Just seen this on Twitter.
'”No one ever wants to talk about the thousands of Gypsies killed by the Nazis, because no one wants to talk about the positives”
twitter.com/jrc1921/status/1489586961656516608?s=21
That would be the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Romany and Gypsies in death camps, maybe up to 1.5 million. Fucking hilarious.

always a difficult subject. my dad was a right racist so i grew up with it. But if we dont like a comedian and find their stuff offensive, then dont give them airtime.

Supersimkin2 · 04/02/2022 22:31

That’s how JC earns a living. You don’t have to contribute to his salary.

MyGlassKeepsLeaking · 04/02/2022 22:35

Jimmy Carr isn't funny, clever, or witty. He's crude, crass, and he's just a twat

Jackofallsorts · 04/02/2022 22:35

It's a joke. Humour is subjective. Offence is personal.

Whatinthelord · 04/02/2022 22:38

@Octomore

Jokes about horrific topics can be ok when they punch up imo. E.g. a rape joke where the rapist is the butt of the joke, or joke about the holocaust where the Nazis are the butt of the joke.

Jokes which punch down, aiming at the victims of the terrible thing rather than the perpetrators, are usually total shite. Unfunny, offensive, and unimaginative.

Yes this.

He’s gone for an easy target. Gypsy and travellers face awful discrimination still and I just don’t find it funny.

I was reading a bit about Jimmy Carr. He seems more interested in the art of writing and delivering the perfect joke. The actual content seems less interesting to him.

Apparently he reels off hundreds of jokes at hundreds of warm up gigs and just keeps the ones where he gets a laugh. A particular type of joke drives the direction of the next one he writes etc etc.

So it seems like he found a pretty questionable following, kept them happy and got to this this point.

I think I'd have more time for him if he wasn't a tax dodging twat. So the 'I just say what people want to hear' excuse that he and his Incel-hero-peer group like to trot out doesn't really wash.

@WorstXmasEver

Why are people still getting offended by holocaust jokes? It was years ago.
Are you actually serious?

Sorry - at what point does the death of millions go from being horrific to humorous?

I'd really love to know. Biscuit

kittenkipper · 04/02/2022 23:01

I'll fight for his right to tell jokes about anything he wants. Freedom of speech is right I advocate for. Vehemently.

I don't find him funny. Not jokes about the holocaust. Not gypsy or Romani jokes. Nor his homophobic jokes. Or his rape jokes- all these are included in "career ending" section. What I find more depressing is that the comedy he deems fine, not career ending and above board- is 90% pure deep seated hatred of and mocking of women. That's not even risqué.

Coupled with his tax dodging I cannot understand his popularity.

badg3r · 04/02/2022 23:09

I can't stand Jimmy carr. His loud fake laugh on panel shows too is terrible. He comes across as so arrogant.

A joke is it? Go on then, explain in what way it's amusing to you?
VodselForDinner · 04/02/2022 23:27

I really hope Rachel Riley will stop working with him on Cats Does Countdown.

Holocaust jokes are not funny.

@StrychnineIntheSandwiches

Roma and Travellers are two of the easiest demographics to make a racist gag about, because they're groups that still face such a huge amount of hate in 2022.
Yes, which is one of the reasons it's particularly unfunny. He claims to be pushing the boundaries in some way, but he knows he wouldn't get away with making the same 'joke' about Jews or gay people. There's nothing bold or clever about it.
midsomermurderess · 04/02/2022 23:59

Him telling it was horrendous, that the audience laughed maybe even worse so. Not a gasp, a pause, just laughing. This poison is so very close to the surface.

I suppose his audience is a self selected sample of unpleasant and/or ignorant people. Who the heck chooses to go to his shows?
ancientgran · 05/02/2022 01:00
@ancientgran That whole thing sounds like a fucking nightmare! Did you also have non-white Brits in the mix too?
Not many, predominantly white area. Actually it sounds like it was all the East Europeans but I didn't mean it to sound like that, it was enough of them that it was raised.

Be nice if people could just accept each other.

Joystir59 · 05/02/2022 01:13

Jimmy Carr is totally unfunny and awful. That utterly ridiculous cringeworthy laugh he has. Can't stand the knob.

That's the exact point of the joke.

It's not the first time he's done this. There was a really vile joke about gypsies and moths. I'm not going to post it- I expect it's Googleable but frankly it'd be a waste of your time.
Angliski · 05/02/2022 03:50

He has always had disgustingly poor taste and isn’t funny at all.

3luckystars · 05/02/2022 05:04

I went to see him one night as part of a work Christmas party, I walked out. What he was saying was disgusting and not funny. I have no time for him.

VashtaNerada · 05/02/2022 05:29

I think it’s important to see the whole show before commenting. There is a very specific context to the joke (about the role of dark humour in dealing with horror) and I do think that makes a difference.

mallees · 05/02/2022 05:39

@ancientgran

That is so disgusting. I do think lots of groups get forgotten, homosexuals, the disabled, Jehovah's Witnesses plus lots of others including gypsies. I'm not sure but I assume Jews were the biggest group so people more aware of them.

Mind you not a big shock with Jimmy Carr.

More than 6 million Jews. Maybe you want to do some reading about the Subject?
coraka · 05/02/2022 06:04

It's a horrible thing to make a joke about, under any circumstances, and not remotely funny to me. However I wouldn't want to see anyone "cancelled". Just that people wouldn't laugh and the comedian would move on to a different type of humour.
