What did we see last night..?

We had been away for a few nights and travelled back quite late. Towards the end of our journey, this was about 2am, we were driving along an A road in a rural area when something crossed the road in front of us in full headlights for about 3 seconds. It was about the height of a person, maybe 6 feet or over, but had short powerful legs and hips which seemed to move in a circular fluid fashion. It was not a deer because it stood on two legs. This was in the midlands and the area is traditional rolling fields and woodland. In this particular spot there are no houses or buildings, nearest is over a mile away. We drove back today as its only 7 miles from home to look at the road layout and whatever it was moved into a wide bowl shaped field dropping down to a stream. Any ideas?

Last year a couple of bears escaped from their enclosure after high winds brought down a tree which provided an escape route. They can walk on their hind legs surprisingly well.

I haven't seen any reports of an escaped bear recently though. Maybe there's a zookeeper somewhere that needs to do a head count...

JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 19:55

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

It was a wallaby. I used to live in West Sussex and they were all over the place. You'd often see a rogue one at night.
Where? I've lived in West Sussex since 1995 and I've never ever seen one!
littlepeas · 21/02/2022 19:56

Savernake Forest story isn't scary, as it is over-egged and clearly made up.

I'm also in Warwickshire! We're supposed to have a big cat knocking about somewhere aren't we? That's what it says on the wall in Coffee#1 in Warwick anyway!

Deer do stand (and walk) on their hind legs. It's a thing (possibly threat display when not just reaching up to eat bits of tree).
That's flipping spooky and awesome!

Satun

JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 19:58

Savernake Forest itself is still a bloody weird place imo..

I saw a chupacabra on a roof when I was a very young child. At least that's the closest image I can get of it. I was with my Mother looking out of the window and I was waving at something. She asked me what I was waving at and I said, 'the black man on the roof'. She couldn't see anything and pulled me away from the window. I still remember being upset with her because I wanted to wave at the smiling man on the roof - he looked fun. Never saw it again.

Sounds like a description of a skinwalker/Wendigo (Creatures from Native American folklore) but seems unlikely given your location. Sorry, no help but fascinating/spooky 🧐

Also sounds like Zuckerberg but that's a whole other story 😂

Ah...that's interesting. Nothing to do with him, but if "Scucca-Beorg" is Germanic, then it has other connections in that area. That is the old name, but now that village is called Shuckburgh. The market town is Daventry which was originally Dane Tree. So, viking origins in this area it seems.

ponkydonkey · 21/02/2022 20:06

We have escaped
Emus
Rheas
Wallaby's

They freak everyone out especially at night

The locals are used to it now

JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 20:08

GallopingHighRoad Yes, Sussex has some very strange spooky areas, but then it has a pagan, brutish past plus it was the last county in England to convert to Christianity, but yes there are places that are really weird, we have the Beast of Binsted, the woods there are spooky as F, it's also meant to be haunted by a Gamekeeper (I can walk to that hamlet but for obvious reasons I don't!) Chanctonbury Ring is meant to have Devil worship and UFO sightings..so yes lots going on down here in Sussex!

Daisycrown · 21/02/2022 20:12

OMFG that story...my blood just ran cold and every hair on my head and arms stood up!

Sneaking on while working

So is this the origin of the black shuck and white shuck stories, I wonder.

JohnStonesMissus · 21/02/2022 20:35

EmmaH2022 Yes lets! I forgot to mention Kingley Vale, the trees there are meant to have Vikings buried underneath which come alive at night.. so we have a good choice!

I saw a rare white deer "Ghost of the Forest" today but it was on all 4 legs. 😁
