Do you know these words?

Apparently the list on the right is much better known by men and the list in the left by women. Sounds like bollocks, I thought, but just tested myself and DH and we both knew all of “our” words and only a handful of the others.

Do you know these words?
OP posts:
EdithStourton · 16/02/2022 18:44

13 on the left, all on the right.
I read too much military history.
DH is a nerd.
I see.

EdithStourton · 16/02/2022 18:46

I sew.
Goddamn.

Gladioli23 · 16/02/2022 18:46

I recognised all but 2 on the left and all on the right but the left hand side is a lot fuzzier in terms of meaning - I know ish what most of those 18 mean but wouldn't have been prepared to make a bet on my definitions being correct for a good chunk.

grannyjacob · 16/02/2022 18:51

I know all the words on the right, bar “whipstitch”, never heard of that. I know 13 of the words on the left, I also enjoy military history plus I have a g’son who was into Warhammer for a while, and I, saddo that I am, love the Warhammer books.

ExactlyThat · 16/02/2022 18:53

Never heard of whipstitch but knew all of the others, and only one on the left.

SpikeDearheart · 16/02/2022 18:57

I knew all except bushido. I am a scientist though, which helps a lot with the left hand list.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 16/02/2022 18:59

I only know whipstitch as I crochet, didn't know it beforehand

RoseyLentil · 16/02/2022 19:31

I knew all on the left and 10 from the right Smile

JimmyDurham · 16/02/2022 19:36

Lot of aviation related words in the "man's list".

pitterpatterrain · 16/02/2022 19:38

The link is interesting !

60% of words and 0% of non words

SpongebobsPants · 16/02/2022 19:42

I know 4 on the men's list and all on the women's list! I only know katana because my 9yo said it a couple of months ago and I asked him what it meant!!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 16/02/2022 19:53

I know 15 on the left and all of them on the right.

tobypercy · 16/02/2022 20:04

@Porfre

A lot of the ones on the left are physics related
^^this It's not directly because of gender.

Obviously a high proportion of people who've studied physics know the left hand list, and a high proportion of people with an interest in dressmaking know the right hand list.

It's not surprising it's split by gender lines given only 20% of physics students are female and it's still fairly unusual for men to be interested in fabrics.

MaizeAmaze · 16/02/2022 20:05

I know about half the mens list, and 3/4 of the ladies list. They are heavily stereotyped tho!

I got 80% on the link tho - and none of the made up words.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 16/02/2022 20:06

Oh it’s really interesting. I went into it all cocky because I think my vocabulary is pretty good, but only knew 6 on the left (and all on the right).

Bushido I remember from Shogun!

RonniePickering · 16/02/2022 20:13

Wow I read the left column and thought "they're all obscure words" and knew every one on the right.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/02/2022 20:13

Just three on the left. 😬 If someone told me the rest were nonsense I'd take their word for it.

Ontopofthesunset · 16/02/2022 20:28

Well, basically most of the words on the left are to do with physics and most of the words on the right to do with fabrics or dressmaking. DH knew about half of the 'women's' words - I knew them all but read a lot of 19th century literature in which tulle and voile and damask featured heavily - and we both didn't know the same 'men's words', like gauss/degauss and servo.

daisypond · 16/02/2022 20:34

I know all the women’s list abut only about three quarters of the men’s list. It’s telling that the women’s list seemed blindingly obvious to me - I could say precisely what all those words meant - but I was much less sure on many of the men’s.

QuercusRose · 16/02/2022 20:36

@supersocks you're thinking of bosun (sailing). Boson is something in physics (Higgs-boson perhaps)

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/02/2022 20:51

That link was really interesting, I knew 63% of words, and didn’t click on any of the non words. Apparently that’s good for a native speaker. I think some of the words I didn’t know were made up though 😂

ExactlyThat · 16/02/2022 21:35

DH knew most on the left and barely any on the right.

HopefulProcrastinator · 16/02/2022 21:43

Both my husband and I knew most of the words on the left and struggled with the words on the right.

By "know" I mean we can use them confidently and correctly in a sentence...not just recognise it's a word.

Gladioli23 · 16/02/2022 22:27

That test is quite interesting.

I did it once and as instructed only did words I really KNEW were words as per the heavily penalising thing. I got 0 non words and 70% of words.

Then I did it again (it gives a different word set each time) and just did the whole thing on whether I felt like I knew them, without then interrogating that. I got 1 non word where I wasn't sure but my fingers moved before I could stop them, and identified 90% of the words.

SuperSocks · 17/02/2022 03:00

@QuercusRose In thought that I may have been mistaken there! Thanks for clarifying!
