Do you know these words?

Apparently the list on the right is much better known by men and the list in the left by women. Sounds like bollocks, I thought, but just tested myself and DH and we both knew all of “our” words and only a handful of the others.

Do you know these words?
OP posts:
JulesRimetStillGleaming · 17/02/2022 03:02

I know a lot on the left as I did Physics A level.

The ones on the right I knew more of. Depressingly. I'm not a fabric and flowers kinda gal except I must me.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 17/02/2022 03:03

fallfallfall · 17/02/2022 03:20

Yes I’m familiar with all the right and most of the left thanks to tradesmen in the family and old movies. A howitzer is a gun type, the yakuza are the Japanese version of the mafia etc.

sashh · 17/02/2022 04:11

I know most of them on both lists.

I think there are some anomalies, if you know what gauss is then of course you know what degaussing is.

One thing that is interesting for me is the word piezoelectric, you might not know the word but if you have ever had an ultrasound you have encountered piezoelectric crystals they are in the bit the sonographer holds to your body.

autienotnaughty · 17/02/2022 04:17

I know all the ones on right none on left.

polkadotpixie · 17/02/2022 04:51

I know all bar one on the right but only 3 at a push on the left

TeenPlusCat · 17/02/2022 06:09

I know servo as DH flies radio controlled planes (see also aileron) and is often heard muttering about them! I also worked for an electronics company, hence knowing things like degauss.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/02/2022 06:14

I'm fitting the stereotype. I vaguely know one on the left but can give a detailed explanation of all those on the right.

Theskullcupofdoom · 17/02/2022 06:20

@MorganSeventh

Ah, I saw an interesting article discussing this publication will try to dig it out... it comes down to what you mean by 'know'. Is it enough to recognise it as an actual word, or do you need to be able to provide a definition. In general, men said they knew the words if they recognised them, women only said they knew them if they could define them, if I recall correctly.
I was wondering if this was the case TBH. Men know everything Hmm
Dilbertian · 17/02/2022 06:50

Only two words on the left that I couldn't either define, give a context for or use correctly in a sentence. None on the right, though more than 50% of the words on the right are to do with fabric, whereas the list on the left is more diverse, so they're hardly comparable.

All it shows is that I have eclectic interests.

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 08:10

No, it wasn't. The OP said the list on the RIGHT was much better known by men. Pedantic, moi? Yes, indeed I am.

Which was obviously a mistake as the data is right there by the words

NalPolishRemover · 17/02/2022 08:17

That vocabulary test is v interesting - thanks for sharing!
I got 91% of the real words & 7% non-words giving a score of 84% apparently

Bumpsadaisie · 17/02/2022 08:36

I knew a few from the left (shemale, howitzer, parsec, bosun) and most from the right.

ShowOfHands · 17/02/2022 08:42

I got 91% too but zero non words. I only clicked yes on words I absolutely knew. I'm going to get dh to do it later.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2022 09:43

I’m familiar with all the ‘female’ ones, inc. meanings.
Of the ‘male’, only aileron and strafe. I’ve seen azimuth before, but still don’t know what it means.
Memo to self, always look up any unfamiliar word before you forget.

MedusasBadHairDay · 17/02/2022 10:00

It's more a test of your interests surely? The right hand column is all sewing and flowers (whipstitch very useful for hand sewing nice neat seam finishes fwiw) and the left is all tech/science terms. I did better with the tech ones than the science ones tbh.

So if you were a geeky, techie, dressmaker with a horticultural DH who you also shared an interest in military history with then both lists would be a bit of a breeze. Not that I'd know... 😂

Snoopsnoggysnog · 17/02/2022 10:31

This is so interesting. I will share with DH, who has a physics and engineering background.
I know hardly any of the words on the left but all on the right. I have no interest in dress making, but anyone with a passing interest in fashion, which I do have, will know the words on the right.

Classica · 17/02/2022 10:34

I knew all the words on the right and only 'boson' on the other left.

MissManagable · 17/02/2022 10:38

@TheVillageShop

The list on the right is mainly to do with fabric or needlework - tulle, peplum etc. and I knew every one.

The list on the left can't be real, surely. I knew only one of the words - shemale, and I'm not even sure that's a proper word.

Unless, as a female, I can't tell left from right Grin

Grin !

Same here btw!

ldontWanna · 17/02/2022 10:39

Just asked OH. Only 5 words from each list.
I win on the "male" one.

daisypond · 17/02/2022 10:58

@Classica

I knew all the words on the right and only 'boson' on the other left.
I think boson is an unusual word to know if you don’t know some of the others. It’s a very physics word. Most of the words on that list are physics and engineering, with a smattering of warfare ones.
HorrocksToThem · 17/02/2022 11:06

I don't know any on the left and only about half on the right. Must be a bit thick!

Classica · 17/02/2022 11:10

@daisypond, the reason I know boson is from reading up on Higgs boson when it broke through into mainstream news a few years back.

daisypond · 17/02/2022 13:38
@daisypond, the reason I know boson is from reading up on Higgs boson when it broke through into mainstream news a few years back.
Ah, yes, of course

EssexLioness · 17/02/2022 14:03

I knew none of the ones on the left, but all on the right. Will ask my husband when he gets in from work
