@sueelleker it was very windy when we scattered my DGM ashes, my brother had the wisdom to put the urn really close to the ground so we weren’t covered in my poor gran. Hope it’ll be calm though by then where you are Flowers

I've just had a phone call from the funeral director, asking if we want to scatter the ashes ourselves or have the celebrant do it. If it's very windy we might get them to; they've had more practice at it!

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 17/02/2022 11:32

@sueelleker might be a good idea, we were all a bit hysterical through a mix of grief and and thinking my gran would have found the sight of the four of us wrestling trying to get the lid of the urn loose (it actually comes out the bottom) and trying to avoid getting covered most amusing. That actually helped!

Silkierabbit · 17/02/2022 11:40

Sue Hope it goes as well as it can and thinking of you.

We have had a Scottish breakfast, similar to English breakfast with potato tatties added. DS had one, very rare for him to try new food but he loved it.

Swimming later currently got hail.

HildaTablet · 17/02/2022 12:09

I hope it all goes as well as possible Sue. A difficult day for you. I speak as one who still has her mother’s ashes and can’t come to a decision about what to do about them. It’s very hard and emotional Flowers

Silkie glad to hear you made it without too much incident - the news has been quite scary on account of the storms. It was very wild overnight here in the SE and the pavements were littered with bits of twigs and trees when I went out for coffee this morning (we're rural-ish with a big park and lots of trees). Luckily nothing major damaged.

Two people have come to the door this morning looking for another address - one from a bee-keeping group. DH would love to keep bees but I don’t think we’re quite up for the commitment really.

Champagneforeveryone · 17/02/2022 14:57

makiwa how old is DC1? DS did an expedition to Kenya with his Explorer Scout group when he was 15yo and met the young lad we sponsor. They are similar age and DS took some items out to him, including some of his own old clothes. 2 1/2 years in, that experience remains the one thing that has had the biggest impact on his life and changed his outlook completely. He returned a much worldlier and humbler young man and there's not a week goes by where I don't think how pleased I am we pushed him to go - it even makes the interminable hours of fundraising worth it--

Good luck sue, it must be hard enough without the added stress of the weather.

I am about to call The Intrepid One and check on her plans. DS's school is shut tomorrow on account of the weather which is practically unheard of and gives a rough indication of the sort of weather we are supposed to expect.

DH is busy lashing down the empty gas cylinders - they are 47kg full but very tall and I certainly don't fancy the idea of the empties blowing about the place.

HelenaJustina · 17/02/2022 15:09

I did a site walk this morning and sent an email to all staff with a list of ‘batten down the hatches’ actions. Fingers crossed the building makes it through unscathed, likewise it’s occupants!

Makiwa · 17/02/2022 15:27

Champagneforeveryone she is 26. She is an air stewardess with Air France so the flight is work. They have a system where the pilot will authorise extra baggage for cabin crew if the flight isn't too full. Colleagues leave cases of donations and the next crew pick up either full or empty baggage (from either end) if you see what I mean.

Sue I think that your DH's clothes will be much appreciated by their new owners and the charity very grateful for your donation.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/02/2022 16:07

DMil's is still stored at the undertaker's - we will have a proper burial in the family plot when the weather is better and when we are allowed to celebrate her life the way she planned.

Silkie It is great when they try something new and like it and you can put it on the list of acceptable dishes.

MissConductUS · 17/02/2022 16:35

Champagne, I think you inherited a bit of your DM's intrepidness. Smile

I had no idea about storm Eunice until I saw everyone talking about it here. It sounds like a proper noreaster.

Silkie, my DD's list of acceptable foods is fairly small, but it's expanded a lot since she went to uni. It will get better. It's odd because DS was a very adventurous eater since he was a toddler. If he saw us eating it, he'd give it a try.

Makiwa, what a lovely thing for your DD to do. Flight crews here have been having a lot of problems with unruly passengers, mostly due to covid restrictions. I have to fly to Florida next week (leave on Thursday, return on Saturday) and I'm not really looking forward to it. It's work, not a holiday.

makiwa that's amazing, hearing things like that always make my day just that little bit better Smile

The Intrepid One now has a link to the rail service update and it's stark warnings not to travel "unless absolutely necessary". In my minds eye I picture her waving an airy hand and declaring it "a bit breezy" Confused

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 17/02/2022 18:21

Champagne DH has just been out “checking the homestead Ma” 🙄 and lashing the swing up. Wise to secure empty gas canisters tho.

Makiwa what a lovely thing for your DD to do.

Silkie great that DS tried something new, DD is very suspicious of new foods and her diet is limited, to put it generously. Hope you’re having a lovely break.

MissConductUS · 17/02/2022 18:51

Champagne, I will keep your mum in my prayers. 100 mph winds can easily bring trees down onto train tracks, which is probably why the authorities are strongly advising against train travel.

I do have a bit of truly mundane news to share.

