact that it’s being ‘talked about’ shows how out of touch the talkers are.GrinGrin

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 15:29

Keepyourheadscrewedon you realise that Russia still has military conscription?

DinnoWoman · 24/02/2022 15:29

Isn't shiteiff retired now? Why would he know anything about what plans are? Maybe he's getting mixed up with the plot of one of his books.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2022 15:29

Conscription! Sorry but l just find it ridiculous. 😂😂😂😂

It is way too early to make any assessment. Way too early.

One purpose of advance battalions is to draw the sting of the opposing side. Significant information will be gained by Russian forces over the exact capabilities of the Ukrainian army and air defences and the intensity of any response. That assessment will undoubtedly cost Russian lives at this stage, but less lives overall as Russia flexes its operational response on the ground.

You called? Grin
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 15:29

No, quite right miss If the Russian army choose to disobey their orders and refused to harm Ukraine, then Putin's game would be finished, instantly.

They can lay down their arms and refuse. Any decent person would never participate in such an horrendous war crime.
