Jimmy Carr Holocaust ‘joke’

Just seen this on Twitter.
'”No one ever wants to talk about the thousands of Gypsies killed by the Nazis, because no one wants to talk about the positives”
twitter.com/jrc1921/status/1489586961656516608?s=21
That would be the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Romany and Gypsies in death camps, maybe up to 1.5 million. Fucking hilarious.

I'm positive that a famed 'offensive' comedian will be heartbroken that some people found him offensive.

People have been 'cancelled' for less. Why does saying 'oh well
It's SUPPOSED to be offensive' make it ok?

Basically you can get away with anything as long as you say oh well it was a joke/meant to be offensive? So next time someone uses a racist slur, it's ok if they clarify it by saying it's just a joke? I'm sure the EDL will love that little loophole.

It's also bullshit, and there's no place for this kind of 'humour' anymore.

Cakemonger · 07/02/2022 11:47

Apparently now Carr has complained that comedy is dying. I think you’ll find it’s racist bullying that’s going out of style mate.

starhamster · 07/02/2022 12:01

Dunno what it is about him that has so many other celebs vouching for him, is it because he's so well connected they don't want to piss him off? He's always seemed so average at comedy and aimed for cheap laughs, he loves a fat joke for instance doesn't he.

I listen to a podcast called griefcast and when he was a guest he was awful at talking over the female host, drove me mad and just proved to me that he's another white male absolutely puffed up with self importance.

And what makes you able to decide there's no place for this kind of comedy anymore? How come you get to decide for everyone?
KurtWilde · 07/02/2022 12:59

And what makes you able to decide there's no place for this kind of comedy anymore? How come you get to decide for everyone?

Clearly I don't, because it's obviously not up to me. It's called an OPINION.

You sound quite offended by it..

wanttomarryamillionaire · 07/02/2022 13:02

@KurtWilde your right im offended by people who announce that just because they don't agree with or like something then it should be stopped/cancelled. I don't think anything should be off limits in comedy shows. Also i am a grown adult and if I don't like something someone says then i can choose not to watch/listen to it, but I don't get to decide for everyone else!!!

Gingernaut · 07/02/2022 13:07

@PurpleParrotfish

For those who have watched this stuff are there any lines drawn at all? For example would the audience be invited to laugh at lynching of black people in the US South?
None.

Domestic violence, paedophilia and rape are all featured.

He's done jokes like this since forever.

How is this one line gaining so much attention?

Gingernaut · 07/02/2022 13:10

@Cakemonger

Apparently now Carr has complained that comedy is dying. I think you’ll find it’s racist bullying that’s going out of style mate.
Carr doesn't do racist bullying irl.

Remember, this is his stage act and this isn't how he goes home to the wife and family.

Each line is effectively 'designed' defy audience expectations.

OhWhyNot · 07/02/2022 13:25

One line is gaining so much attention because it’s hitting on an unsaid truth about how we ignore prejudice against Roma and travellers

Many people have very negative opinions that they will openly air about traveller and Roma communities

Of course I am not saying they support what the Nazi’s did but there is openly prejudice views again them. That isn’t acceptable or is challenged with other groups (though often denied)

Wizzbangfizz · 07/02/2022 13:42

I think he and his comment are disgusting, but I can't stand him and never have been able too.

KurtWilde · 07/02/2022 13:44

Irony.

Latara · 07/02/2022 13:51

My auntie's brothers who happen to be Gypsies would beat the living shit out of Carr for that 'joke' if they saw him down the pub.
They wouldn't get that it's meant to be offensive blah blah.

And your average racist would hear the joke and just think, yes i agree with what he's saying, that means im allowed to say it too.

Thoosa · 07/02/2022 13:55

Carr doesn't do racist bullying irl.

Oh well THAT is all alright then. 🙄

Remember, this is his stage act and this isn't how he goes home to the wife and family.

I cannot believe what I’m reading. It’s like the Pseuds chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

Are you seriously arguing that racism is fine when it’s performative?

Thoosa · 07/02/2022 13:59

All said @ancientgran

Latara · 07/02/2022 14:03

Can we cancel Jimmy Carr like we've cancelled Jim Davidson?? Because right now I don't see the difference.

OhWhyNot · 07/02/2022 14:22

Jokes are made about many difficult issues

Some comedians are openly racist they know their audience are openly racist too and will tell jokes to support their opinions that they do not shy away from

Is mimicking racist, is telling a joke racist, sexist, homophobic it can be but it’s not always

Thoosa · 07/02/2022 14:47

If the “joke” has been about a different racial group, including my own, this thread wouldn’t be standing.

KurtWilde · 07/02/2022 14:51

@Thoosa

Exactly.
redpickle · 07/02/2022 15:17

I guess his thinking is, If I can't be funny (he isn't) then I will be controversial.
No idea why he's on TV so much, what's to like? He must have dirt on someone making the decisions.

Stevenage689 · 07/02/2022 18:04

Yes. Which was the point of his joke!

Carr is fully aware that travellers are an easy target and many people vilify them. So he wrote a joke that makes fun of these people. Y'know - the racist ones. The one's who say "I'm not racist but travellers do deserve to be looked down on."

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2022 18:18

So he wrote a joke that makes fun of these people. Y'know - the racist ones. The one's who say "I'm not racist but travellers do deserve to be looked down on."

So... his audience who laughed at the 'joke', do they know they're actually his stooges, intended to be the butt of his allegedly clever humour, to be laughed at in turn by more enlightened people?Hmm

There's no good way of spinning what he does.

BlusteryLake · 07/02/2022 18:24

I do wish some posters would stop pretending Carr's "joke" was a clever jibe at racist people that only very clever folk will get. It was a low-rent pop at travellers.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 07/02/2022 18:30

He's a twat. I once had the misfortune to see him live (someone else's 'treat'). He just wasn't funny. He reminded me of a 10 year old trying to shock his grubby mates.

But.. the fuss about this is so out of proportion. He told a shit, offensive joke to an audience who were presumably there to hear to shit, offensive jokes.

I'd prefer to see all this politician and public outrage about this directed at - say - tech companies that allow kids to see violent rape on their phones.

OhWhyNot · 07/02/2022 18:54

Then where do we draw the line if the joke is the punchline

Chris Rocks blatant misogyny in his act

Joan Rivers making jokes about 9/11 (or just ban her recordings)

George Carlin’s discussing why rape is funny (again banning his recordings)

Sarah Silverman jokes about rape

Russell Peters most of his show mimicking accents and playing into stereotypes

Larry David’s mocking of everyone on Curb Your Enthusiasm which is very uncomfortable at times (as it’s meant to be)

But you seem to be offended by people who have a different opinion to you. If you don't like what people are saying on here you don't have to read it anymore than I have to listen to Carr (I don't by the way.)

Have you ever thought why you are offended by other people being offended? Do you think everyone has to view things the same way that you view them?