Back in the early days of the pandemic, paper products were in short supply. I had trouble getting the lovely paper towels kitchen roll we usually buy, but I found an online office supply store that sold them by the case. So I ordered a case. By the time it arrived, I was able to get the nice ones again, so it sat in the garage until last fall when I needed the box to ship DS his winter kit. Now that they were out of the box they could no longer be ignored.

So we started using them. They are thin, scratchy, and poor at picking up spills. Think of something you'd find in a petrol station loo for drying your hands. But we have soldiered on using them. Today we finished the last roll and can go back to our lovely Bounty paper towels kitchen roll.

It's like one more sign that the pandemic is receeding. Smile

I will get my booster tomorrow, so DD and I will be off to the vacc. center, then to IKEA (she had an IKEA advent calendar and perhaps she was lucky) and to the garden center, for a list of pollinator friendly flowers.
Nothing went flying overnight and as soon as the storm started my migraine got better.

Champagneforeveryone · 17/02/2022 19:19

Joyful news indeed miss

HelenaJustina · 17/02/2022 19:41

Good news all round prok

I was 3hrs late leaving work due to contingency planning for the extreme weather event tomorrow. This has knocked back my plans for a food shop this evening definitely suitably mundane

IWanderedLonely · 17/02/2022 20:10

I collected my first ever Vinted purchase this afternoon from the newsagent(Hermes point) just round the corner from work.
It is a new, still in packaging, king size quilt cover. It cost me £4.95 and I'm very happy with it.

Lemonsandlemonade · 17/02/2022 21:21

Aww Sue hope it goes as well as it can.

Lovely story Miss!

No work tomorrow as we are shut due to the storm.

In truly mundane news I can’t get nappy sacks for love nor money. These are for work as all nappies must be double bagged ( it’s a care standard that we must follow). The biodegradable ones might bankrupt us.

Silkierabbit · 17/02/2022 21:27

After our Scottish breakfast DH decided he needed a nap as eating breakfast is hard work and he tried haggis for the first time. He says he will have it again tomorrow. Had hail then dh had a business meeting. It then stopped hailing, rain, winds, etc so I said to dh get in the car now this is the only 3 hours we will have were it wont be either strong wind, sleet, hail, snow or heavy rain so we went to Edinburgh. Lovely route through the Scottish borders, lots of hills, horses and sheep and pretty villages then went to Edinburgh and saw the castle.

Came back to hotel via the fish and chips takeaway. I wanted something healthy so had a jacket potato with haddock and coleslaw, dh said the lady gave him a strange look and he explained his wife was English. The boys had fish and chips, all lovely. Then went swimming in hotel pool, could only do 25 lengths as only 3.5 weeks since 2nd surgery and I had to invent two new strokes, chicken backstroke and 1 armed backstroke. I can still swim faster than dh with chicken backstroke which involves normal legs and flapping arms.

An air hostess must be a fun job for your DD Makiwa though must be hard with covid. I think there have been a lot of pay cuts and job losses in that sector here though hope it comes back.

We got snow coming back and heavy snow predicted tomorrow when move to Edinburgh hotel, have another Scottish breakfast then zoo then swimming tomorrow.

Yes shoes its a challenge to get them to eat more though as long as ds gets enough vitamins and nutrients I dont worry too much but always exciting why he tries something new, it only happens around once a year and often at buffets.

Silkierabbit · 17/02/2022 21:28

Lovely pictures Silkie - I hope you have a fab time.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/02/2022 21:43

Silkie You can only do 25 length with an OP handicap! ShockGrin I am amazed or "von den Socken" as my late DF used to say.

I ordered two recomended revision books for DS - he needs to seriously revise for maths and biology (bc. sloppy terminology and exam technique), English and geography he can do without.

Silkierabbit · 17/02/2022 23:19

Thanks Lemon and Prok. I love the term von den Socken. I am probably being unrealistic. It was lovely to go swimming but much harder to swim than before though guess its only 3.5 weeks post second operation, arm was not too bad though one bcn said no front crawl which I normally do mainly but felt really tight on chest and did not want to pull it. Its normally my best sport and normally go in fast lane though I could still beat DH. He was happy I was at lot slower than normal and very proud of the 1 length he beat me on. Grin

Just had 2 hot chocolates. Dh wanted us to go to bar but was closed. I was fine with that as I am tired now.

Silkierabbit · 17/02/2022 23:21

I managed to get a laugh out of ds. He was not keen on coming swimming and I said are you worried your parents will embarass you look Papa is in polar bear swimming trunks and wearing boots and a dressing gown. He nodded and giggled. Ds is fast asleep.

mathanxiety · 18/02/2022 03:40

This morning dawned cold and blustery but with no sign of precipitation anywhere, so we all thought we had dodged a bullet. However, just before two the snow began, and it kept going until eight. This time it's the wet snow that takes a while to clear off the car. I was in and out all afternoon (my afternoon off Smile) giving lifts to the DDs.

Silkies - I definitely see some blue sky in your Edinburgh photos. Hope you're having fun.

Sue - hats off to you, thinking of the needs of others at this sad time.
